Graham rolls in quad match at home opener

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The walls of the Graham High School gymnasium have housed hundreds of wrestling matches over the decades. On Tuesday evening, a couple of new prep programs took the mats in the venerable gym for the first time.

With the stands nearly full, Graham hosted Bluefield, PikeView and Fort Chiswell for its first home match of the season, and swept through the field by a combined point total of 209-38.

The quad match began with the host G-Men taking the measure of PikeView, currently in their first season of competition and fielding five wrestlers. Graham’s Casey Barreras and Mike Garland each pinned their counterparts less than a minute into the action.

Meanwhile, Bluefield took on Fort Chiswell on the other mat. The Beavers went all-out from the drop of the ref’s hand, and beat the Pioneers 42-36, followed by a shutout of PikeView.

The Beavers’ Stephen Wessels and Zach Hunt of the Pioneers went head-to-head for 58 long seconds before either touched a knee to the mat. Wessels prevailed with a strong leg-drive that produced a pin with 33 seconds left in the first period.

Graham and Bluefield began round two with the G-Men’s Barreras and Garland taking the two heavyweight encounters by pins in the first round. Bluefield’s Brandon Neal and Heath Browning were spirited competitors in the 103-pound event, with Neal finally taking the pin with 32.9 seconds left in their second period.

Ten G-Men went 3-0 Tuesday, and Jake Lilly also was 3-0 for Bluefield.

Graham travels to Richlands’ Big Blue Classic meet, a 10-team dual match on Saturday.
