Gate City plays quite a few underclassmen also. That being said, I can see Union blowing them out of the water after last years games but then again every time I've ever expected us to get whipped we seem to find a way to be in the game. Luckily I'm not  a betting man.

It was Travis Wells grandfather.  Travis Wells sure wasnt the quietest feller on the football field. 

There's a video on YouTube from back then when WCYB was covering it. I think the grandfather of one of the players said he was concerned over the threat. 

I'll take a 1 point win any day of the week. 
 

Defense is the key for the Devils! With the modern offenses of the day, you have to be able to get off the field at least a few times a game. I look for ball control out of the Devils, their running backs and QB can control most games, as long as the line holds up even half way decent. Gate City has never had a 5 man o-line that averaged 300lbs across the board and have proved you don't need it to be successful, you don't need maulers on the line just ballers doing their jobs! I think the Devils win but it will  be close!

First day in pads and it was against a 6A school that has already scrimmaged. I don't take much away from these first scrimmages but the line definitely needs work on both sides of the ball before the trip to Richlands. We'll see how things look against Virginia High next Thursday. Having said that, I think our only score came from a lineman with a fumble return towards the end of the scrimmage..lol. I heard we had a couple of starting linemen out also but like I said we'll hopefully see improvement next week.

I knew it couldn't have been us. The season hasn't started yet. 😂

I'm trying hard to like these gray uni's for this year. The helmets are great but not so sure about "The City". Then again as long as we win they can put "Tater Salad" on them for all I care.

Same for RC. The feeder system fell off around 06 or so and was in a serious tailspin.  New folks took over around 2015 or so.  It took a couple of years for them to get their feet under them which in turn led to better turn out.  Didnt hurt that we have 2-3  of the largest classes that have come through RC in a long time coming up then as well.  Numbers rose and the HS program started to see the benefit from it last year.  I expect RC to dress 40+ kids this year on varsity.  
Covid seems to have put a damper on the youth program currently and they are fighting to get more kids out now.  I hope they have a good turnout today for this years program.

Forest spread GC out and just let the QB run/pick his holes which gave GC problems. Forest was also pretty darn good upfront. GC was still better on the LOS. Just an incredibly close game. I was setting on the Forest (away) side and when the ball came off of the GC kickers foot, I thought. Game over. Forest has won this game. It was a flat knuckle ball kick. The only thing was.....the ball just stayed thr same trajectory and height until it went past the crossbar. I've never seen a kick in all of my life look that ugly, yet still be true from that kind of distance. For 10 yds or an extra point? Sure, it happens, but not that distance.

The GC Radio guys "guesstimated" 54 at Midnight Madness but it sure looked like there were several more than that to me. Then again i'm gettin older.

Bingo! I counted 60-70 on the 3 GC little league teams combined for this year and noticed several others were asking how to sign up. A couple of years ago we had 26 players on varsity and thankfully the interest and desire has seemed to have returned. 

Lebanon will be in 2D and the SWD for the next few years until they can send a few kids back to Castlewood and Honaker to drop again. 

Gate City is hosting Virginia High in the benefit game this year also.

I was hoping Ridgeview would scrimmage West Ridge the last couple of years.  I'd call it the copyright/trademark bowl.

I was a member of both of those boards back then and the old LPD board so I'm glad to see it's still in good hands. I appreciate the work you fellers have put into this over the years. I've been here this long so I might as well hang around..lol

Greeneville TN used to use that logo too. It's a great look with the white helmet, that's how Gate city should look.

I told one of their coaches yesterday it was good to see them switch back off of black.  Last years domes werent as bad as 2 seasons ago but white or blue is more fitting for them I believe.

Gate City updated their lids for this season.
