  1. The only truly funny thing Southbound has ever said
  2. To do the playoffs this way and to make it more equal state wide(as this does) there are naturally gonna be some long travel times somewhere. I personally dont think many people have a problem w/ it, but im sure there will be some who complain(espicially after their team loses). But at that point in the playoffs long travel distances are to be expected. I like it and I think it makes the playoffs more interesting. As well as helping to ensure the best 2 teams are in the finals Grundy could be an interesting team in this setup, providing their enrollment hasnt increased. They would go from D3 down to D1. Some of the traditional D2 powers that could potientally be pushed down could make things interesting, as well as some of the previous D1 teams that could get moved up to D2.
  3. Ok page 8, 68-8-10, "Section semifinal winners are cross-bracketed for state semifinals" So each section doesent have a champion like the old Region setup? Once each Section is down to 2 teams it would be, S/SW 1 vs N/NE 2 N/NE 1 vs S/SW 2 Correct? or are we reading it wrong? That could lead to some travel issues
  4. I dont know what the stripends are locally, but "in terms of teachers salaries" Washington County is at the top. I couldnt find the stripend #s on some school district websites so I didnt have anything to compare to. But it would bet that thats not too far off average
  5. Norton City had considered joining its school system w/ Wise Co. The reason was WC originally planned on building all new buildings, which would of coure be much better than JIBs current building and would afford their students more/better opportunities. Since WC has decided on simply contracting into already existing buildings Norton City has pulled out of joining. As far as AA, it depends; If JIBs students were sent to JJK/Pound(the closest school) then yes that one would be AA, if JIBs students were sent to Coeburn/St Paul (not as close but still only 10-15 minutes away) then it might still be A. Coeburn/StP/JIB might only have 780 students, that is assuming as I do that alot of StPs kids are from Russell Co. Norton probably wouldnt like this setup but it would be the only way to keep all three schools in A. With being so far from another AA school(Abingdon, an hour away) and being so close to being A anyway that school could probably apply for and recieve a hardship and be allowed to play A ball. But I really dont see any of this happening Of course the words "decided" or "planned" are awfully strong for whats goin on in Wise County. Lee High has just over 700 students, safely an A school, and its Lee High not Lee County (the county has 2 high schools)
  6. In SWVA the best paying county(in terms of teachers salaries) is Washington, the stripends for football are Head Coach 4,070 Asst Coach 2,355 By working year round I meant running the weight program(not just being involved) as well as coaching during the season
  7. I guess there is alot of money floating around Kingsport, and im assuming the fact that it is a city school opens up more money. That seems like a rediculious amount of money, just to coach. But I guess at a program like that the HC is really working year-round
  8. I had no idea a HC got paid that much, I knew a teaching salary w/ his experience is 40,000+. 20k is ALOT
  9. How is DB able to pay that kind of money?
  10. The numbers will end up being even smaller; alot of St. Pauls kids will go to Castlewood(alot of them live in Russell Co), alot of Pounds kids will go to Clintwood(alot of athletes already do), and some of Appys kids will go to Lee High(some are from Lee Co) and others will go to JI Burton(I dont understand why but they will). All three schools will all be single A. PV/Appy will probably be around 750 JJK/P right at 700 and C/StP 525(maybe less) The numbers are just my guess
  11. I just want to compare the difference between good community support and bad community support. Look at the "Whats comming back" thread which is focused on Graham and compare it to ths posts by fans of Patrick Henry. Graham doesent even have a coach yet and the fans are excited that a change has taken place, mean while the folks at PH are pissed that they got an experienced coach who truly cares about his players. Is it just me or is there something wrong w/ this picture? Maybe Palmer would have been better off staying in the Wise Co./St. Paul mess.
  12. I understand that TC Williams overcame alot but the movie did make it seem as though TCW were the underdogs, I would say being more than twice the size of your opponent would eliminate any team from underdog status. I see where he is comming from. He wasnt talking about the off field issues just the on field inequality. Try combining Richlands and Graham about 5-6 years ago let them kick the crap out of Grundy and then talk about how hard they had it.
  13. Thats true, its kinda the kickoff of the season for both teams, when things really get started. Although it hasnt been much of a game the past few years. The last time Haysi won was regular season '06, Clintwood won in the playoffs that year and its been all Clintwood ever since. Haysi had a chance in '07 but had a few mistakes that really put them out of it.
  14. I kinda hate to see that happen; by playing at the end of the season both teams are at the top of their game and I kinda like the buildup to the BDD season but whatever it takes to fill out both teams schedules
  15. Its gonna be tough. I could see several teams playing each other twice just to fill out their schedules
  16. The biggest of the three will be around 750 students, still Single A. Twin Springs is pretty pathetic. Of course their fans always say "he is just here to get an education", its just a coincidence that they are very good basketball players
  17. Im afraid it might be another rough season for Haysi. I havent been around the team at all this offseason. We lose 2 recievers including Newberry who was the best athlete on the team and couple of linemen that played both ways. As far as defense is concerned we are gonna be small(like last season) but I think there might be a little addition by subtraction this year, some guys just wont listen to the coaches. The offense is probably gonna look alot like last years did, a little bit of everything. Athletes will be lacking again this season. Who knows who is gonna play FB and TB?
  18. I didnt know they lost that much! Footballs in the air next year at Hurley! Maybe moreso than Haysi?
  19. The Beaver has the weight and reach advantage. May not be a fair fight? Why dont schools use mascots like that more often? There not tough but are lots of fun! And you cant beat the Golden Gophers! My vote for best mascot ever
  20. Who did they lose from last years team other than Rawlings?
  21. I would have to go see the "Battle of the Furry Critters"!!! Bluefield / Graham
  22. I would assume Hurley will be competitive w/ them, Hurley had a good team last season and should have a very good team this upcomming season. RC wasnt very good last season, TW on the other hand had some fast players but werent very good, Hurley shouldnt have any problem w/ either team. Who did those 2 replace on Hurleys schedule? How are the Rebels at RB this season?
  23. I just thought you used the pic because Groundhogs are cool! Maybe one of the upcomming consolidated schools(one of the 3 Wise Co or Dickenson Co) should use the venerable Woodchuck as a mascot? Unfortunately I doubt it will happen, DC seems to either be going w/ Miners or Wolfpack(please god Wolfpack) and who knows what WC will do?
  24. Its a long way from Buefield to Lee High or the Sullivan Co schools
  25. I feel that the 7on7s actually pushes offenses even more toward a spread style offense. Not just because the QB and Backs get more reps themselves but by the time 2adays start they are way ahead of the linemen
