  1. In my opinion I feel like this is one of the best defenses Union has put on the field! The linebackers fly around and the secondary is quick and good in coverage, and the D- line does a heck of a job keeping blockers of the LBs, and they all fly to the ball! I feel like Union will get tons of pressure on Tazwell, and I am curious to see how they react, whether they abandon the pass or do they keep airing it out? I don't see Tazwell putting up big numbers running the ball against the Bears Defense!!

I look for it to be close early on, and the Bears pulling away late and heading to the Region D Championship!

    Bears - 34

    Bulldogs - 13

  2. From what I seen and heard Scammell destroyed the Tigers the first match up. Kid seems to really run the ball hard, and is a down hill runner.  He also had a great night against Norton in that win.

I'm just curious what happened when they played Central? I know Central is a 2A opponent, but I was shocked at the score of this game, although I thought Central would win, I didn't think it would have been a blow out like it was.

    Is Scammell a senior?

Gate City fans, who is the kid that lines up at WR and makes the take away catches?  He reminds me of Scotty Ball from Richlands.  Kid highpoints the ball perfectly and has glue-hands.  I watched him do it on Union, Abingdon, and now Central.  He really does remind me of a Scotty Ball clone at receiver.

Is it Eli Starnes? Heard he was a very physical WR with great hands, but I haven’t seen Gate City this year!!

  4. Central definitely will try and pound it out against Lee! But can Centrals defense stop Huff carrying the ball, kid is a load and runs hard! Pendergraft has been throwing it well, and can be a nightmare for some teams, with Church playing safety, he definitely will look to be a game changer in the passing game!!

I personally think Central would of had a better chance against Union if they would of threw the ball a little more, and not try a trick play on 4th and 12, that was blew up from the start!!

Any word on #61 bishop kid. Looked pretty bad hope he can come back.

Talked to him after the game Friday night, said he was really sore, and a little swelling. He said he didn't think it was really serious!! He said he was going for a MRI today!! Prayers for him and hoping it is nothing serious, and he will get healed up and ready to finish out the season against Abingdon and Battle.

Those PV guys would know, but I think his name was Barry Jones? He was a big, bald-headed guy with a red goatee.

Best Defensive Coordinator around this area! Played for him in 1999 and 2000! Great coach, had a great love for the game, and would fire you up better than anyone!!

One of the best defenses I remember was 1997-1998 Powell Valley Defense! With talent like Julius Jones at Safety, Don Dorton and Keith Davis at MLB, Jason Johnson at OLB, along with Matt McCoy at the other OLB, Josh Warren and Matt Coughlin at DE, and a nasty group of defensive tackles in Shea Chapman, Brian Chandler, Luke Gilly, Cory Davis, Calvin Davis! CB if I remember correctly were Josh Rogers and Michael Prewitt and this team won back to back state titles and had a shut down defense!!!

  7. If Union can control the clock, eliminate the turnovers I think this game can be close!  If Union gives up a couple of big plays early and gets behind, then it will be a long night for the Bears. They just don't have the quick score offense like they have had in the past.

I think the biggest concern for the Bears is in the secondary this week, not because the kids aren't good athletes, because of the youth of this team. Can they stay focused, and be disciplined to play their assignments??? If they can, and get some pressure on the QB, I can see this game being a great battle on the Ridge.....................and GOOD LORD, can we get some discipline on this team, and eliminate the stupid personal foul penalties that we seem to get 3 or 4 of each game. I've seen numerous personal foul penalties called on the same couple of kids this year, and nothing is said or done to them! If the can't control their attitude and actions on the field, WIN OR LOSE, pull them off the field and find them a nice little spot on the bench and let them sit for awhile. Let them think about it, and let them realize this game is about a team, and not one person, and to quit being selfish and hurting your team because you got your feelings hurt, or because you just got your @$$ beat on the last play!

  8. I don’t see anyone bashing #10, like I said I think he’s one of the most athletic kids in the Mountain 7! Does that mean he is the best option for QB?

I don’t think so, when James Mitchell played QB in the Wildcat when Turner got hurt that year, yes Mitchell was probably the most overall talented kid on the field at any game Union played, but that don’t mean you want him being your starting QB!

To whoever said, until Union shows a little passing game and shows teams they can complete a few and try to keep the defense honest, they will see 11 men in the box, with all 11 coming to stop the run with no worry at all about the passing game, is this #10 fault?? No definitely not, but at some point a few changes have to be made, or you will never make it past Round 1!

Id hate to see the Sykes kid leave, but as a 10th grader, that could start on most teams around here, I can understand the frustration, everybody says “oh he is young, and hasn’t had the experience at the varsity level”, are also the ones seeing 3 and 4 freshman starting as well, and I have no problem with freshman starting if they are 1 of the best 11 on the field!

  9. Sykes showed he could throw the ball well in the Elizabethton scrimmage, and the GW benefit game.  I am taking nothing away from the current QB, the kid is an athlete and can make plays, but not from the QB position. Put him in the backfield or at WR and get him some touches, and let him make some plays. I agree he would make a difference on the defensive side of the ball as well, not scared of contact.  Cochran not on the field blows my mind, the kid put in a ton of work from last season to this season, and from what I heard had a excellent summer at the 7 on 7 games, and I thought for sure he would be out there on the defensive side of the ball.  Satterfield not touching the ball more than 4 to 5 times a game is just insane, Satterfield has blocked for every running back that he has played with and got his few carries here and there, and seems to always be getting tough yards, and running hard nosed, and BAM he no longer gets more than 4 to 5 carries a game.........

Not sure why Union took Zach Hall from center, he has been a starter at center his whole high school career if I am not mistaken, and Izaak Keith is stout at the MLB position, and had played on the line for a couple of years, and now he's not even playing offense. I understand that you want to keep as many kids from going both ways as much as possible,  but when the job is not getting done, it's time to suck it up, and put your best 11 out there, whether you have to have kids going both ways or not.  Sitting at 3-2, with Thomas Walker, Ridgeview, Abingdon, Central and John Battle left, you would think changes would be made, and the best 11 would be placed on the field, no matter whose mommy's or daddy's get their feelings hurt.

  10. Wow King William came in and handed it to Graham! Seems like they didn’t have any other game plan but to try and beat KW to the corner or throw it deep!! KW matched their speed, and their physicality and man KWs running back is a pure stud!!!

Great season by the Graham G-men, and congratulations to the King William Cavaliers!!

  11. Hats off to Lomax, for a heck of a game with over 400 yards and 6 TDs! That kid runs harder than any kid I’ve seen!!! I don’t think I have ever seen the kid fall backwards, always keeps his legs churning and hits the hole hard, and hats off to the O-line when they got settled in!!

Good Luck to the Bears next week as they head to Graham! Better come ready to play, can’t fall behind like that to a team like Graham and overcome it!! If you spot Graham points like they did VA High tonight, Graham will bury Union fast!!

  12. I am just curious what everyone's take is on Turner at Union. He has been the head ball coach since 2011, and has lead the Bears pretty well. This being his 10th year, and still no state championship, just wondering if anyone thinks its time to look somewhere else or if Turner coaches as long as he wants to for the Bears???
