Whether it's his son or not doesn't change anything.  In this situation they are coach-player, not coach-son or father-son.

It’s easy for us to say coach/player situation not father/son looking as someone not part of the dynamic. If  you’ve coached your own kid at the high school level and always maintained coach/player mindset in every circumstance , then kudos to you but I’d say that’s harder said than done. All the coaches I know that have coached their own kids expect more from their kid and are harder on them. I’m not saying it’s fair to the kid but it is what it is.

Hmm....if I were Union or Ridgeview, I'd be sniffing around for some athletes that are close to the district lines.  Don't let your rival's mistakes go unpunished.

Open up the Wise County transfer portal 😂. Seriously, it’s April. 7 on 7s two months away. They’re really doing a disservice to the kids.

I can't recall a single coach that wasn't a teacher back in my high school days. But it is becoming more and more common for coaches to either be in non-teaching positions within the school system or not employed by the school system at all.

Every coach in high school was a teacher in my day too. Teachers have a lot on them these days compared to back then and I’m betting unless they just love a sport dearly, most aren’t going to coach for the minuscule stipend, extra time involved, &  added stress.

I would say it’s hard to find a head coach that doesn’t teach

    1. If they don’t teach they can’t be in the hallways recruiting

    2. you better have a good paying job because the 5k-8k supplement isn’t gonna put food on anyone’s table

    3. Very few jobs let their employees off at 3 so they can get to practice and games

I know Palmer does it at Graham so their is an exception to every rule but I don’t know why you would want your head coach in the building

Tony Palmer actually did a brief stint at Graham High School, maybe as SPED teacher but went back to law enforcement. I agree, it helps when the head coach is in the building but I think one of Graham’s assistants works there though.

It's not a requirement, but nearly all coaches are teachers.

A good portion of those are PE or SpEd. I would say that few are teaching English, math, history, etc...

This funny because three of the coaches during my high school career taught English, math, & the other history. These days, I do see a lot of PE teachers that are coaches and I see many who aren’t even employed by school system around here anyway.

  6. I’d say Richlands will be ready. I don’t know about Graham as I don’t know where they are in the completion process. If Tazewell hasn’t started not sure how long it will take. Obviously quicker than Graham but Graham started weeks ago. Anyone know projected dates?

    I doubt it....

This season, a girl transferred from Daniel Boone to Knoxville Catholic at the start of the school year, played to the Christmas break with Catholic, and then transferred back to Boone and was eligible immediately and finished out the season at Boone.

That’s Tennessee, right? Maybe someone else can clarify the rules for Virginia about multiple transfers. I could be off base about sitting a year. That could be an old rule or something I completely fabricated in my mind. 🤣

Trivette going to Abingdon wasn't nearly as impactful as I thought it would be.  I think Richlands would have been pretty tough if she stayed.

I agree. They certainly would have made a good run. Their current coaching staff seemed to do a good job this season and the players seemed to like them from what I heard.

On the softball side, you seem to be discounting the Mountain 7 teams awfully early in the season

I’m not sure why? SWD has Lebanon who will be competitive but how competitive will Tazewell be without the Compton girl? Richlands might be pretty good but unless things have changed Marion & Graham shouldn’t be contenders and well, VA High isn’t even fielding a team.

Did the TCSB conduct their meeting this week, or is it next week?  Would like to have information on the RHS assistant football coaches.  Has anyone heard anything official?

I didn’t see any fall athletic appointments on the minutes for March 11th, probably next time fall may be appointed.

This is somewhat related to Tazewell Football and it's why I posted it here.  For the visiting fans who are in the know, over in Burkes Garden, there is an Amish settlement.  I have been to the Amish restaurant and store over there for their incredible buffet before.  I have gone even before watching a game at Tazewell.  Well, recently as some may know, a portion of the family members that were involved with that great Amish restaurant were killed in Wisconsin.  9 people died in a tragic Van accident as they took a Van from Burkes Garden and up to Wisconsin for some type of Amish Conference.  The only survivor was a 2 year old (I think he's two) toddler.  I have no idea what will happen with that little Amish Store-Restaurant over there, but that place was fantastic.  It's a real tragedy and this has made national news.  Prayers for the Amish community and family members in Burkes Garden and that little guy who survived and is now without parents and will have to deal with that for the rest of his life.  There is a Go Fund Me Page if you are interested.

There is also an account set up at First Sentinel. GoFundMe takes an absorbent amount of the donations for themselves. I don’t donate through them if there’s an alternative.

  12. From this side of the state, I’d give the nod to region C in C2 but I’d like to see someone from D make a run to state championship. I think Glenvar could run the table again. I know the coach & he thinks they are going to have a promising season. They did return a lot of talent.

  13. Not sure when the estimated completion date is for Graham but they’re sure moving a lot of dirt & looks like getting ready to install drainage soon. Hopefully, weather cooperates and things get done expediently so all three schools will have a place to practice once that begins in earnest.

I assume the reason for the voting being so skewed away from one district is solely due to the timing of the All region meeting. Historically, In 1d it has been on Semi finals night before the games have completed. if it is the same for 2D, that might shed some light as to why the votes do not favor the winning district.

Maybe that’s what happened, I’m not sure a lot thought the regional final would be a SWD showdown with VA High vs Graham.

Explain for us, we may agree!

It’s just baffling to me that the two teams in the regional final and both advancing to final four have one a piece on 1st team & one a piece on the 2nd team. VH & Graham had some younger players possibly deserving of some recognition. Nothing against the kid from Gate City, maybe he had stats much greater than others but his team didn’t even make it to regional final. Perhaps, he is most deserving but I figured it would be a player from VA High or Graham (Mozzell or Ray).  It’s just my opinion & probably means squat.

If you think soccer isn’t interesting then you haven’t attended a match. There is always something interesting going on during SWVA soccer, whether its on the field or in the stands.

I may need to go just to watch the fans. Who was it that played in the M7 when that brawl happened? Was that last year? I remember it being brought up on here. Ridgeview & Union maybe. I’m not sure but there was video, lol!

  17. Now that basketball is over , can we just fast forward to football? Not that the spring sports aren’t important just not as much fun as chewing the fat about football. Maybe baseball & softball get interesting but soccer? 😂😂😂😂

So here’s my question…what’s y’all’s best & worst football memory either as a player and/or spectator?

The seniors that are graduating this year from Bluefield had a very good Middle school team, doesn't always translate.  They beat Graham 56-0 as 8th graders

Very true…a lot of factors in play from middle until they reach juniors/seniors, not always transitive for sure.
