  1. Earlier this month we had a family emergency which required me to rent a car and drive a considerable distance on short notice. Given the circumstances I was pretty agitated, I was in a hurry, and I probably drove a lot more aggressively than I normally would. Once I reached the destination and resolved the issue, it never occurred to me to even check the license plate until the next day when I had to return the car. Sure enough....Ohio tags. So I guess I need to own my own part of the lore associated with that particular state.
  2. Didn't post last night, but just in case anyone cares: Amherst 34, Liberty (Bedford) 0 After jumping out to a 3-0 start, the Minutemen may be hard pressed to win another game until the season finale against Jefferson Forest. My son didn't dress out because he's been fighting a sinus infection this week (not Covid -- we have proof). Which is a shame, because he would have seen a lot of playing time on the kickoff return team.
  3. Liberty(Bedford) 28, Staunton River 0
  4. Liberty(Bedford) 42, Fort Defiance 0 Nice win for the Minutemen. Got to clear the bench in the 4th quarter (my son made his first varsity tackle tonight playing linebacker). Marching band made their debut with their full show and sounded great (my youngest boy made his debut on the field there tonight). First time LHS has shut anyone out in a long time. This plus Hokies win and a victory by my grad school (Charlotte) over Duke. Pretty nice football night for me all around.
  5. All of the information in this thread is very interesting and somewhat useful. Unless you're Liberty Christian Academy. Then you can pretty much make up any number you want and nobody will challenge it.
  6. Pretty sure that John (his brother) is a poster here. Very sad indeed. He was a classmate at RHS (finished a year ahead of me). One of the funniest human beings I've ever encountered and just a great guy all around.
  7. I've lost faith in more human institutions over the past year and a half than I can recall. But the performance of the media (painting with a broad brush there) has been particularly dismal. The phenomenon of social media certainly has a key role in the rampant confusion attached to this pandemic, but "journalistic integrity" seems to be a term of pure nostalgia at this point. I also never thought I'd see the day (in this country at least) where fear and ignorance are actually guiding principles for public policy. The truth in all matters will reveal itself, but that will probably take a long time. And it's hard to imagine that those who write history in the future will view our contemporary society in very charitable terms.
  8. My understanding all along has been that the vaccines do not prevent anyone from contracting Covid -- but that the intent was to mitigate the most severe consequences (like death) associated with the disease. And the data so far suggest that they are all pretty darned effective when measured against that type of standard. So am I the only one who is a little bit perplexed by all of the "[insert name] was vaccinated but got Covid anyway" anecdotes?
  9. Liberty(Bedford) 33, William Byrd 28 Happy to see my son's team win in his first varsity outing. Liberty's lack of numbers is likely to be a problem in the long run (lot of guys playing both ways almost bit them last night). Byrd is small and quick on offense -- Hairston kid at QB is very hard to contain and can throw the ball well. Otherwise hard to say what the future holds for either team, but it was great to be back under the Friday night lights.
  10. Impressed by what little I got to see of them at the jamboree in Bedford this past Friday. Very impressive team on the field and apparently a class operation off of it.
  11. It appears likely that Liberty(Bedford) will not field a JV team this season. Numbers -- including 9th through 12th graders -- hovering around low 30s.
  12. I truly feel sorry for whomever has (hypothetically) been assigned to track me. That's got to be a really boring job.
  13. Volunteers -- when we can get them. Apparently our local Rec Department did it until our athletic director ticked them off a couple of years go.
  14. I like it when my neighbors all gripe about the costs of materials and wonder why they have to pay all kinds of fees and charges for school related programs. I want to say, "It's because you're clearly signalling to the 'conservatives' that you elected to public office that you'd prefer to pay more out of your own pocket than you ordinarily would in taxes -- and you're also willing to put up with substandard school resources as a direct result." But I don't. Because I'm nice like that.
  15. Not germane to the coverage area, but Liberty-Bedford's numbers are down. Freshmen through seniors reported for first day of practice today and I counted about 35 players total.
  16. My local PTSA is advertising the Commonwealth's sales tax holiday as a great time to purchase school supplies. Want to guess one of the primary funding sources is for k-12 education in Virginia? Yep. That's right. Sales tax. Am I the only one who questions the logic here (even just the smallest of smidgens)?
  17. Very true about Myrtle and its attractions. We enjoy the proximity to Wilmington and Southport as well. As part of our annual trip this time around we intend to speak with a realtor about the possibility of finding a place of our own within the next few years. Honestly I was hesitant to even mention Holden Beach and draw attention to it. IMO a big part of its charm the fact that it hasn't been "overdeveloped" the way some other areas have been. But since there isn't an abundance of open land available for building, I figure I'm in the clear there.
  18. We're pretty partial to Holden Beach. Been going there regularly for the last 10 years. Currently counting the days until our next weeklong stay, and we are very seriously considering investing in property there for the long haul.
  19. I spent the first five years of my life as a resident of Doran Bottom (corner of Kirby Road and what is now Mill Ave). I might have some influence with current owner. I mean, it's not waterfront. But still within reasonable walking distance if you cut through the old horse pasture.
  20. Not saying that Bluefield researcher's source is wrong (I mean, stranger things have certainly happened). But it would take some pretty complicated maneuvering on Mance's part to return to Virginia under any circumstances. But I firmly believe two things. First is that Tarter is an outstanding choice. Other is that his tenure will probably be relatively brief. Very similar to dynamic within the program in the early/mid 1990's. But hopefully a better outcome in the long run.
  21. This guy? ----> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Clark_(footballer) If so, that could be interesting. Kind of a whole reverse "Ted Lasso" kind of thing.
  22. That's really more of a Wednesday kind of thing in my place of work. But I digress...
  23. The Fox (and JB&B in particular) was my listening choice for my morning commute back when I worked in Uptown Charlotte. Many times I would laugh out loud at particular lines while stuck in traffic and notice several other motorists around me doing the same.
  24. Yep. First time I heard it I was passing through on my way to the beach. Thought it both funny and applicable to a variety of other interactions. When they first started talking about syndication, I thought JB&B would be very popular in the markets back home. Also had the same hunch about Taco Bell -- but I'm still waiting for the local franchise owners in SW Virginia to find a way to introduce cornbread into the offerings along with refried beans..
  25. Ad from WRFX radio station in Charlotte circa 1990: "The competition says we suck. We'd just like to thank them for listening."
