  2. I can't speak for other sports, but this is 100% fact for golf. I'm friends with multiple college golf coaches at varying divisions of the NCAA and NAIA. Every single one have told me on multiple occasions, if they attend a junior event to see a particular player, they already now his ability. They are far more interested in how the kid conducts himself, interacts with other players, tournament staff, and gallery. They even keep a keen eye on how the player interacts with his family. There's an interesting YouTube video where a golf "influencer" goes through a mock tryout with the Auburn coaching and training staff. The head golf coach doesn't mince words when he says, "I'll take attitude over ability every single time." Auburn is currently ranked #1 in the country, has the #1 ranked amateur in the world on the roster (Jackson Koivun), and won the NCAA National Championship in 2024.
  3. A lot of it's private so colleges have no control over it. There are plenty of online resources available to guide prospective students in the right direction. But those students need to have their academics in order to even be considered.
  4. There's roughly $3,000 in academic scholarship money available for every dollar of athletic scholarship money available in the United States. According to a recent report by Forbes, an estimated $100-million-dollars in academic scholarship money goes unawarded each year because nobody applies for it and/or aren't qualified academically to receive it. Imagine if society pushed academics as much as it pushed athletics!
  5. You didn’t have to. It comes out in your posts organically with all those backhanded compliments.
  6. You don’t like anyone not from Lebanon, do you?
  7. Luray beat Central Woodstock head to head twice in three matchups. To suggest Fort or Luray wouldn’t stand a chance against Graham is ridiculous.
  8. Correct. I meant Tyler Lumsden. Ended up pitching at Clemson.
  9. Why did Mac McClung when he had Ervin and Dean as teammates? Why did JJ Redick when he had Luke Hancock as a teammate? Some guys are different! Others around them know they are different. Doesn’t mean they aren’t very good. It means they get to play with greatness most of us never experience.
  10. Not at all. Kenton Sutphin should be all-state as well. Leads VHSL in assists and steals. He also scored his 1,000th career point last night. Those 7 seniors have been together since 2nd grade. Core group from the baseball and basketball success they’ve had in recent years. Jackson’s brother will be on varsity next season as a freshman.
  11. Luray wins it 84-82 in double OT. Owen Jackson with 53 points!!! Free throws were the difference.
  12. Fort makes free throws down the stretch, this game doesn’t go to OT.
  13. Owen Jackson buries a buzzer beater to send it to OT!!!
  14. Yeah, I think he may have gotten a bit tongue tied. He hasn’t done it since pregame.
  15. Do these guys do any research? They are already calling Owen Jackson “Jackson Owens.”
  16. He seems to have it now that the games almost over.
  17. Can somebody teach this guy how to pronounce Galax!!!
  18. WTF did I just watch???
  19. My wife has spent the better part of the week securing hotel rooms for the pep-band and cheerleaders to present to school board last night. They were looking at 13 rooms just for the band and cheerleaders. Bus drivers can't share a room with students or staff. They are required to have their own room. Staff (cheer coaches and band director) obviously can't share rooms with students. Five rooms for the cheerleaders and staff (3 for students, 2 for staff) Six rooms for the band and staff (4 for male students, 1 for female students, 1 for staff). A room each for the drivers (1 bus, 1 equipment van). It adds up faster than you might think!
  20. Harless is a far superior football mind to Travis Turner. I agree with you, completely.
  21. Just my opinion having lived in the Roanoke/Botetourt area for a decade. Harless runs a tight ship. He doesn't tolerate outside noise. He's a disciplinarian. His program will speak with one voice....his!!! I don't foresee him allowing spectators or 73 assistant coaches on the sidelines. He's as close to a throwback to the 80's football coach as this area will have in this day and age. He'll win state championships at Union if the locals get out of his way and let him do his thing. Will they? Time will tell but changes will take place. Whether the locals like it or not.
  22. Not at all what i expected going into the game. Galax is so young, I thought they were a year away, at least. But that’s the thing with such a young team. Give them an ounce of confidence and they don’t know they’re not supposed to be doing this yet. I honestly don't know what to expect from Luray but i overheard several people (Galax and GW faithful) saying last night was the state championship game. GW beat Luray 51-48 about 6-weeks ago.
  23. Galax girls play Luray as well. They appear to be battle tested at 18-10. They’ve played a very top heavy schedule. Mostly against Class 2 and Class 3 schools. It’ll be interesting to see how these two games play out.
  24. Owen finished with 31 points. He had 24 at halftime and didn’t play but a few minutes of the second half.
