  1. That's pretty much spot on. Even the old salt didn't do this as well as Groh in big games in the past several years.
  2. The day count marking a lack of an NCAA team national title for Virginia Tech is over 38,000. Your point is?
  3. The decision's been made: Groh will return for 2009. The staff under him, however, may be subject to change. http://www.dailyprogress.com/cdp/news/local/article/sources_groh_to_return_as_coach/32286/ The chart on the top of the page says it all. I just don't want to wallow in mediocrity again. It drives a stake in my heart to see it. "For the second time in five days, VT has defeated UVA."
  4. I had no prior knowledge of Sean Avery, so it's beyond me. Still though, he's either got no regard for political correctness or he's got a legitimate problem. I haven't seen ESPN's work on him, so I'll go check that out.
  5. UVA is sitting on a motherlode of money. True, they're tight-fisted about using it, and the donors may crawl into a little pigeonhole when it comes to a new coach. However, I could perhaps actually see them forking over money to get a big-name in here. However, it's the issue: would they even come? More likely, I see us getting someone from a school like Dooley or Petersen. Charlie Strong's name has come up as well. I'm willing to give anyone with a semi-decent track record a fighting chance.
  6. GREAT point, Ron. And I agree: producing fine, upstanding men is a higher priority than winning a national title or playing in BCS games 3 out of every 4 years (like USC, LSU, etc.). I'd gladly trade never winning a national title and selling out to being the proto-typical "State U" if our program continues to produce fine, proven leaders. However, I have two glaring concerns right now. First, in the short term, there have been a fair number of young men who haven't upheld the standards that we as Virginia fans would like to see them uphold. We have players such as Chris Cook being charged with grand larceny, Brooks's desire to toke up without regard to his status on the team, Fitzgerald leaving due to Honor Code violations, Lalich's probation violations, and for a local example-Bradshaw's actions. Though I believe that the ultimate responsibility lies with the players and that Groh has almost without exception made the right move, I'd like to see a new coach recruit a slightly different style of player, if that makes any sense at all. Keeping the Coppers and the Longs and the Sintims and the Peermans, but not bringing in the bad eggs. Doing a better job of coaching the players who may lack a bit in athleticism, instead of only seeing results with the upper crust of guys. Second, I don't think it has to be mutually exclusive to have a team that occasionaly/regularly competes for ACC titles (and not Coastal titles) and maintain the level of respectability within the program. Grobe at Wake Forest is a fair model of how this plan can work (and a UVA Alum, imagine that). Though Groh generally crafts upstanding men, he fails in the second prong of fielding a fiercely competitive team. It's not the easiest task in the world, but it certainly can be done. And thanks for helping me to reminisce about some of the great times in UVA history. I needed that. :)
  7. Oh, I'm sure that Foster wouldn't come here. Greenbacks do a lot of talking, though. For all the flack UVA gives him, I don't care if he talks like someone out of the Waterboy and looks like Rocky Dennis, if he can coach this team and take this program to the next level, he'll have my support. About Pruett, that's a possibility, come to think of it. Pruett did wonders at Marshall. He's got a proven track record, if nothing else. Though, it's not my preference. We BADLY need a good offensive-minded coach at UVA, especially after Mike Groh set the program back 5 years. Not to mention, Pruett has an age issue that can't be overlooked.
  8. I will cry. I'm not joking. I will probably cry. It's been SO long.
  9. We all know how upset UVA is with the Groh tandem, and I just wanted to keep a watch here for developments in the situation. I'm like a kid in a candy store about this, I truly am. The whole prospect is exhilarating! Hour #1: 1. Rivals reports: "significant coaching changes" to occur at UVA. Largely unsubstantiated. 2. Two unconfirmed reports on http://www.thesabre.com stating that Al Groh/Mike Groh are fired. 3. Foster reported to be on the shortlist. Again, wild speculation. Hour #2: 1. A conflicting report, claiming that Groh has been retained. Fairly reliable source, all things considered. 2. Much calamity, people making joke posts.
  10. Let it be UVA. If Craig Littlepage had a sensible bone in his head, he's on the phone to Tuberville IMMEDIATELY. I'd go up to $4M/season. I truly would.
  11. This brings up all sorts of issues with sentencing these teachers. Obviously, those students are the victims. But with hormonally-maturing teenager, there's little chance a 13 to 17-year-old male will deny that, and may be all-too-eager to get it.
  12. LOL. "That's funny, I don't care who you are right there..."
  13. If UVA has any common sense, they'd point out Elton Brown, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Branden Albert, and Eugene Monroe. Those guys have made/will make a pretty penny for themselves. If Morgan can keep his grades up, he'd be the perfect cap on a fairly successful UVA recruiting class (by our deflated standards).
  14. LOL! This is really crude, but it's beyond hilarious. Pure freaking gold. Only from a hockey player, I tell you.
  15. This is typical UVA football. Make one incredibly gutsy move, then one brainless/inexplicable move. It's so typical, and it makes me sick. Early word is that Mike Groh is gone, unconfirmed of course. More may follow...
  16. Who/what? LOL, I'm so out of the loop on this.
  17. I may have misinterpreted where you were going, so I apologize if I did. I totally agree with this. He's going to hire only the best lawyers in order to try to get him out of this. However, I have a strange feeling that Plaxico's going to be paraded as an example. Especially with Mayor Bloomberg badgering the District Attornies to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law. If this case makes it to trial, Burress is crispy, burnt toast. 3.5 years will be GENEROUS if he has to come before his peers/judge. However, most cases never make it to trial, and you better believe the Burress defense counsel's going to be working feverishly to try to strike a plea deal. However, in order for Burress to duck jail time, he's going to have to be charged with a lesser offense, or perhaps the 1 of the 2 "failure to register/failure to license" combination. However, you'd have public perception weighing against this in two converging directions. One from the "gun laws are meaningless if you let him go" crowd, one from the "look, another athlete getting preferential treatment" crowd. Let's just say that the prosecution has MUCH leverage here, and with any amount of evidence, they're not backing down. It's a perfect storm converging against Burress, and if that gun's linked back to him through discovery (and it's a Glock, not exactly a "Joe Schmo" handgun), then his NFL career's over unless his attornies do some VERY fancy footwork.
  18. If you've read any of my posts on the College/Pro forum, you'd know that I'm a realist first and an optimist second. I congratulate Richlands on a season well-played, especially on winning the Region IV, Division 3 crown yet again. Those young men certainly deserve all that and more for accomplishing what they have this season, especially considering how they started. My responses were directed merely as a warning toward those who were claiming that "experience would prevail", in the face of the obvious talent advantage Brookville had. Regardless of the fact that Brookville too had nearly the same experience. Shades of Liberty-Bedford in 2002? But I digress. Fans should hope for a win when obviously overmatched, not going around predicting it with substantial evidence to the contrary. And I'm glad you had a nice knowledge of Brookville; I just wish that other fans did, as well. As such, you knew what Richlands was up against, and that it would take the best game of Richlands's season plus a BIG helping of luck for the Blue Tornado to prevail. But to make a snide remark out of context about who knows as much or more about Brookville is a bit trite, isn't it? Perhaps you do know more about them, but perhaps you don't. Quite a strong claim to make when we've never compared knowledge about Brookville, much less when we've never met. Hard to substantiate that one, sir, unless you possess some clairevoyancy of which I'm unaware. A poor claim weakens your entire argument by association.
  19. First, there is no Second Amendment dispute here, and it's hard to see where one would be brought up. Especially with the DC Handgun Ban case having been decided not 6 months ago. Plaxico obviously has the right to purchase a gun, but the Constitutionality of registration and licensing has been upheld numerous times. Moving on... Second, One thing they teach us is that no legal case is a slam dunk. But this one's certainly not the most complicated case you'll ever see. It's not even that complicated at all; let's just say that I won't be seeing this on my Criminal Law exam. Even if the handgun isn't registered, tracing the serial number of the handgun will reveal the shop from which it was purchased. This paper trail will lead to the purchaser, who had to undergo background checks pursuant to New York's stringent handgun laws. This paper trail will also likely reveal credit card information, were it used to purchase the weapon. If this purchaser is "Plaxico Burress" or someone closely related to him, it makes the prosecution's case that much easier. Even if not, Plaxico's not registered to carry a handgun (already proven), and he had the gun on his person (obviously) when he shot himself. I don't have access to the New York statute (just haven't looked it up), but Plaxico's well on his way to satisfying the mental and non-mental elements of this offense. And it carries a MINIMUM sentence of 3.5 years.
  20. I hope you're not talking about Mary Kay LaTourneau, because it looked like her face had worn out 7 bodies. And she'll regain her shape about a pregnancy. I don't see anyone complaining about Reese Witherspoon, etc. ;)
  21. Not only that, Plaxico's handgun was neither licensed nor registered. "All aboard, next stop: PRISON. Estimated time of arrival: 3.5 years."
