I never said VA football is better. The point margins in VA are similar to WV and actually there are more blowouts in VA proportionally than WV. For every Montcalm in WV there are 4 Rye Cove's in VA. The middle of the road teams in VA are just like the middle of the road teams in WV. There are just more middle of the road teams in VA because there are more schools. So there are on average 4 AA schools in VA on the same level as the top team in WV simply because there are 4 to 5 times more of them etc. At the very top on most years VA is better because the biggest VA schools have 2,000 to 3,000 students. No schools in WV have that many. Until recently I would even say that SWVA football was worse than WV because of districts. The very best teams in SWVA were guaranteed cup cakes each and every year. For every game with Powell Valley or even Burton that Applalachia had there was one with Rye Cove, Twin Springs and St. Paul. That was never the case in WV until recently when there just aren't enough good teams for other good teams to play. For the record Bluefield has called Giles, Christiansburg, Blacksburg, George Wythe, Abingdon for games ever since Bluefield dropped to AA. Only recently has Giles agreed to scrimmage. Perhaps they are on the path to agreeing to regular season games. Christiansburg agrees to scrimmage but not to play regular season. Blacksburg actually agreed to play 2 years ago but Thad Wells scratched that idea before the paperwork was done.

Graham pays 50k, Bluefield 38k, Bluefield College 60k. Bluefield gets a discount due to taxes paid by Bluefield citizens to the city of Bluefield. If VA High gets to use the stadium for 1k then that is one hell of a deal.

Another rant from you against Bluefield. Of course what you say is true but it is comparing apples to oranges. Virginia has a population of 8 million people. West Virginia has a population of 1.8 million. That roughly means that for every high school in WV there are 4 in Virginia. Fairfax County alone has 27 AAA size schools and over 1 million people and that doesn't include the cities of Fairfax, Alexandria and Falls Church nor the county of Arlington. Bluefield year in and year is better than any school in SW Virginia. Last year, no. This year and most years, yes.

Central Woodstock is undefeated. One of the traditional doormats of the Shenandoah Valley. But in 2000 they hired Greg Hatfield (now at Eastern View) and the program has steadily been climbing. After an 0-10 season in 1999 the all time winning % was .353. Since then . 507 and that includes two 1-9 seasons when the current coach, Mike Yew, took over. I like to see traditional poor schools turn things around.

The Big Reds is another name for Indians. No real connection to Big Blacks.

Shoemaker Shoemaker counts as Gate City.

1952 Gate City was 0-10. Three wins that were forfeited. So on the field it is the first 0-7 start.

No one really knows for sure but the most credible story is that they had an early game where they were covered in mud and the name big blacks was used and it stuck. I know it is hard to believe but in the early 20's most schools did not have mascots. By the end of the 20's they all did. Often it was related to the uniform colors that they were wearing when a sportswriter would comment on the Green Wave or Blue Tornado. In West Virginia Hinton / Summers County is the Bobcats because they had a coach in the mid 20's that went to WV Wesleyan and got the college to donate orange and black uniforms donated with Bobcats written on them.

Actually the 9-0-1 teams did win their district as co champion or didn't play the district champion because there was not a round robin. They lost out on power points to the co champion which was the team most of them tied.

"Good" and "Sorry" teams are not always defined by their regular season won-loss records. If there was a system in place that somehow made teams play equal schedules then record would be important. But as it is where schools in the same class play widely different schedules so far as competition is concerned, I like the rating system as it is much better.

Make that three times. I forgot about the 1970 Patrick Henry Rebels of Glade Spring that finished 9-0-1 but did not go to the playoffs and John Handley of Winchester also 9-0-1 in 1970.

It happened a lot more than you think around the entire state. I have even found one 9-0-1 team that did not make the playoffs.
