  1. One axiom I shared with any team I ever coached and more importantly, with my children, is that just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it. Thanks for the information/conversation…I am heading out to the links!
  2. I guess if VHS were to partner with Hardrock Casino, they could give players room and board. Then recruit for every sport and build dynasties!
  3. Thanks for the insight. So in reality, population centers basically have free run to draw students/athletes while rural VA is very limited…unless some benefactor makes it worthwhile. NIL ruined college sports (IMHO) and this may well wreck VA high school sports. i guess I am just too old school. I liked following teams that were homegrown.
  4. Forgive me for being obtuse…I am seriously interested in this because it sounds much different than what i thought I knew. So any student can attend and play for LCA regardless of where they reside solely because LCA is a private school? But I thought public schools were still bound by jurisdictional boundaries. That’s not the case? If it’s not, I guess there is no gripe with JM. But I can’t seem to wrap my mind around a public school with no jurisdictional restrictions.
  5. I don’t have your LCA knowledge. What residency requirement do they have to attend? I know that Loudoun County and the City of Richmond allow students residing in their jurisdictions to attend any school in those jurisdictions as long as they provide their own transportation.
  6. Like it? No. Finances? No. Political? Yes! If they take action, the headline for the ESPN Outside the Lines special is already written.
  7. That’s not how it works. The clock operator watches the referee who gives the signal to start the clock. In high school games, there is always a bit of lag due to this. No replay like in college/pros for review.
  8. And the classification should be based on the enrollment of JM and Richmond Community School (if that is where the players actually attend). Nothing against the players. They are teenagers being used by adults. They are getting a private school program experience at no cost. I’d do it too if I was a teenager. The culprits are the JM/Team Loaded coaches, the school administrators, Adidas and the VHSL for lack of oversight.
  9. LCA is a private school and does not pretend otherwise. Either the students pay tuition or get scholarships; somebody is paying the bill. If you believe otherwise, I’ll trade some oceanfront property here on Massanutten Mountain for yours. Does LCA have deals with Adidas or other companies? Serious question…I don’t know the answer. Other sports at JM get little to NO support. The football team folded mid season this year. The baseball team had to borrow catchers equipment from the opposing teams. There is a problem with what JM is allowed to do.
  10. There is a helluva difference between what JM is doing and LCA. LCA is a private school and charges tuition for the privilege of going there. (Im not a fan of LCA or other private schools being allowed in the VHSL either.) JM is a public school offering a private school program for no additional cost. At a golf tournament last fall in Richmond, an area HS coach advised that some JM players actually attend Richmond Community School; the only time they set foot on JM grounds is game days and maybe practices. JM is culpable for abusing the system. How can the AAU coach also coach the same kids in HS? I coached HS baseball and was forbidden to coach the same kids in summer tourneys. The VHSL is culpable as well. They are scared of JM and that situation. Somebody might call them racist if they asked questions.
  11. My post was in response to someone saying that an earlier playoff game not involving Riverheads would decide who represented the East side of the state. It was a reminder that the 7 time state champ would have say in that matter…and now they have had the final say on that.
  12. If it was based on participation, they would probably be 3A-4a. Seems that every male from 9-12 grades suit up for them!
  13. I’d hate to be a decent offensive lineman at Riverheads with college aspirations. If two lineman are pretty close talent wise, I’d think a college coach would look harder at the guy who can/has learned pass blocking skills instead of run only.
  14. Riverheads might beat Central in the rematch but… Central is the better overall team IMHO. Lopez and Forbes are special players. Central just seems to have “it” this year. However, it is very difficult to beat a quality team twice, especially one that’s won 7 titles in a row.
  15. Virginia High School Bearcats—-first 3 were easy, 4th was tough to choose… Gene Evers—All American at Tennessee and College HOF Beattie Feathers—1st NFL RB to go over 1000 yards in a season Darryal Wilson—Tennessee WR, New England Patriots WR; Olympic Track Milton Franklin—VT RB, now Bridgewater College Chief of Police
  16. Just a bit of info from Region B… Madison returns 4 starters and had a really good JV team. Brunswick won a 2 point game against them in the State Quarters. Strasburg returns 3 starters including the big guy. They lost 3 out of 4 against Madison. The region should come down to these two again with East Rockingham a dark horse. But all this is a moot point with John Marshall standing there waiting in the State Quarters and Semis. At least a Region C or D team will be state runner up👍🏼
  17. It’s seems odd to see a post about SWVA baseball and no mention of my beloved Bearcats. Times are achangin’…
  18. Negative on that ghost rider. They only played 8 against Strasburg. Their 8 are awfully good though.
  19. John Marshall is one of the few teams that has actually lived to, or exceeded, the hype. Now that I say that, Gate City will probably upset them😁
  20. After what I saw in Rockingham County tonight, John Marshall by 25+. Anytime they wanted a basket, they went inside to 6’11 Wheeler. He is pretty much unstoppable. Can’t imagine that will change Thursday.
  21. Some refs just can’t make a call at critical times. I’ve seen a handful of baseball umps who have no trouble calling strike 1 & 2 but will only call strike 3 on a swing and miss.
  22. Wish I could say but I have not seen Radford or Gate City this year. East Rock runs through Nickel. He is 6’7, handles the ball well, has good range and gets to the rim pretty much at will (so far). McNair controls their game as the PG. Very quick and physical. More of a drive and dish player than a jump shooter. Great defensive player. Evick (6’6) sometimes starts but often comes off the bench. His range is really good and apparently has the green light from anywhere. He’s a tough match up on offense but a liability on defense. The supporting cast seems to know their role. They go 8-9 deep. Upsetting JM will be a TALL order but I don’t think it is outside the realm of possibility. JM could also win by 20-25 so who knows? Just from what I read on here and other forums, sounds like Gate City would be the better match up against East Rock.
