  1. Football and girls’ basketball are the major sports at Pulaski County. The Cougars’ home football games at Joel Hicks Field have a lot of tradition behind them and always get large crowds and community support, while the girls’ basketball team has been consistently good for several years along with Carroll County.
  2. Glenvar 3 Radford 1 Glenvar wins the Region 2C title, setting up state matchups of Radford vs 2D champion Virginia High, and Glenvar vs 2D runner-up Graham
  3. Radford 6 Chatham 0 Glenvar 7 Patrick County 0
  4. Radford 4 Nelson County 0 Evan Rupe 2 goals Parker Prioleau 1 goal Brody Shull 1 goal
  5. Nelson County 4 Alleghany 0 Nelson County advances to play Radford in the region quarterfinals Eastern Montgomery 3 Fort Chiswell 0 Giles 10 Covington 0 The Mustangs will play the Spartans in the region semifinals. Of note, this marks the last time Alleghany and Covington play separately. Next year they become the Alleghany Highlands Cougars and compete at Class 3, staying in the Three Rivers District.
  6. No unbeaten teams, but the best record in 2C belongs to Glenvar at 14-1-1, scoring 87 goals and allowing 12. Radford is also a potential contender at 11-2-1, scoring 67 goals and allowing 13. Glenvar beat Radford once and tied 4-4 the other game. Nelson County has a good record but has played a weaker schedule than Radford and Glenvar.
  7. Some playoff matchups for Region 2C boys soccer via the district calendars: Alleghany @ Nelson County 5/24 James River @ Appomattox 5/26 Patrick County @ Martinsville 5/30 Dan River @ Chatham 5/30 Alleghany/Nelson winner @ Radford 5/30 James River/Appomattox winner @ Glenvar 5/30 Floyd County and Gretna did not field varsity teams this year, leaving a bracket of ten teams
  8. In the Three Rivers District, Radford and Glenvar are both very good this year with 7 shutout wins each. The two teams just tied 4-4 in their game tonight.
  9. Radford Bobcats Football 2023 Aug 11 - scrimmage at Blacksburg Aug 25 - George Wythe Sep 1 - Giles Sep 8 - at Virginia High Sep 15 - Galax Sep 22 - Alleghany Sep 29 - at Glenvar Oct 6 - James River Oct 13 - at Patrick County Oct 20 - Floyd County Oct 27 - at Carroll County Nov 3 - Open Aug 18 is likely an exhibition game at Pulaski County as the two teams have played the “Battle of the Bridge” before the first regular season game each year
  10. Also Pulaski County is moving down from Class 4 to 3 which will put two powerhouse girls basketball teams in Region 3D. Should be a good matchup for the regional title game between the Lady Cougars and Carroll County. No other team will likely come close to those two.
  11. One idea I think is worth considering is adding a third-place game to the tournament, statewide. This wouldn’t entirely fix the John Marshall issue, but it gives teams who have to deal with a powerhouse on their side of the state a chance to go to Richmond. Stagger state brackets one week apart so VCU hosts Classes 1, 2, and 3 Thursday-Saturday one week and 4, 5, and 6 the next week. The four teams that advance to the state semifinals get in. The two losing teams in the semifinals play each other for third place, followed by the winning teams playing for first place. Each class gets their own day - this would require a little more travel, but bring in double the fans. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams get a trophy. For example, an all-day Class 4 state tournament would have looked like: (Girls followed by Boys) Tuscarora vs King’s Fork doubleheader for 3rd/4th (Girls) Pulaski County vs Hampton for 1st/2nd (Boys) E.C. Glass vs Varina for 1st/2nd Class 3: (Girls) Meridian vs LCA for 3rd/4th (Boys) Skyline vs Cave Spring for 3rd/4th (Girls) Brentsville District vs Carroll County for 1st/2nd (Boys) Hopewell vs Northside for 1st/2nd Class 2: (Girls) Gate City vs John Marshall for 3rd/4th (Boys) Floyd County vs Brunswick for 3rd/4th (Girls) Clarke County vs Central for 1st/2nd (Boys) Radford vs John Marshall for 1st/2nd Class 1: (Girls) Buffalo Gap vs Burton for 3rd/4th (Boys) Auburn vs Altavista for 3rd/4th (Girls) Rappahannock County vs Eastside for 1st/2nd (Boys) George Wythe vs Lancaster for 1st/2nd
  12. “These private prep school teams Paul VI and Long Island Lutheran just need to work harder” - John Marshall, probably
  13. Radford and Virginia High in the semifinal for the right to play the John Marshall AAU team
  14. I’ve seen a lot of disparaging responses to Cormany’s interview circulating around from John Marshall alumni and supporters. They repeatedly say that “Radford just needs to work harder and coach better”. I know for a fact that the Radford players knew they would be facing JM if they got to state, and prepared for it the entire season, scheduling teams like E.C. Glass. I’ve also seen plenty of accusations that criticism of the way JM runs their program is racially motivated and this area doesn’t want to see inner-city schools or black players succeed. (For the record, Radford has seven black players and five white players on the varsity team this year. That’s a Bobcat team with a majority of black players coming to Richmond to face JM two years in a row.) At the end of the day, we see a stacked deck for what it is, even if the VHSL allows it. Other Class 2 schools don’t have the advantages of recruited players from North Carolina and New York, Adidas sponsorships, the coach of an AAU program, or the funding to travel and play against a nationally ranked schedule. Nor do any of those teams have a population the size of Richmond to draw players from. I have no problem with Radford playing a John Marshall team composed of players local to or nearby to the Highland Park neighborhood the school is zoned to. At this point, Radford (as well as Floyd, James River, and Virginia High) has a better chance of winning a Class 3 state championship competing with the likes of Hopewell, Skyline, Cave Spring and Northside, or even a Class 4 title than Class 2.
  15. I would call the consolidated school the Buchanan Elks or Golden Elk. The county has an actual elk herd on a restored coal site near Grundy and no VHSL school is using that mascot. Maybe purple for Twin Valley and gold for Grundy?
