  1. I truly believe, If Owen concentrated solely on golf and played more than 12 times a year, he'd be an ACC/SEC caliber player like Jake Albert. But he's such a ridiculous athlete, he deserves to play basketball and baseball as much as he wants. This is why players will run through brick walls for Tony Dunford! I hate this so much for David. He's such an awesome kid.
  2. Golf is such an accessible sport in this part of Virginia. It's far more expensive and thus, far less accessible in other parts of the state commonwealth. I've said for years, Emory & Henry could take only the top talent from SWVA and be a Top 25 D2 golf program in the country! It's a shame they couldn't see that and shuttered the program. I'm a golf nerd so, I'm going to elaborate. A couple of years ago, the NCAA implemented roster limits for all D1 golf programs. Now, D1 golf programs are only permitted to have 8 players on the roster. Any violation of this rule negates that school from using NIL for golf. That's some 1,800 fewer golfers playing at the D1 level. As a result, D2 has become a powerhouse. Kids overlooked or undervalued because they didn't play AJGA growing up are going to D2 programs rather than being extended walk-on opportunities at the D1 level. Therefore, D2 is akin to Class 2 in VHSL football. Deeper and much more of a gauntlet than any other division of the sport!
  3. Benson Blevins from George Wythe is already on the team. Three out of eight on the roster from SWVA this fall!
  4. I hate that for the kid! I hope he’s able to rehabilitate and not have it affect his golf career at Radford too much. I don’t know him and Don well but do know them through golf circles. Dandy Don is as good a guy as I’ve met.
  5. I grew up with the Jackson’s. Their dad, MD was one of my coaches. We lived in the same community growing up. Dyer is my age and Derrick is my brothers age. Dyer is the principle at Sheffey Elementary School in Wythe County. If memory serves, Dyer’s wife was also quite an athlete.
  6. Owen finished with 39 points and 9 rebounds. He's averaging 38.4 points per game for the season. Hope David Goode is okay after leaving the game with a knee injury in the first half. I know him and his dad a little through golf circles. He's a great kid headed to Radford to play D1 college golf.
  7. Owen finished T7 in the VHSL state golf tournament with a 78. Pretty good for a kid that excels at two other sports and plays golf as many times in a year, as I play in a month.
  8. Facilities matter with today's kids. OHA has quaint, modest facilities to say the least, which used to be charming. Charming isn't in today's teenagers vernacular so, they will have to address that somehow I would imagine. But I'm not sure any of that matters if they cannot figure out how to level the playing field in terms of NIL.
  9. Yerrick Stoneman is a lifelong friend of mine. I have some knowledge of the situation. I'll share what I believe to be suitable for public consumption and keep what I'm not certain about to myself. OHA hired Carmelo Anthony as the GM of basketball operations earlier this summer. Anthony's first order of business was to fire Yerrick and hire Anthony's long-time friend and AAU (Team Melo) coach John Zito as the new head coach. That transition hasn't been as fruitful as Anthony, OHA, and Zito lead everyone to believe. Oak Hill already has 4 loses this season. One of which was to a mediocre Davidson Day (Steph Curry) program that has been trounced by the better programs in Charlotte so far this season. Davidson Day is 10-6 and OHA is 13-4 on the season. OHA is at a disadvantage with NIL. They don't have the funds to compete with other EYBL programs such as Montverde Academy. Montverde paid Cooper Flagg three times what OHA had available to spend on the entire team. Yerrick was well liked by former players. It's my opinion, they won't get the donations from former players the way they thought they would just by giving Carmelo Anthony the keys to the basketball kingdom. Zito isn't very well liked either. OHA has secured millions in funding from Saint Germain Academy in Paris to be a feeder soccer program for the French Academy Soccer program. They seem to be more focused on soccer right now and basketball has slipped. Yerrick's new program is Greenville High School. They are currently 7-2 with loses to CATS Academy of Boston and Archbishop Moeller of Cincinnati. Both of those programs are elite! Greenville already has a 50-45 win over the #1 ranked AAAAA program in South Carolina (Westwood). Yerrick's other former team, Ridge View SC, is also in the Arby's Classic. Yerrick won 4 Class AAAAA state championships as head coach of Ridge View from 2018-2022.
  10. Dunford was a standout at Pulaski County High School and attended Radford University. He was an assistant coach at Pulaski before becoming an assistant at Roanoke College. His first head coaching position was at Christiansburg. He also spent two seasons as head coach at Brookville before taking over GW in 2019.
  11. I can smell the Cape Jasmine through the window screen and hear the soft southern winds through the Live Oak trees coming off that photo!
  12. Reed seems to have a good plan in place with some excellent assistants, including former Galax QB and Virginia Tech TE Cole Pickett. It's just a remarkable downturn in male athletes spread out over several grade levels. Just not enough bodies right now. The current middle school crop looks promising though.
  13. Senior Lauren Bouchard totally dominated the Galax Powderpuff game. She weaved her way through the junior class defense with tremendous athleticism, speed, agility, quickness and precision. It was truly remarkable. *Give me a break! Not a lot of football to choose from over here right now.
  14. Great article about the Dawyot family. https://cardinalnews.org/2025/12/11/2-unlikely-brothers-have-led-glenvar-to-the-doorstep-of-a-state-championship/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook&fbclid=IwRlRTSAOoQw5leHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEe6RivZUyRl2jPOSTjt0jzICsZMnHcRvwju9qaLwgBGVJXfsPh5ko3CTlFx40_aem_Ko5WH_Vc8z69lA2w3dgh-A
  15. I can't this weekend. Excuses, I know. I really would but I'm not able to leave town. My uncle passed away about 2-1/2 years ago. He didn't have any surviving immediate family. His estate was left to his nieces and nephews. Within a few days of his passing, meth-head squatters moved in and took the place over. Using legal means, it took us 18-months to get them out. The place was destroyed. After some necessary renovations thanks to the squatters, the estate sale is Friday/Saturday. At least what's left anyway!
