I certainly don't want to keep derailing the thread about Jackson's historic feat because he absolutely deserves the praise and recognition. However, since we have been talking about it here in this thread, I thought I would share what GW Coach Tony Dunford had to say on Facebook regarding Goode: "Today one of George Wythe’s greatest players ever, David Goode learned that his senior season will end prematurely due to a severe knee injury suffered just a few minutes into Tuesday’s game. When I heard the official news today, my heart broke into a million pieces for this kid, knowing how much this season meant to him. “DG” was leading our team in every category. Having played unselfishly in his role in past seasons to help GWHS see one of the best runs in SWVA history along with two state final appearances and securing a state championship title in 2025; David was well on his way to becoming GWHS’s All-Time Leading Scorer. Known to many as a “shooter”, David was consistently asked to guard the opponents best player during his career. David often led our Maroons in defensive statistics and likely has taken more charges than any player in GW history. As a freshman, David hit the winning free throws to send the Maroons to their first state final appearance since 2008. David played an integral part in helping the Maroons win the 2025 State Championship while earning 1st Team All State honors. David’s leadership was superb before his injury guiding the Maroons to a 9-1 start for the 2025-26 season. Knowing the years and hours this young man has put into his craft; to have his career end in such a manner breaks my heart. He deserved an opportunity to acheive the additional personal and team goals he had for his high school career. I am so proud of this young man. It’s been enjoyable watching him mature into an extraordinary leader for our program, school and community. As most know; David will be playing golf for Radford University after graduating. I request please for continued prayers for his health & recovery. Please reach out to him with your love, support and encouragement. I know he would be so grateful given this challenging time. I’ve been extremely blessed and honored to have coached #10"

I truly believe, If Owen concentrated solely on golf and played more than 12 times a year, he'd be an ACC/SEC caliber player like Jake Albert. But he's such a ridiculous athlete, he deserves to play basketball and baseball as much as he wants. This is why players will run through brick walls for Tony Dunford! I hate this so much for David. He's such an awesome kid.

Golf is such an accessible sport in this part of Virginia. It's far more expensive and thus, far less accessible in other parts of the state commonwealth. I've said for years, Emory & Henry could take only the top talent from SWVA and be a Top 25 D2 golf program in the country! It's a shame they couldn't see that and shuttered the program. I'm a golf nerd so, I'm going to elaborate. A couple of years ago, the NCAA implemented roster limits for all D1 golf programs. Now, D1 golf programs are only permitted to have 8 players on the roster. Any violation of this rule negates that school from using NIL for golf. That's some 1,800 fewer golfers playing at the D1 level. As a result, D2 has become a powerhouse. Kids overlooked or undervalued because they didn't play AJGA growing up are going to D2 programs rather than being extended walk-on opportunities at the D1 level. Therefore, D2 is akin to Class 2 in VHSL football. Deeper and much more of a gauntlet than any other division of the sport!

Golf has quietly been far and away our most successful sport, winning state championships in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020 and a runner up in 2022. Since 2015 we've also had 5 individual champions and 5 runner-ups....Twice we hit those in the same year. @Sixcat Adjacent's Maroon Tide has had similar success as well. You're sure to find 3 things in a 75 mile radius from here: Some very good golfers, some outstanding bass fishermen, and one Jackson kid that can fill up a stat sheet. But not me, though. I can't do any of those three things lol

  8. I'll never forget my senior year: my grandfather and I made a recruiting trip to Hampden-Sydney one Saturday morning in October after a Friday night game. We stopped in Roanoke to grab breakfast on the way, and the Roanoke Times that morning reported that Richlands and Salem were on a collision course once again and alluded to the '92 game. Six weeks later, a muddy field once again was the scene in a Division 4 State Semifinal game. The media hoopla leading up to that game was, at the very least, interesting, despite the fact that the seniors on both teams were in Kindergarten in 1992.

  9. It is good to see Battle winning games. I think they play hard for their coach and they don't show boat or complain when things aren't going their way. I would like to see Union's coaching staff enforce consequences for the behavior of their players. Leading the district in technical fouls should be embarrassing for the school.

  10. I had graduated by then, but made the drive to watch. 33 years ago. 1. Richlands was better. Do not listen to people tell you about math equations about how "this length and that diameter of cleats equals 20 or 30 or 50 percent more advantage.....bs, bs, bs. Salem could NOT block the Richlands front 4. 2. Dennis V is arguably one of the greatest ON FIELD coaches in this coverage area's history in my opinion. He was a magician. Off the field? Yep, had issues. On the field, xs and os, scheme for his time, technique, etc? A magician. 3. It's not 100 percent for certain that Vaught 100 percent knew the cleats were illegal. I think he likely did, but many have stated he didnt know until after he had already purchased them. 4. Technically, Richlands was NOT reprimanded and placed on probation for the following season due to illegal cleats. Its was actually due to crowd behavior towards Orange County in the State Title game that followed the week after they beat Salem. 5. There have been probably better teams in the coverage area for its time than Richlands 1992, but NONE more physical for its time. Thats the most physical football team I've seen in SWVA history (For Its Time). Again, NOT the Best for its time, but physicality, it cant be topped. Brutal lineplay on both sides of the ball. 6. I like Salem. Still do. But, Salem wasn't simply going to lose and there NOT be some kind of "argument or mistake or excuse" as to why. Salem did the same thing years earlier down at Lee High. Granted, Salem had a legit complaint with Richlands due to the cleats, but for people that played and know and watch football, you knew Richlands was better and the cleats didn't matter. 7. The excuse (Long Before) the cleats issue was proven true started the very next day out of the Roanoke Valley with "alleged proof" that the Richlands fire department "watered the field down" the night before the game. That fake excuse was already in full effect within 8 hours of Salem losing. The truth was opposite. Richlands actually had giant fans and helicopters and things of that nature actually trring to dry the field. What's incredible? Richlands state title then was Division 4. Virginia had A, Divisions 1 and 2, had AA Divisions 3 and 4, had AAA Divisions 5 and 6. So, basically the same as today. 6 classifications of football and Richlands over Salem then was the equal of a Class 4 title today, not even Class 3 which is where Heritage, LCA play, but Class 4. That's impressive.
