  1. UVA, I agree that you can't judge a career off of playoffs or superbowls alone but how can you rank Manning ahead of Montana??? I like Peyton a lot. I certainly like him a lot better than Brady but there is no way he ranks higher than Montana. You mentioned Montana in the NFC loss to the Giants but Peyton has had some ugly games, especially in the playoffs. He has thrown 3 TD's and 4 Int's in his 3 SB appearances. He never plays well in Foxboro and he lost to the a less than amazing Colts team, in a home game, after coming off of a bye. I like Peyton a lot but he seems to be stronger on the stats end than he is in the win column, especially in big games. GMan, Favre was a gamer no question but he threw 336 int's in his career compared to 508 td's. That's not a great ratio. If he is in your top five who do you replace? My top 5 1. Montana 2. Elway 3. Brady 4. Manning 5. Marino
  2. Ps. I didn't see that this was already being discussed on the shoutbox until after I posted my thread lol. I think there is a lot of different things to discuss on this topic. Look forward to reading your thoughts.
  3. With the Patriots winning the Super Bowl we now have 3 NFL QB's with 4 SB wins. There has been much debate in the media as to where Brady stacks up against the other best all time QB's. I was just curious how some of you would rank these 3 qb's? Below are the career Super Bowl stats on all 3 guys. Joe Montana 4-0 with 11 TD's, 0 int's and an average QB rating of 127.8 Terry Bradshaw 4-0 with 9 TD's, 4 int's and an average QB rating of 112.8 Tom Brady 4-2 with 13 TD's, 4 int's and an average QB rating of 95.3 I would definetly put Monanta first. I felt that way even before I looked up the statistics. You can't really argue with a guy who was 4-0 in 4 SB appearances and never threw an Int. It's hard to pick between Bradshaw and Brady. The stats say Bradshaw and two of Brady's wins came off of the kicking foot of Adam Vinatieri and the latest win was a result of a bone head offensive call by Seattle and an interception by the Patriot's D. Also, I was a Raiders fan when the tuck rule game happened so that doesn't help Mr. Brady out in this debate either lol. I will give Brady this, he has clearly set himself apart from Peyton in that debate but as far as how he stacks up against the other two 4 timers I would put him a close third behind Bradshaw, and both clearly behind Joe Montana.
  4. After the season that Tech had, I really don't think you are in any position to poke fun at anyone. I would be worried about getting my own house in order rather that talking smack to your in state rival who nearly beat you and sent you home for the holidays.
  5. I only revisit this topic because 3 of the 5 worst franchises that I listed have been in the news lately for benching starting QB's. The Jets went with Geno, then benched him for Vick and now they are back to Geno. The Skins benched McCoy after he lead them to victory in Dallas and now they are coming back to him after they started to realize how big of a bust RG3 is. McCoy played well in spite of the loss this past Sunday btw. And then there are the Browns. You have Hoyer who has been fairly solid and you are in the hunt for a wildcard spot but you bench him with just a few weeks to go and put in your rookie rockstar Johnny football. I wouldn't want to play for any of these teams. You have my sympathy if you are a fan of any of these teams lol.
  6. I would love to see some upsets in the top 3. I would especially like to see Fla. State lose. I think they have lucked up in several games this year and it bothers me to hear of multiple players on the team being charged with rape and other crimes but they continue being allowed to play, even though Winston was supsended for one game. I like and respect Bama a lot but a Bama loss means no SEC team in the first playoff which would probably cause some people's head's to explode lol. I would enjoy listening to the outrage over that. I feel like Bama, Oregon, TCU, and Baylor are probably playing the best football of the top 7 teams right now.
  7. Assuming that all the top ranked teams win this coming weekend and there are no upsets, who would your # 4 team be for the college playoff? Right now Bama, Oregon, and Fla. St. are pretty much a lock provided they win their final game. You have TCU, Baylor, and Ohio State all with 1 loss. Right now I would have to put TCU in. They have the best loss (lost by 3 at Baylor) and they beat 3 teams who were ranked when they played them. I would put Ohio State last in that group. I know they have been a successful program and have a strong fan base but they lost to an unranked team at home and the only two teams they have beat in the top 25 are Michigan State and Minnesota. I am liking the new system better than the BCS so far. What are your thoughts on the new system and who would you put in at # 4?
  8. This is certainly a game with a lot of story lines, high emotions, and a lot on the line. As an outsider who isn't a fan of either team, I would give a slight edge to VT. They are playing at home, they have dominated this series in recent years (even the years UVA has had a good team), and they have more on the line I feel as far as salvaging their season by keeping their bowl streak alive. One thing I am certain of, Frank will be back as coach next year. I know that Tech hasn't lived up to the standard that Beamer built for this program the past three seasons but it's kind of ridiculous to be calling for the man's job when you might miss your first bowl game in 20+ years.
  9. Can you share where it has been reported that the government has suspended the NFL's tax exempt status? I read an article written yesterday that said a congressman from NJ had propsed the government consider that move but it didn't seem like it had already taken place. Also, the article seemed to focus more on the domestic violence woes the NFL is dealing with and mentioned nothing about the Redskins mascot name controversy. Just wondering where you had heard that? Also in my book the Skins rank near the top of this list because of the coaching Carousel of 9 different coaches since Joe Gibbs stepped down (the first time) after the 1992 season and poor personal management (see drafting RGIII as one example). The mascot name controversy has nothing to do with the state of the Redskins organization woes in my opinion.
  10. I had this thought pop into my mind earlier as I heard much debate on various sports talks shows about whether or not the Jets should bench Geno Smith. One of the commentators pointed out that the Jets haven't really given Geno many offensive weapons to use even though they have 20 million in cap space. I just feel like there are certain franchises that are so mis-mannaged that the blame should be laid on the owners and front office rather than on the players. These teams are constantly getting excited about flashy draft picks or trades with hopes it will change the fortune of the team but it rarely does because of the incompetent front office. Here are my top 5 mis-managed franchises. Curious to hear yours. 1. Raiders 2. Jets 3. Jags 4. Browns 5.Redskins
  11. I haven't looked at the video online because I don't want to see someone fataly struck by a racecar. I did see the video on Foxnews which stopped the footage just before Tony struck him. There is no doubt that Tony is a hot head and can be very aggresive at times but I can't imagine he intentionally tried to hit this you man. From what I have read and heard concerning the matter it sounds like the other driver made a dangerous move walking out so close to the cars on the track and that the car ahead of Tony almost hit him. I think it was an accident plain and simple. Both he and Tony probably could have made better choices to avoid the accident but I don't think you can condemn Tony based so heavily on his past. I think Tony made a wise move that showed consideration for the family by choosing not to race at Watkins Glen. I could forsee NASCAR instituting a rule in their series that prohibits drivers from walking toward cars on the track in the future to avoid an incident like this, in one of their series. Just a sad situation and my heart goes out to the Ward family and to Tony.
  12. RyanVT, you are probably right about the stats thing. I just pulled up a soccer stat sheet online and what I posted was what I found. I still thinking keeping stats about passes being completed is weak. Basketball doesn't do that. I do like defensive struggles in football. But but low scoring games in football might be because of sacks, interceptions, and tackles for loss. Almost every soccer game is low scoring and its not because of some hard hitting defense like in football. Its because of a talented goalie (which is admirable) or because the other team was able to kick the ball to the other end of the field to prevent the other team from scoring. I understand your point about points in soccer being some of the most important points scored in all of sports but I guess I see it from the other side and that is if 1 score gives you a good chance at winning then after the first team scores, why watch (especially if they go up by 2)? In football one score never ensures that you will win. You can be up by 10 points or even 14 points with 3 or 4 minutes remaining but if the other team already has the ball in the red zone they are just one score and an onside kick recovery away from making it a game. If a team is ahead by 1 or especially 2 goals with under 5 or 10 minutes remaining in soccer there is little chance the trailing team will win. Soccer is the worlds sport but I'll stick with good old American football.
  13. Yeah, I think she is out in left field on this one. I do believe our government is more and more pushing us into a socialistic society where they take from the hardworking to give to others who they claim need it more but I think some people who feel similar to me on this go on too many witch hunts and see socialism creeping in in places where it is not. As far as soccer and the world cup, I will check espn.com to see how the US is doing as long as we are still in the tournament but if and when they are eliminated I won't pay it a second thought. I give soccer players props for their athleticism and talent because you have to be in very good shape to play soccer. That being said, that is all the credit I will give them. There isn't nearly enough scoring. To use a football term, the ball isn't in the red zone that often so there isn't even the threat of scoring very often. In my opinion it is just boring. I looked at a soccer stats sheet and with the exception of goalie saves the only stats you can record is offsides, fouls, corner kicks, assists, and goals. So basically if you aren't committing a penalty or scoring a goal you did nothing significant during the whole game lol. In baseball you have hits, rbi's, obp, doubles, triples etc. in addition to actually scoring. Same in basketball rebounds, assists, steals; Football passing yards, rushing yards, sacks, interceptions etc. So in my opinion soccer isn't communist just boring lol. 69 days until Professional American Football season starts!!!!
  14. Oh where to begin lol. The entire country would be better off if Harry Reid never went to a Washington Redskins game again or for that matter just never went back to Washington D.C. at all. We have far more important issues for the government to be focusing in than a NFL team mascot. Also, even if it weren't politicians pushing this, the whole argument is still juvenile and petty. Why is it a crime if a small group of people are offended by something. There comes a time when you just have to overlook certain minority opinions no matter how loud they yell. If you don't, then you give random radical minorities the power to change the entire nation. I mean if the Redskins are forced to change their names where does it stop? Whose to stop someone from complaining that Notre Dame needs to change their mascot because it depicts people of Irish descent as being violent and wanting to fight. Finally, if Harry Reid really cares about the Native American Indians then why doesn't he push some legislation to help them get some of their land back and provide more opportunities for them to get better jobs so they are better able to provide for their families. I personally think the Native Americans have more to complain about than any other minority but changing the name of a football team isn't going to make their day to day life any better or easier. If these people who say they care about the Native Americans really do, then prove it by doing something meaningful to help them rather than going on the news and talking about how racist and offensive a NFL team name is. The inmates are running the asylum!!!
  15. I think you're exactly right that these five guys will likely find their way back into a terrorist group and will more than likely carry out attacks somewhere. I don't understand for the life of me why our president thinks that you can negotiate with terrorists and that you can just be nice to them and somehow they will no longer want to attack us. The Taliban is not going to hate us any less because we released 5 of their guys. Instead they will laugh at our stupidity and will use those same guys to try and hurt us. When it comes to dealing with terrorists I like Teddy's philosophy of speaking softly and carrying a big stick.
  16. I'm sure that many of you have heard about our president negotiating a deal to release 5 notorious terrorists from prison so they can return to the Taliban for the release of an American POW. On the surface this sounds like a great thing that an American soldier is coming home but the underlying details of this deal scares and infuriates me. 1. According to the news reporting I have read our president is legally required to inform congress 30 days prior to a deal like this being carried out and he didn't. This shouldn't be a shock, as our president has bypassed congress and the checks and balances of our government on countless occassions but I am baffled at how no one in power seems to want to do anything about the fact that he seems to think he is above the law and that the constitution and laws of our nation don't apply to him. 2. You might be able to overlook the presidents bypassing congress if not for the rest of the story. According to news reporting, there is a significant amount of evidence that the soldier we negotiated to have released, communicated pointed remarks of criticism against America just 3 days before he went missing and there is also a lot of information (including testimonies from his platoon mates) pointing to the likelyhood that he deserted (see video in link below). 3. The icing on the cake for me is that this man's parents stood with our president and his father praised the name of Allah in Arabic for the release of his son while the taliban posted a video of their 5 prisoners returning home and said it was a great victory (see video link). To me if the taliban likes it then Americans shouldn't. I don't mean this to be a bash on our president or a republican vs democrat thing. I am just seriously concerned for my country and very disturbed by the details that are starting to come out about this prisoner transfer. I can't see how anyone who loves America, loves our freedom, and wants to see us remain strong could condone such actions or have even an ounce of confidence in our current administration after pulling something like this. Please let me know if you have heard of something different that sheds a new light on this but from what I have read and seen it causes me to be very disturbed about America's current leadership. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uAmRW0IDa7o#t=0
  17. Yes I am aware that VT's staff has brought on some new coaches the past year or so but it hasn't made much of a difference yet and you still have several guys on staff that have been their for awhile like Wiles, Gray, Foster, and Stinespring. Even with the new additions on staff it won't be enough to get them a National Championship. If it will make you feel better I will revise my earlier statement. Even in light of all the success Frank Beamer has brought the Tech football program, VT will not win a National Championship with him as their head coach.
  18. You are really setting yourself up to look foolish by building a National Championship Trophy Case for a trophy you haven't earned yet. If the new AD was the one who made the desicion to have the case removed then that is a good sign for Tech's future. More changes are needed though if Tech hopes to win a National Championship. I think Beamer and his staff has taken Tech as far as they can. Tech will not win a National Chmapionship with the current coaching staff. On the other hand I do think Beamer should be respected for building such a solid program and I hope Tech will let him leave on his terms unlike Bowden and Fla. St.
  19. I was just curious what some of your thoughts might be on the impending QB competition between Geno Smith and Michael Vick?? I for one am certainly not sold that Geno will be a solid starter in the NFL over the long haul but both his coach and his stats seemed to indicate that he did improve as the season went along last year. He had 10 total TD's (passing and rushing) and 13 Int's during the first half of the season and had 8 total TD's and 8 Int's during the second half of the season. I really don't understand why NY brought in Vick. While he is one of the most athletic and dynamic players football has ever seen, he, unlike Geno, has a proven track record and it indicates that he can't stay healthy and he is very inconsistent as a pocket passer. I don't think he or NY fans will be content for him to simply backup Geno but if history is any indication even if he wins the starter job, he probably won't stay healthy all season and Geno will be back on the field anyway. My take is that NY brought in Vick for hype and headlines, kind of like bringing in Tebow a few years back. I think this move will only serve to put more pressure on Geno, which isn't beneficial to the team. And while it remains to be seen if Geno can be a solid starter in the NFL, I think there is no question that Vick won't be reliable as a productive QB over the long haul. Not really sure what the Jets are thinking. Interested to hear your thoughts.
  20. The EPA did some good things years ago when there was horrible smog in places like LA and NYC but now they coming up with some ridiculous requirements and it seems like very few people in Washington will oppose them. I don't know why people aren't hearing alarms and seeing flashing warning lights when they see the government trying to do stuff like this. When the government starts dictating what kind of stoves people can own and the kind of wood that can be burnt in their homes then our freedom in this country is fading fast. I would love to have seen my grandparents reaction if the government had told them what kind of wood they could burn back in the 50's and 60's. Our freedom is rapidly disappearing in this country and it seems like only a few realize it.
  21. Yes, I'm sure the fact that Junior had 6 prior restrictor plate points race wins before yesterday, had finished runner up in 3 of the past 4 Daytona 500's, and that two of his team mates finish in the top 5 along with him had nothing to do with his victory. Nascar planned the whole thing. Man, you would think with Nascar being so good at fixing outcomes they could have at least orchestrated a 1-2 finish for Junior and the #3 and maybe have even gotten Danica in the top 5.....
  22. I've watched Nascar for over 20 years and the quality of racing has certainly declined and I don't like Nascar nearly as much today as I used to but thinking Nascar rigged qualifying to get the #3 on the pole is a stretch. All of the RCR cars were fast, including RCR affiliated cars like Martin Truex. Also there is no way you can rig a car to win a pole on a 2 1/2 mile track and still have the guys behind him within a couple hundredths of a second of his time. It might be a fun conspiracy to talk about but it's not realistic. Plus if Nascar was in the business of rigging things then Dale jr. would have won far more races over the past few years than he has.
  23. Dale wasn't going to win the championship but it is sad for him to have to miss two races near the end of what has been a great season. I was a huge fan of Dale Sr. and pull for Jr. now. He is certainly not the driver his dad was but I admire how he carries and handles himself and this was an admirable decision. Hope to see you back healthy soon Jr.
  24. Huge win for WVU. Geno is still great even on a bit of a down night and Buie was spectacular. If he can keep running like that after Alston returns that will bring some great balance to the offense and make them even more terrifying to defend. Alston would help with pass blocking and short yardage runs. Defense still needs to improve but they did enough the other night. Even with the D's woes, if we don't turn the ball over it is going to be hard for anyone to beat us. OU and Kansas State still concerns me and you can never take a week off in the Big 12. For now though, it is nice to be undefeated after beating a solid Texas team in Austin and it is nice to be in the National Championship conversation.
  25. I think what Gov. Romney was implying is that those people who are content sponging of the tax payers and the government aren't likely to vote for him anyway so why spend time trying to convince them. It was a poor choice of words no doubt but he points out a very real truth. If you give people money and they don't have to work for it then they make little effort to find work. Btw, the latest "damning sound bite" came from our VP yesterday when he said that the middle class has been buried for the last 4 years. Indeed it has been Joe, and that was on your watch along with your boss. Time to go a different direction!
