  2. That's about how I see it playing out as well.

  4. The Nats have baffled the imagination for about 6 seasons now. They have gotten less out of more than any other professional sports organization over that time period. Several instances of dugout scuffles going back several years. Someone who has been around baseball at the highest levels for most of his adult life told me when the Nats shut down Strasburg in the middle of a pennant race, "they are teaching that young man how to not compete."
  5. I have to admit, they were fairly impressive against Galax and Grayson. It wasn't the same product Carroll has put on the field over the past decade. They are deficient in a few areas but Turner will develop those positions over time. But they compete!
  6. A bit off topic but I didn't deem it worthy of a new thread. I was told something over the weekend by someone I have known since childhood that I can't wrap my mind around and certainly don't believe. I can't find proof to support either side of the argument. I was hoping someone on here would have some definitive rebuttal. It made it's way yo that other board so, I thought I would seek clarification here. He stated, if a kid enters 9th grade and leaves the public school system in favor of home-school, the school system must count that student until that students class graduates from high school. I get the school system would likely be required to count this student for the remainder of the 9th grade school year, but surely not an additional 3 more years!?!?!
  7. Northside has an impressive resume so far this season. With wins over Pulaski, Salem and Lord Botetourt, they may be a bit too much for Galax.

  9. Not that Iā€™m aware of. Over the summer Grayson and three other schools across the state petitioned VHSL to change classifications for the next cycle. Three were unanimously approved while Grayson was rejected by a vote of 0-22-1.
  10. How will Grayson's drop to Class 1 for the 2019-2020 school year affect Fort Chiswell? Will Fort Chiswell be content remaining in the MED as the only Class 2 member of an all Class 1 district?
  11. The whole SWD mess was just that, a mess. But I believe this was always the desired outcome for Grayson. Even going back to them flirting with the SWD.
  12. Like football, boys basketball will have years where the cupboard is full and will compete and possibly win, a state title. But they will have down years as well where they will make the playoffs and get slammed. Last season, the boys team was 22-4 against a Class 1 heavy schedule. They lost to Union 51-45 in the first round of the playoffs. I feel like they would have been a quarter-final team in Class 1 at worst. Girls basketball hasn't been competitive for quite a few years now. They were 5-19 last season.
  13. In football, they would have to be considered top 4 in 1C if we were discussing this season, wouldn't they? They will have a few down years like any other small school but I believe it makes them much more viable on a state level in a bunch of sports. They should be considered one of the favorites year in and year out for a state title in baseball!
  14. From what I have been told, VHSL didn't want Grayson to drop to 1D and were originally denied. Upon appeal, Grayson requested 1C and was approved. Not sure why?!?!?
  15. How do you come to this conclusion? Grayson's current enrollment is 455!
  16. Rising Galax senior Essence Brown recently committed to George Washington University. She chose the offer from GW over offers from Radford, UNC-Asheville, Rhode Island and Appalachian State. https://www.roanoke.com/sports/high_schools/high-schools-liberty-high-girls-basketball-coach-dunton-takes-women/article_ab982df7-2b11-5be9-b4ef-c52dc72bab99.html Galax returns everyone from a 22-5 team that reached the state semifinals last season. With what they will gain from a solid JV group, this could be a special year. They have a pair of D1 caliber players with a third currently in the 8th grade.

  19. My brother and his wife were married on September 20, 2003. As one of our wedding gifts, my wife and I took him and his soon-to-be bride to the Virginia Tech Texas A&M Thursday night football game in Blacksburg on September 18th. It just happened to coincide with the arrival of Hurricane Isabel! My brother and I also played a charity golf event the morning of the game at a nearby club. We called upon the Captain (Morgan) to help us through the day and night.
  20. The funniest thing you'll see all day!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. That would be well above the designated 10-year rain event standard. That's a lot of water in a short period of time.
  22. Speaking from experience, I wouldn't be so quick to judge the renovations that were made. The issue could (and probably is) more attributed to lack of proper maintenance than poor design or construction. Trash, leaves, and other debris clog up the inlets. This chokes off the water's ability to follow designed channels for proper removal. It's' likely (and probable) the engineers explained this in great detail while offering suggestions on how to properly maintain the area to limit this type of thing from happening. It should also be noted, these systems are generally designed to withstand 10-year rain events. Under normal circumstances, systems designed to those specifications are more than adequate. Not to turn this into a political mindf&*k but, we receive what the EPA considers "10-year weather events" every 24 months and the frequency of those events have been rising sharply since the early 1990's. As the name indicates, they are considered to be once a decade storms yet, they are now coming every 24 months. As is the case with most things of this nature, out-of-sight, out-of-mind plays a vital role. I would be willing to bet, local maintenance crews and city officials aren't adequately keeping trash and other debris from clogging up the system. I know that's a big part of the problem where I live. When the water recedes, go back and look at the inlets. My guess is, you will find a mound of trash and debris completely covering the inlets.
