Region D made an impressive showing at the 2A State Tournament in Salem this weekend.  Region D accounted for six State Champions and twelve Top Six Place Winners  The Mountain 7 had a State Champion at 145 lbs. Jonah Phillips of Wise Central and four Top Six Place Winners.  The Southwest District had five State Champions:  152 lbs. Justin Fritz of Graham, 160 lbs. Jacob Puckett of Richlands, 170 lbs. Gage Richard of VA High, 182 lbs. Logan Smith of Lebanon, and 195 lbs. Luke Martin of Richlands.  The Southwest District also had eight Top Six Place Winners.  Great showing for the wrestlers of Southwest Virginia and Grundy added another State Title at 1A to complete the weekend.

This was Justin Fritz's third straight State Championship.  He was State Champion at 132 lbs. in 2018 and 145 lbs. in 2019. I believe he is the only three time State Champion in Tazewell County Wrestling history.  Please let me know if there are any others.  Dylan Cook had back to back State Championships at 195 lbs. in 2014 & 2015.  The other four Graham State Champions each had one State Championship.

To go along with his three State Championships Justin also has three Region D Championships.  His record for the 2019-2020 season was 51-1.  His career record is 141-13.

Yes, Consolidation is coming for the State Tournaments.  It is supposed to happen for the 2021-2022 season.  1A & 2A will be together for the State Tournament.  3A & 4A will be together as well as 5A & 6A.  Three State Tournaments instead of six.  A combined 1A/2A Region D will have 20 + teams and will have tough competition for a wrestler to qualify for the State Tournament.

Another change rumored to be coming for the 2020-2021 season concerns the number and types of events allowed.  The season will have 16 dates:  4 tournaments maximum and the other 12 dates consisting of Tris and Duals.  This is a throw back to the 80's & 90's type of schedules.  If this happens a lot of the tournaments will disappear as teams pick and choose which ones to go to.  Most teams now compete in 5 to 7 tournament during the season. Teams with low numbers of wrestlers will be traveling during the week for some pretty short matches.  The overall numbers of matches that a wrestler can compete in will also go down.

The topics of the new scheduling plan and the consolidation were talked about by area wrestling coaches pretty much all season.  The consolidation was in the rumor mill last season as well.  The VHSL reason that 1A & 2A only have three state qualifiers per region has to do with the number of 1A & 2A schools that have wrestling state wide. Not enough to justify using a 16 man bracket.    All the other A's have 4 qualifiers per region.  Originally the VHSL wanted only 2 qualifiers per region for an 8 man bracket 1A & 2A state tournaments.  The Principals &  AD's wouldn't go for that, so it was raised to 12.

A dual between Graham and Tazewell would consist of 2 or 3 actual matches and the rest forfeits. How much gate money will this bring in?😂

Yeh I think the limited number of tournaments will hurt small Schools.   To many forfeits  for dual matches

Yea 8 man brackets is not enough. Some regions weights are just alot stronger than others. The Satterfield kid from union at #160 was 3rd at regions and placed 3rd at States. Under the 8 man rule he would have stayed home for states.

If they combine 1-2A for wrestling, then basically that is what we will have anyway. Regions 1D and 2D will be tough to get out of if they are only taking top 4 for a 16 man bracket.

Grundy, Rural Retreat, Lebanon, Richlands, and John Battle were the top teams in the 2 regions. Reminds me of the last few years of the old region 4, before Grundy dropped to 1A, when we had Grundy along with all of the Roanoke, Martinsville, and New River Valley schools all in one region.

There was a lot of discussion about what to do as far as Districts & Regions with combined 1A/2A format.  Two ways of doing it were talked about.

#1:  Each Region have District Tournaments for Regional Seeding, then an All-In Regional with 1A & 2A wrestlers.  Top 4 from each Region to the State/16 Man Bracket

#2:  Use Half State Format. Each Region use Districts Date for All-In Sub-Regional.  Top 8 from Sub-Regionals advance to Half State.  A & B together & C & D together.

Half State will use 16 Man Bracket as 8 advance from each Sub-Regional.  Top 8 from East & West Half States advance to State using 16 Man Bracket

This format was used for a few years when the VHSL used Half States and worked very well with 6 from each Half State advancing to State Tournament.  1A still uses this format.

When 2A used it, we advanced only 4 from half state to an 8 man bracket at the state tournament. 2A region/half state has been very difficult to advance out of so far in the 6A system.

3a and up is already doing the 16man brackets. 1a and 2a are doing the 12 man brackets. WHEN and if they combine it will go from 6 to 4 classifications par some VHSL dude that came asking us in that long ass line to get in to the finals and the guy beside me brought it up. He said thats what they are looking at (4 Classes). He also said it be 2022 before it would take place. So we wait and see.

Idk how they are gonna do it. I think 1a and 2a should be combined but I don't know how to do the qualifications to make it fair. The whole east vs west wouldn't be fair because the west won the majority of the individual championships. I think the west won 19 weight classes to 9 from the east in 1a, 2a combined.
