Compton at Tennessee High
Widespread_Panic replied to Westisthebest's topic in SWVA Baseball & Softball
Be Being good at a sport rarely equates to being a good coach of that sport. From what I've read in this thread it seems like the player should have just stuck to travel ball. Playing for a high school team can be a huge difference from playing for a travel ball team. -

Could be a good lesson for current athletes to take away from this. The grass isn't always greener when you transfer. -

Seems like if Dad is the expert he should be coaching a team instead of coaching from the stands. -

That almost always starts with the parents and then trickles down to their kids. -
How did Trivette get player of the year when her team finished 4th in a 2A district and they lost in the first round of regions? I think she is a great player but her team was not very successful this year.

So where’s the Graham vs J Marshall thread?

Science Hill had at least 2 division 1 players on that team. JoVann Johnson played for UMass and Nathaniel Bailey played for Virginia Tech. -

Abingdon should be the favorite in the Mountain District. They return their top 2 leading scorers. Wise and Union should be in contention. After that most of the teams will be in rebuilding mode. -
Wise will have the advantage in coaching and the best player on the court. I like their odds.

This is a big part of the problem at Virginia High. Just take responsibility. Your basketball team was out of control and they had 0 discipline for a majority of the year. You can compare them to a million different schools or events but it's not going to change the fact that the basketball team embarrassed your school system. There should be consequences handed down starting with the parent and coaching staff and then the players.

Complete agree. If you have watched the boys or girls play for Virginia High the last few years this behavior is no surprise. They have behaved poorly for a while now and it was just a matter of time before something like this took place.

Who will be the victim from the west?

If they were to cross-bracket the tournament the VHSL would lose out on the opposing fans and their gate money. It would be a challenge for fans to travel that far of a distance on a week night. I would think it is mostly a financial decision. -
1D Boys - Patrick Henry & Chilhowie advance. Both teams have too much of a talent advantage to lose this game. Coach Frazier and Coach Damron are both superior than their counterparts in this matchup but they don't have enough players to make up the difference. 2D Girls - Ridgeview & Central win. Better known as the Mountain District invitational. The Mountain has better players and coaches at almost every school compared to the Southwest. 2d Boys - Graham v Central is a toss up. Is Graham's coach back for the game? Is Wise ready to take the next step despite their youth? Virginia High beats what has been a disappointing season for Gate City.
-
or they could do it the respectable way and build a program off of their own talent and a youth system instead of cheating the system and taking from other schools...
-
I think Battle girls beat both Virginia High and Graham and they didn't even make top 4 in the Mountain District.
-
Definitely should go to Hayes. His first year on varsity they go undefeated in the Mountain District. Ethan Collins is good but in his previous three years on varsity Wise Central's record was .500 at best.

I've seen the video multiple times and there is a reason the refs eject the VA High player and not the Graham player. I don't see anyone trying to "sell" it. VA High player clearly bear hugs the Graham player and slams her to the ground.
-
Va High girl's had a post player ejected in the Graham game for what looked like a wrestling style takedown. No mention of this by the Bristol Herald for some reason but she will have to sit out the next 2 games.
-
I thought Emory & Henry got a lot better once he left.
-
Both. Central is good with a lot of young talent. The rest of the district is down from previous years.

Southwest Virginia Top 10 - January 26, 2025
Widespread_Panic replied to BlueDevil4Life2008's topic in SWVA Basketball
In no way does that game qualify as a big matchup for either team. -
The atmosphere was great and it was good to see the student sections participating as opposed to staring at their phones! The tempo of the game and the size of the court definitely favored PH. Full court pressure and an up tempo pace gives the Rebels problems. George Wythe will have no problem with either of these teams down the road.
-
I would add Wise Central with those 2. Ean Hayes is starting to light it up and they are currently undefeated in the Mountain District. Va High heavily relies on the 3 and creating turnovers. If they are having an off shooting night and playing a team who can protect the ball the Bearcats can be beaten.

Which M7 team on the boy's side has had the equivalent of an Emma McAmis for the last 4 years?
-
I attended regional games at both of those sites last year and UVA Wise does a much better job of hosting the event. Virginia Tech didn't even have their video board turned on to show the players or the game. It was disappointing. I thought UVA Wise made a much bigger deal about the games.

Outside of Wise Central the Mountain 7 is pretty mediocre this year. All of the teams below Wise are fairly equal and will play close games with each other. Wise has too many scoring options plus they are just now starting to gel with a mix of seniors and talented underclassmen.
