  3. I’ve been around for 20+ years. I started swva sports.com back when I started swvaol.com which was a dial up internet device. Roughly in 2001 or so. At that time gman had the old swvafootball message board going. My idea was to bring it all under one roof at swvasports so we could have one place to visit and talk about everything year round and not 15 different pages that were dedicated to each sport. Gman liked the idea and this place was born. At some point years later I got busy with kids, life, family etc etc. and kinda faded in to the background. Gman has kept it rolling along but he’s ready for a break. Instead of closing doors here I told him I’d just come out of semi retirement and keep it rolling. So here we are. Getting ready to move it to a new server, clean up a few things, and on down the road we go. Together. gman will still be around I’m sure. not much should really change. I’ll try to do a few things to make it better. anyway … it’s all good. Enjoy.

    Sarge Reed passes

To me a legend in the area. Sarge was a long time assistant for Harry Fry at Gate City. In the late 70s he took over as the lead Dawg at Appalachia stepping down in 79 after a 7-3 campaign handing the keys to Tom Turner to take over. Sarge then took over the Rye Cove program in 83 and got the broke on the brink of a state title in 88. RC had defeated Jonesville at Jonesville near the end of the regular season before losing to the Dogs in a mud bowl in the region finals during the improbable run for the crew from Jonesville. Sarge stepped out of coaching after 1990 but returned to the Cove in 97. He was to be he HC but took the assistant title instead so a former player, Joe Carter could be the HC. Sarge still ran almost everything for the program for the next three years which were some of the programs winningest teams. He took over the Twin Springs program in 2003 as they were coming out of a really rough stretch. I asked him why he was heading up there. Coach told me he liked a challenge and had coached at GC and RC, he might as well mark off the last county school before he retired for good. Coach stepped down after only two seasons. He led TS to two of their programs three region final games during those two years. Coach Reed wasnt flashy. He wore the same clothes to practice everyday and its hard to tell how many miles had been put on his 80s Thunderbird. He expected you to be physical as he said he only felt like he had lost two ballgames when his teams were the most physical one on the field. The playbook wasn't super deep on either side of the ball but like the nickname "Sarge" practice was drilled like military over and over to run things to perfection. He commanded respect but showed his "bigguns" a lot of love over the years. RIP to a SWVA coaching legend in my book.

  6. Big shout out of appreciation. You've given this old high school football junkie another great season. To the hand full of you I actually know, and the hundreds of you I've got to watch this year, Thank you. Although this probably wasn't the championship season you had hoped for, these will still be remembered as some of the best times of your life. Your dedication and hard work is truly admired. Play with Pride tonight, and give it all you got, 1 more time.

  7. Folks, I have the pleasure of being around a few athletics programs due to my profession and I see an alarming trend going on locally in the aspect of discipline. Programs that used to have depth and stability no longer have that and are grasping at straws in regard to talent. If you hold some of these young men accountable, they will leave the program and never return. Sometimes that will snowball to other players leaving, "Come on man, we don't have to put up with this." With the lack of numbers, I see coaches afraid to be tough to make players better men because they are scared that their numbers will dwindle or at worst their parents will go and cry to an administrator who will back the parent regardless of the situation just to please. It's not what it used to be and let's not be too fast to blame the kids because a lot of this starts at home. Just my observation...

  18. I've stated my take on this before. I used to be a "stick it out" hardliner; however, after going through my eldest's high school years/experience, I've change my views substantially. There is a fine line here, though. Parents need to understand that there are absolutely coaches/staffs, etc. that are going to be influenced by nepotism, status and favors in determining playing time and positional choices. There are "hook-ups" and good-ole boy clubs, more so here than any other place I've been. Not all of them and not even most of them, but damn sure some of them. Look no further than Union.....the kid couldn't start at QB at a traditionally run-heavy offense at a 2A school but transfers to a 5A school that has modern passing concepts. Hmmmm.......that's a great move for the kid. Parents must have a realistic assessment of their child's talent. This is where we lose most of the parents. They think their child is D-1 material but have never seen a true D-1 athlete up close. Parents need to understand the impact of their child's positional choice and evaluate if their physical characteristics are capable of that position choice. If your kid is 6'3", 210 and runs a 4.8 40, he isn't a next level WR, he is a TE waiting to happen. Another issue is sometimes your local high school's offensive/defensive philosophy won't allow your child opportunities to shine. This is a valid concern. The talented QB or WR that languishes in a Wing-T offense is hurting their ability to make an impact. I absolutely would relocate my kid if that was the situation. Another thing is sometimes kids want to transfer to a program that is more committed to improving and winning and player development. The good and competitive kids want to win and be in a winning environment. Can't blame them. Now, there are definitely reasons NOT to transfer and not being able to take criticism or compete for starting position are a few of them. This seems to be what most of the board members assumes are the issues in most cases. I don't disagree; however, there are damn sure valid reasons for kids to relocate. There are a lot of talented kids that should have had their college degree paid for or, at least, greatly subsidized through football but stayed in detrimental situations. "But, what about the team?" Good question, so let's ask some of the coaches that. Coach, what about the team? Why did you not start the more talented kid? Most of the time there are good answers; however, sometimes there aren't. So, if you would leave your current job for a better opportunity or more money, can you blame a kid for basically doing the same?

    Rye Cove young man

Got word from his mom this morning. Broken rib. Lots of precautions were taken. He wanted to keep playing but when he left I was hoping it was just a bad stinger. Really wasn’t expecting a rib injury at all.

  22. Grim news this morning seeing that prolific kicking coach Doug Blevins has passed. Heard they found cancer on him too late. He is the second coaching legend with local ties to pass this week. Tony Colobro passed earlier this week as well. Coach Colobro had his hand on a number of programs, both high school and collegiate and was a tremendous man. RIP to these two great men.

  23. Kudos to the Va High kids for not backing down. Listening to these announcers try to validate what JM is doing is sickening. They, and the VHSL, should be ashamed of themselves for doing what they're doing. That wasn't a true 2A championship game that was just played.

  28. WHO IS THE SECOND BEST TEAM IN 2A? FACTORS CONSIDERED *** --Marion scored 22 points on Va High, while Graham scored only 20 --Marion scored 40 points against Lebanon in game shortened for weather at 4:20 in the 3Q. A proportional calculation results in Marion scoring 60 points on the Pioneers over 4 quarters, while Graham scored only 59. --Radford defeats both Graham and Riverheads CONCLUSIONS: Marion>Graham Radford>Graham Radford>Riverheads Therefore, Radford and Marion>Graham and Riverheads SECOND BEST TEAM IN 2A: Marion Scarlet Hurricanes ***Any other factors that contradict this assertion, I have personally deemed irrelevant or inconsequential including head-to-head, outcomes of common opponents, W-L records, margin of victory, strength of schedule, computer rankings, and common sense.

I think we can now put to bed all that talk about how much better Union and Graham are than Radford and Glenvar because from what Ive seen, those 2 schools would finish 4th and 5th respectively in the Three Rivers District.

Despite criticism, under Harris, Tazewell has really developed a culture of hard working kids. I don’t know them personally, but they seem like good kids and community support has grown steadily. Regardless of the outcome on Saturday, they deserve applause.

Or maybe…just maybe…he figured out that (1) he could draw full VRS while (2) teaching gut HS classes and coaching football while (3) living 20 minutes from the ocean and (4) being within 30 minutes of several world-renowned golf courses. You show me a soul alive that wouldn’t make that trade in a heartbeat, and I’ll show you a liar. Mance wasn’t scared of Palmer. If he were scared of challenges, he wouldn’t have gone to Loris, which was a doormat before him and now is competitive.
