Week 6: Richlands @ Ridgeview

If anything I would like to see RV use motion more to pull the D out of coverages and generally make it tougher to set up a game plan.

Having a good run game is something that they did not have last season and I love that it is another tool in the toolbox.

RV doesn't get the ball to Counts enough either, he is a mismatch against most defenders.   Beavers touches the ball 10% of the time....but RV has never really featured him.  Not sure why.  I think this year the run game is much better so they should run the ball more.  If they run into a defense that can shut that down they have a pretty good passing game to fall back on.  I'd like to see more intermediate passes mixed in but they do mix it up pretty well.

The intermediate passing game is where they will light teams up.  A good screen game and some short stuff across the middle.
Once the turnovers come down, they will be very hard to defeat.

The Wolfpack is the most balanced team in the district.  Most teams see Beavers and Hill and are scared of the pass and not worrying on Hartsock or Profit on the ground.  Soon teams are going to have to play honest and account for the run.  Then they take the top off of a opponents defense.

The tell of the tale for Ridgeview is......can they stop the run against a Union/GC/Abingdon/Bluefield? How well will their defensive line do against the tough opponents. We've talked at length about RVs offense...spreading the ball, giving Beavers more touches, RVs run game, short pass, long pass, etc. RVs offense is FINE. They are effective enough to win a state title on Offense, or at least go deep in the playoffs on Offense. If you have any doubts or worry or unanswered questions about RV, then worry about their defensive line. If the defensive line question is answered and it turns out they can soundly stop or limit the run, and they can get pressure on opposing team passing QBs, then it puts RV in the seat most thought they would be in after last season coming into this year. That seat is....a team good enough to possibly go the distance to Salem. Its ALL about RVs defensive line to me, not the offense. Only my opinions here. Offense is fun, emotional, and exciting to talk about, but RV will go as far as their defensive line allows them to.

I think the Dline has moved down the list of concerns for the Pack.  They replaced an opening day starter with another DT and that looks like a good move.  They are starting a Fr at DE and he has the look and frame (6’3”, 255lb)  of a future star.  He is improving each game but Union will test him.  The Lester kid (DT/DE) is strong as an ox and won’t back down from anyone. #50 is a big body that is plugging holes…..but they don’t have good depth.  The LB corp is very capable and as good as any in 2D when they play motivated.  Now….my concern for the Pack.  Safeties.  Virtually all of Central’s offense came at the expense of the safeties. At some points, I’ve seen them 4 yards off the ball.  They are overplaying run support and often are too aggressive and o er pursue their lanes.  In my opinion, safety play is now Ridgeview’s #1 defensive issue.  That can be expanded to the CB’s not being aggressive in run support and holding the edge and struggling to get off blocks.

On the year so far

Burton is Averaging 190 yards on the ground Ridgeview Held them to -15

Grundy is Averaging 289 RV held them to 153

Central is Averaging 241 RV held them to 194\

Lee is Averaging 159 RV Held them to 123

From what I have seen so far this season RV does play the run tough but tend to give up one or 2 big runs(Plays) per game.

Agreed.  The Central and Lee totals are bloated by two busts.  Both times RV was caught with no one close to S depth.  RV tends to bust one or two major coverages a game….. been lucky that no one has connected.  Still think the should switch #7 and #32 around.  They seem better suited for the other’s position.

Those are all playoff teams. Lower seeds for sure but playoff teams.  I thought the defense against Centrwl was really good other than the long run, and that happens from time to time.

Richlands moved the ball against Bluefield, but couldn’t get in the end zone until late. The majority of the yards and touches were courtesy of Dylan Brown. I haven’t seen big play ability since Gate City. There are some talented players in the lineup, but I haven’t seen evidence of being able to “take it to the house” when given the opportunity. Hopefully, the younger players learn to respond to adversity this season and improve for the future.

SWVASB has this at -27.5 spread for the Wolfpack. I think that’s about right. I do think the Blues making a change at QB was long overdue, Brown is touching the ball each play now and you have that other back on the field for most plays now as well. I still look for a big Ridgeview win but I think Richlands is moving in the right direction as they get into the “softer” part of their schedule (Tazewell, Marion, Crockett and Virginia, if things break right Richlands could close 2-2 or 3-1).

Ridgeview 48

Richlands 20

Yep, she posted about a 4000 word diatribe.  Getting close to rock bottom I’m afraid.

Whoaaa….dang.  Dirty laundry aired?  Had to be a reason they switched to Brown.  Can some of the Richlands peeps shed light on this?  How was the QB’s performance?

If you go by the QB’s mom’s Facebook, there will have to be a change since it seems he has left the team.

Maybe the team doesn’t need someone who isn’t willing to stick out the 2nd half of the season??? I admittedly know zip about the team dynamics or Simmons’ abilities but quitting on your brothers is a bad look. Mom sounds like one of THOSE sports’ parents , lol!

Yeah…I was thinking the same thing. Kid could have asked “Where do you need me Coach?”  Many a kid has switched positions and thrived.  Not everyone can be the pitcher, SS or QB.

No, no, no! This is just like travel ball, if you don't get what you want you just pack up and leave. Never mind the values of dedication, loyalty, working hard to improve ones self, sacrifice for the greater good. No, none of that matters.

Also if you go by Facebook, some of their fans are sick and tired of playing 2A ball and want to drop down... Lol

This mindset is likely one of the main reasons for the decline in long-term coaching careers. It seems that many of the area schools change coaches almost every other year. The demands of coaching now require dealing with the effects of changing values and prioritization of those values. Among these, expectations of instant gratification in the form of “win now”, despite the culture of “me first” over team. I, imagine, resignations to spend time with family, indeed the right decision, is because the requirement to spend more time year-round to win, without long-term appreciation and support for teaching valuable lessons. Instead, it’s “do what I want, so that I can be a star and get a scholarship.” This isn’t meant as an indictment on any individual, but how our society is becoming as a whole. Coaches are often the means to and end, nowadays. I was very fortunate to have played in an era where the values were more predicated on hard work and teamwork. I can point to the application of those values in my life every day. I can really appreciate those who continue to Coach for the right reason, despite more effort for fewer rewards.

It is a primary reason I no longer coach at any level.  I love teaching the game(s) to kids so I continue to work with the occasional kid or two on the side.  I had a run in with a parent immediately after a tough lose, a grandmother who was only worried about her grandson not getting to play at the end of the game.  It was a devastating lose and I escorted her out of the area and told her I would be happy to speak with her but it would be on my terms and not in front of the kids or her grandson, who was incredibly embarrassed.  Most parents don’t invest in the training or skill building for their kids and expect coaches to turn Jimmy and Joey into All Stars.  Youth sports has become toxic…..has been a while now.  I hate to see this situation.  A young kid, who by all accounts loves football, gave up half of his Jr season and probably will have to look elsewhere to play next year.  I hope his parents didn’t force that or drive that decision.
