This is sarcasm right?  They had 18 more wins this year than last year and made the state playoffs winning the region.

Going to have to haul in a lot more rock to get that crown back in the middle though.

Just paint the gravel green and blue and call it a day.
It'll make the kids tougher in the long run.

Grim news this morning seeing that prolific kicking coach Doug Blevins has passed. Heard they found cancer on him too late.
He is the second coaching legend with local ties to pass this week.
Tony Colobro passed earlier this week as well. Coach Colobro had his hand on a number of programs, both high school and collegiate and was a tremendous man.
RIP to these two great men.

I saw my first soccer match watching T.J. Rasnick play at Abingdon.  Knew nothing about the sport.  Watching the kids run up and down the field for 90 minutes, wow!!  Just when you thought the Dawgs were getting close to scoring, down the field the ball went with the Falcons.  To be honest, not knowing the game and its nuances, I wasn't a fan of the game.  I wasn't there for the game, I was there to see "my buddy" whose Dad made a special protective covering so T.J. could play this game without injuring his leg after surgery and chemo.   After the game, I got to talk with him and give him a huge hug.  The score didn't matter to me, T.J. efforts and wanting to play, not as  handicapped, but a talented soccer player, such an inspiration!!!
Here are some excerpts from the BDT published June 10, 2009 titled "Fighting On".
"One year ago, T.J. Rasnick was facing an uncertain future.  He was receiving treatment for Synovial sarcoma, a form of cancer found near his right hamstring.  He missed his junior year on the soccer field with the Tazewell Bulldogs and did not know if he would play again."
On June 9th, T.J. signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Emory & Henry.
"It's just a blessing to be able to stand here and be ready to go to college in the fall."  Even though Rasnick received the diagnosis on March 11, 2008, he never relinquished hope that he would be able to continue his athletic career."
'You just keep your faith in God and you can do anything," he said.  "There's not one day that I changed what I wanted to do or my goals.  It's always been the same. You've just got a never-say-die attitude."
In his final season, Rasnick reached the 100-goal milestone for his career--despite sitting out his junior season.  He had 24 goals in his final season with Tazewell, playing in just 12 games.
"If you put your faith in God, you can do anything," he said.  "You just push every day.  You live every day.  You just do everything you can and as long as you keep your faith in God you just keep going."
"It was never "I can't do this."  It was always, "Nothing's ever changed.  It's always been the same from day one."
"Just never give up," he said.  "Just keep fighting every day, keep your faith in God and you'll be just fine.  You can do anything."
I'm thankful my "grandson of the heart" never felt soccer was a waste of resources to him or those whose lives he impacted.

Heck of a game. Auburn certainly had their chance. I figured this game was going to be tight. Just two evenly matched teams. Newsflash.....my opinion only.....the Head Coach at Lancaster is a better On The Floor coach than the guy at John Marshall. It is hard to evaluate JM because their coach has to balance minutes, looks, attempts for players regarding recruiting and if I were in that situation, I would do the same. You kind of have to, but no question, the guy at Lancaster is very very good as well.

Emily Edwards of Galax won her second consecutive state championship in Shot Put with a throw of 40'-11-1/2". Breaking her Class 1 state record of 40'-6" from a year ago. She's headed to Australia this summer as part of the Junior Olympics.
Her dad played football and baseball at Haysi and Emory & Henry.

Ervinton HS was the smallest HS gym I ever played in.
I doubt the length of Lebanons floor is an issue for Auburn since they just finished playing at Cassel Collesium.

I heard that no one could agree on a venue change so it reverted back to Gate City.
And I thought the only time coaches couldn't agree was in all-district meetings...

I disagree. JM is playing within the parameters of the VH$L rules. There is no real difference between what JM is doing and what Liberty Christian Academy is doing.
The problem lies solely with VH$L!!!
The lawsuit LCA won against VHSL in 2015 opened the door for what essentially amounts to legalized recruiting. I'm not a lawyer but I would imaging VHSL would have a difficult time from a legal perspective trying to reprimand one school for recruiting while being forced to allow it through the LCA court ruling.

Cormany was the head basketball coach at Grayson County when I was in high school. The Cormany I remember is far too competitive in nature to quit. He's also perceptive enough to understand how important the experience of playing in a state tournament can be for the future of the kids he coaches and the community in general. Those kids learned a valuable lesson. Life isn't always fair. That doesn't mean you roll over and play dead.
I'm not sure how teaching kids to quit when things get hard is worth an attempt to send a message to VH$L they aren't going to understand anyway.

I agree with you Stripes. I would dare say that most of the kids on Martinsville have never been to Richmond, so just the experience of the trip would be a lifetime memory. I remember when I was keeping the scorebook for the team when they won back to back in 14-15, when I see those young men in the community they don't talk about the games as much as they talk about all the fun we had on the bus trips or other things. Would they have a chance to win, not at all !! But in my opinion you still show up and give your best effort, the VHSL needs to straightened all this out.

It’s fair to say that about a coach like Cormany who has been there and done that but the kids may have never had that chance and to rob them of that chance isn’t fair IMO. It’s just my opinion.  I never got to play in a state title game.  I have been fortunate enough to officiate one and coach in one. It was special in both of those accounts as an adult and I could tell it was just as special to my players.

Milan doesnt beat Muncie Central and no one knows who Bobby Plump is if they dont play the game.  The kids opportunities to play of a state title game are limited to begin with.  Taking the game away from them isnt the right call IMO no matter how people feel about the JM program.  Go and try to win.  You may make something unforgettable happen.

While I agree with everything above, it fails to fully account for the constant complaint older generations make against younger generations. Kids today are often criticized for being "soft" or "lazy." But the older generations raised them to be what they are. Now, that same older generation is basing hiring practices on what those "soft" or "lazy" kids like.
It's a nonsensical cycle that is spinning out of control at this point. It likely contributes to why local programs that were once traditional powers, are anything but now.

I just hope whoever makes it to Richmond has good guards and tries to run 4 corners on JM.  Play keepaway as much as possible and then possibly draw fouls and hit FTs if JM wants to be aggressive.  Would still be a tough thing to do but would like to see it tried with good ball handlers.

On this board, we often discus how kids today are just different than they were in previous generations. I don't think anyone here will argue against that point.
The same can be said for the adults in the room. Which is something we rarely, if ever, discuss. Could you imagine for a second, administrators interviewing Phil Robbins, Joel Hicks, Willis White, Norm Lineburg, or Robert Casto based on the whims of a 16 year old kid and his overzealous father?

Martinsville beat Dan River tonight 58-41. The terrible bunch play Radford Thursday at 6. Hope we can keep it within 20 points. One thing about the Dogs this year, we're short but we make up for it by being really slow.

I believe DBs radio station didnt want to pay the fee to work the game that I think the district or VHSL sets for a radio broadcast.  It wasnt that they werent allowed.   I think the old Parrothead mentioned that on Twitter about by they wouldn't be there.

I applaud your enthusiasm but my 25+ years of experience in the engineering world tell me, everything reasonable goes out the window when design and construction involve state and federal agencies.
Tree removal, sediment basins, and retaining walls all require DEQ permits before construction can begin. DEQ review of construction plans is a minimum, 9-month process. More often than not, it's longer. If they require changes to the plans, the calendar starts all over again.
