When I worked for the Salem Sox while at VT, I wore a Richlands hat often. Once had a guy who looked to be in his 50s ask me if my hat was regulation length. I told him it happened 24 years ago and offered directions to the nearest Lowe’s so he could get supplies to build a bridge and get over it. He told me he hoped I crashed my car.

Not a fan at all of Salem fans.

You could have asked him if he actually lived within the Salem attendance zone.  Because a significant number of players on that particular team did not.  Arguably a bigger potential impact than 1/8" of plastic.

I've never heard one Salem fan even mention Richland's much less care about what happened years ago...I'm sure those 500 state titles they have won since then made them forget what happened that day

That game occurred during my senior year at Tech.  As chance would have it, my roommate was a Salem alumnus.  He was pretty cool about it -- even though I gave him a pretty good ration of smack from the time the game ended until the cleat issue surfaced.

BTW, although my roommate attended Salem he never lived within the attendance zone.  Their recruitment efforts were both a poorly kept secret around the Roanoke area and also a source of frustration when they would lose in the playoffs in the late 80s/early 90s.

I encounter Salem fans everyday.

I ask them about the cleats. Most of them shrug their shoulders and say oh well.

Parry McCluer? Those people are rude.

Agree about the recruiting down there...but y'all did your fair share also didn't you?

And now it's other teams in the Roanoke valley area that do all the recruiting...I don't think Salem does much anymore...they don't need too

Recruiting wasn't a concept in Richlands back in 1992.  And at that time we were just two years removed from one of the worst decades in the history of the program (in terms of winning percentage).  Hard to imagine enticing any recruits to come even if Vaught would have considered it.  From 2000 forward.... strong evidence to the contrary.

Salem still probably gets most of the area football players it wants.  Areas that have multiple school systems and private schools in adjacent proximity to one another tend to spawn situations of horse trading -- which is an issue worth the VHSL's attention.

My personal opinion is that whenever a public school -- and I mean ANY public school -- is consistently dominant in a program or sport over a period beyond one generation of enrolled students (roughly 4 to 8 years), then there is probably something fishy going on.

Imagine living in an area where pay raises or job offers hinge on whether or not you played high school football 20-30 years ago. A police force that, for a town of 6,000, rules the city with an iron fist. Taxes that are higher than anywhere else in the area due to a freaking crappy golf course being agreed upon by a council and not a vote by the citizens. A town that once had thriving industry that up and left for Mexico leaving a town filled with meth and old people reminiscing about the "good ol days" constantly.

Well, there you have Buena Vista lol. And what cracks me up is when I go back there everyone talks about how "rude" northerners are, northerners being NoVa since thats where I'm at.. and I sit and shake my head in amazement.

To be fair though, I always thought Craig County had some mouthy ones too. I know I had a run in with a reporter (I think he may have worked for the local paper, not sure) from CC one year. I used to hate Covington until I befriended people from over that way and my whole outlook changed with them. I miss AlCo sometimes.

I cant speak for the year 2020, but I do know Amherst used to be awful. Watched them in a playoff game vs. Glass back in 1998 they openly cheered an injury to one of Hilltopper players ("Get up, boy"). Of course a few weeks later Hampton ripped them to shreds and undoubtedly out-unclassed them lol.

They were still pretty mouthy when I watched them vs. William Byrd in '07ish. I remember some of their fans standing at the entrace gate heckling Terrier fans as they came in, asking them why they wasted their money coming over there etc.

The folks from Buena Vista and their average level of disdain for the athletics at Narrows are impressive, if you want to consider things like that impressive.

Not quite as impressive as the idiots that do the radio play-by-play for Narrows games. Wow, talk about inbred. Personally, I have nothing against Narrows in any way shape or form, but your radio guys are jokes. lol

Perhaps it's different circles.  If you ask a lifelong Salem fan who's in the 44-48 age range, you'll get an earful.  I've tested this enough to publish this in a peer-reviewed journal.

Ive met numerous Salem fans in the 40-50 year old range that when you mention Richlands they just say "yeah everyone knows they had illegal cleats" but just laugh it off...saying "yeah we have done pretty good since then"

I can't say anything about Covington fans, but in 2014 their players and coaches at the time left a lot to be desired...

I talked to a nice couple on the way out, told them the best way to get back to 19 regardless of what the GPS told them, but there were many others who were pretty terrible. Only time I legitimately thought I was going to get into a fight after a game.

Who knows, maybe I've gotten used to the stench of Pioneer District football.

Mediocre football, angry fans.

I can tell you, there is a story about a game between Natural Bridge and Parry McCluer from back in the early 60's where PM lost the game. The fans chased the officials into the gym at PM. And then, after being escorted out by the cops, the mob flipped over a police car with the refs inside. This story is legit because I've read about it in the old papers.

These 2020 antifa posers have nothing on old school BV!

Lol, considering they got away with robbery vs. Amherst in '05 it may be time for the ones who still complain about a game they lost by 10 to shut up. What ever happened to Dennis Vaught? I know he went to a school down in Tidewater to coach, got fired for using the N word and then apparently has never been heard of again?

He didn't go to a school in the Tidewater area. He was at Patrick Henry in Roanoke in 1989. They played a game vs Homer Ferguson at Todd Stadium in Newport News. At Halftime he yelled at his team because they were losing. He was reported to have said, "Are you gonna let a bunch of N beat you?". He was fired. But Richlands hired him a year later.

Wasn't he at Lexington HS at one point also? Maybe I'm thinking of someone else
