Imagine the following example IF it were true..and it's not true, but I'm just giving a similar scenario below.. Tazewell County, VA is named "Graham County." The town of Bluefield, VA, is still named Bluefield, VA, but it's the county seat of Graham County, and you have a High School in Bluefield, VA, named Graham High School (which it is of course). The folks in Bluefield, VA, would more than likely say they are from "Graham." This is the situation with Pearisburg/Giles and what leads locals in Pearisburg to identify with "Giles" as where they are from, BUT....i can tell you from living a couple months in the winter in Myrtle Beach that when I run into people from Pearisburg over the years, they say, Pearisburg, VA, so locally "Giles" is used, but when someone from Pearisburg leaves the area, they say Pearisburg in my experience. SWVAgridiron 1,469 Author Report Share Posted September 8, 2022 We moved from Pulaski to Pearisburg when I was 6. Lived in Pearisburg until I was 25 and have lived in Narrows the last 3 years. Wanted to buy a house in Pearisburg but ended up finding my dream house in Narrows so I guess I’m stuck here for awhile. However, it only took Uncle Percy a couple of minutes to come up with a new name and nickname. New River High Muskellunges or better known as “Muskies”. (One mean ar$e fish). Took a little longer on the colors. Can’t use Giles’ Powell Valley look alike colors or Narrows’ mini Packers colors. Uncle Percy decided on Black and Orange colors.
