I can tell you with much authority that Gate City has turned down multiple transfers just in the last five years!  People are going to hate you for being successful, I was in sales for 19 years and won every sales award my company (companies) ever had and people just hate you for success. When Gate City was Single A, they were Single A attendance wise. There was no fudging the numbers! It sounds like Gate City pissed in Stan's Cheerios. But just for Stan the number of the day is 28!

And Gate City had A numbers for several years opting instead to play AA before dropping down.

Hey GC1 i noticed your laughing emoji toward my penalty disparity comment. I just call it like i see it. I would like to apologize though to any of the kids that may be reading. They were super excited and deserved the win. They made the plays and Richlands didn't. But man y'all must've been hiding that speed y'all had. Heard no talk of it. No 2, 11, and 12 has some wheels. Wasnt expecting that at all. Best of luck the rest of the season. Would love to see them build off this win and make the playoffs. Was just a little upset with the refs. Again good luck!

So the refs were calling ghost penalties?

GC fans thought they had patience when they waited out Chris Akers.  That was just the beginning.  It’s going to take the better part of the 2020s to get that program back to being a postseason threat, if it can be achieved at all.

I agree as I had this conversation with someone just the other day. The GC program has been affected all the way down through LL. Once that happens it's hard to get those kids back as they now have other interests. It's not an overnight solution and folks need to be patient. I think GC will have more wins this season but they do have a long ways to go before relevance is reached.

Hats to the whole GC team last night. I feel like everyone stepped and got things done without Ervin. Dean dropped 40 and we got 21 from the rest  of the team which is huge considering the rest of the team probably hasn’t combined for that much in a long while. Very good defense, looked like the days of old. Very happy with the team effort. GC now leads the series 17-0 in boys, poor McAnus.

Yes. Very proud of the team stepping up in the face of adversity. Hopefully they will stay highly motivated.

Congrats to the KIDS. Credit goes to the KIDS for not giving up during another Akers lackluster season. 3-7 would be great, I just hope 3 wins to end the season doesn’t justify another 365 day extension for Akers by the school board. But it probably would.

While I'm not an Akers fan, it's amazing what you can do when you don't fumble 5-9 times....

It's risk of injury. Mostly mothers making that decision.

And because of this you will see football decline even more. Not just at GC or in SWVA. The risk of concussions and the media attention it has gotten are worrying parents, and rightly so. And football is pointed out as the culprit not the other sports.

I believe it's a combination of it being a down cycle and bad coaching.

I won't disagree that the talent is down. But, it's not 1-9 down. Plus, with better coaches, kids playing elsewhere or not at all could help immensely if they came back. GC football really isn't a quick fix right now. Going back into LL it may take a few years after a coaching change.

Mac McClung/Zac Ervin and the recent GC basketball success may have turned the youth into aspiring basketball players and it's possible that's having a negative affect on the football program.

It's not basketball that's having a negative effect on the program. Several kids either not playing or transferred. The problem lies within the program at the top.

If GC goes 0-10, there will not be another year.  Right or wrong, and maybe it's wrong, but the fans will not tolerate that here.  They just will not, and again, maybe more time is needed, but I'm telling you, 0-10 and you can forget about it.  As a matter of fact, 1-9 will likely not cut it, so lets shoot for a 2 win season at Great City!!!!!  Yeeaaaaaa.  I'm going to drink now!

I'm seriously doubting GC can get 2 wins. Heard 3 players quit this week and would be willing to bet there will be more. The entire system from LL up is in disarray.

    36 yards of offense.

    2 first downs.

Calling a timeout on 4th and 8 deep in your own territory, then fake it. (Genius!!! They'll never see that coming!!!)

Injured players playing on phones during game.

Injured players and reserves laughing and cutting up during butt stomping.

Whispers about the coaching from players after the game.

I believe we have officially drove the last nail in the coffin tonight.

You know it's bad when fans start leaving before the 4th qtr even starts.

Welcome to the new norm of Gate City football!

IMO, it won't get better any time soon either. Boone does have a good team, but GC got outgained what? 411 yards? There are already several kids not playing who could greatly help this team and the players we have now are the ones who are playing because they love football regardless of who is coaching them. Just wait until they are discouraged enough to quit playing. I don't think most fans realize yet just how bad it is behind the scenes, but they will.

Gate City has the talent but that talent is focusing on basketball. If McClung and Ervin were in the backfield or at wide receiver Gate City wins a lot more games just off their athleticism. The success of the basketball program is hurting the football team. Akers needs to recruit those kids to football or they will continue to struggle.

Akers can recruit these kids to FB til the cows come home and unless he makes it fun to play for him they won't. Akers has to sell his program. I respect the kids playing FB now while the program is down. They play because they love GCHS football. As you say, kids like Ervin/McClung would be difference makers in FB. But you can't blame them for not wanting to especially with them being recruited fairly high in BB.

There's really no point in debating it.  We will find out in 11 weeks how many games GC won. I do know one thing, though.  They moved the ball against Graham at will.  Either Graham's run defense is not good, which I don't believe, or GC is pretty good at running the ball.  If GC can get some steady QB play, I see them winning 6 games.

Moved the ball at will but couldn't score. Of course, TO's played a role, but not being able to score has to be concerning. Granted, this was a meaningless glorified scrimmage. I'd go with a safe bet 5-5 season. With the numbers GC has out they are in deep trouble if the injury bug hits hard.

If we landed Oscar, we would be state champions hands down. I just don't see us getting him. But the stars have aligned before, you never know. It's just highly doubtful.

I suppose today told the tale of him coming to GC if he were in school or not.

  14. Gate City also has to stop losing some of their better athletes to other schools. There aren't many that are lost but as was stated above, sometimes it only takes a couple of talented kids to make a difference at a lower classification. And we can talk about kids playing only one sport but at times it's a matter of not liking a coach or the coach not getting kids interested in playing the sport they coach.

  15. There's no way you can defend the actions of the GC coach. You don't cuss at kids and you don't try to fight the other coaching staff. It's pretty simple. Not to mention, this behavior has happened before. He should not be coaching after continuing to act like this.

I'm calling bull on this. I've known Scotty for nearly 30 years and I have never heard him cuss once. Did he get angry? Of course, wouldn't you if one of your players was getting fouled like that and the offending players coach didn't have enough class to get him to the bench and tell him to settle down? And I doubt Scotty wanted to "fight" anyone. He's one of the most laid back persons around and if he gets to the fighting point, well, it's probably gonna happen. lol
