There's been a few studies that show going for it on 4th & 1 is a good bet to succeed. One Yale study said it had about a 2/3rds success rate. On a QB sneak, it was near 83%. https://sports.sites.yale.edu/success-short-yardage-play-types-fourth-down Irishman

Bottom line a game that close and tight and your defense is performing well, make them drive the field. I would say the exact same thing if we had done that. In fact I have said that over the past few years when we went for it on 4th down on just simply our side of the

To be even in a discussion with a favorable comparison to such legends as Jim Nelson and Larry Hypes is touching and humbling. It was just my 14th game behind the mic, and I’m always looking and working to get better. Constructive criticism always appreciated! I’m thankful for all the listeners in Bulldog Nation and from all around SWVA for tuning in today. It’ll be one I remember when I’m old and have trouble remembering my kids’ names. And I’m sorry for blowing a few ear drums. My right ear is still ringing, 90 minutes after taking the headset off. Awesome job. You 2 did a great job. I was just as excited!! Real Sasquatch 1,865 Report Share Posted March 13, 2021 I recall Graham's coach Williams going for it on 4th and 1 from his own 14 against Union a few years back and not making it. I think that was Grahams first possession in that game. Baffling Irishman

I was sure he was trying to draw the Bulldogs offsides. I know he has a history of gambling and going on 4th, but that was a huge gamble. Oh well, worked out in the Dogs favor, so not complaining. So glad for Josiah Jordan, Chance Harris, Gavin Nunley, Josh Herndon, Tanner Wimmer, Jayden Taylor and the other seniors. Jordan and Harris both missed this game last year due to injury. The injury bug has hit the dogs hard, really for the past 2 seasons. Im glad they got to play and prove that they could get this win. Couldn't be happier for such a great group of kids. They are truly good kids on and off of the field. Very humble and respectful. Every one of them. Irishman and Deleted Account 1

If I can make a Graham lifer excited for Tazewell football, it’s certainly a job well done! I’m out of “thanks” emojis for the day, so I’ll thank you again right here. I’ve said before if I had it to over again, I would have started down this path much sooner! It’s that the decision removes every sense of risk-reward calculation. The mental hurdle of Tazewell being unable to score on Richlands was very large and very real. Failure there guarantees that you surrender points and forfeit that mental edge. The risk was far and away not worth the reward. And in a game like that, points mattered in a game-altering way. I believe more coaches should go for it on fourth down, especially short yardage, IF you're not on your own 12. It's defensible on your own 30, not your ten. In that study, how many attempts were there on your own 12 in the first half? JDHoss

That's exactly my point as well. The issue wasn't going for it on fourth down, it was going for it backed up at your own 12 in the second quarter of a low scroing, defensive game, basically giving away three points if you don't get it and in a game this close and low scoring, three points could be the difference and it was. Well I guess you could say it was more of a "send off" before the game. After the game the players walked down main street. Police escort, fire trucks, ambulances, etc. Lots of community support. You make it, you have a fresh set of downs inside your own 20. If you don't make it, you're probably going to give up points. You NEVER go for it from your own 12 unless it's really, really late, you're trailing, and you're out of timeouts or down to your last timeout.
