Skill, speed and body type should trump wants and wishes and dreams for positional choice. It is the honest parent that can clearly see their child’s best path for success and guide them to it. This is a great example of learning to put the needs of the group over the desires of the individual. Not unlike a good father, leader, employee, and in this case teammate. tornado99 345 Report Share Posted September 29, 2022 1 hour ago, SwvaOG said: It is a primary reason I no longer coach at any level. I love teaching the game(s) to kids so I continue to work with the occasional kid or two on the side. I had a run in with a parent immediately after a tough lose, a grandmother who was only worried about her grandson not getting to play at the end of the game. It was a devastating lose and I escorted her out of the area and told her I would be happy to speak with her but it would be on my terms and not in front of the kids or her grandson, who was incredibly embarrassed. Most parents don’t invest in the training or skill building for their kids and expect coaches to turn Jimmy and Joey into All Stars. Youth sports has become toxic…..has been a while now. I hate to see this situation. A young kid, who by all accounts loves football, gave up half of his Jr season and probably will have to look elsewhere to play next year. I hope his parents didn’t force that or drive that decision. Thanks for your service to the youth in your community. It’s sad that the few good ones are often overshadowed by the louder, if not more numerous, voices of the problems. SwvaOG
Gridiron60 2,550 Report Share Posted September 29, 2022 Richlands is a hot mess right now with a group calling for McGee, Vencil, & Tarter to go. Seems like a select core group stirring the pot & getting others in an uproar to take up the cross with them so to speak. Kid wasn’t playing the entire game anymore & coaches trying some different stuff. Mommy got mad (egged on by some former coaches , hearsay) & kid quit and possibly transferring to Lebanon. I’m not sure why anyone would want to coach in that end of the county these days with all that drama. Tarter is a much better person & dedicated person to tough it out for those boys than most would be. I’m not aware of as many details, but this is a vicious cycle which creates a volatile environment. Losing exacerbates the problem, creating the blame game, and the rats jumping ship. Only a special group of dedicated, reasonable people can change the course. It takes passion, tempered by reason. If a talented group of kids and parents can stick together, hopefully the cycle is reversed. It’s ok and admirable if a group is able to align both self-interest and the good of the group. I assume that’s what happened at Graham. Again, I can only speculate the details about today. In my own experience, I can’t claim a state championship, nor individual accolades. I can, however, point to a pattern of hard work and parallel growth that was learned from Greg Mance, Dennis Palmer, Ronnie Davis, Jeff Tarter, and Terry Wess among many others. I only hope the issues are corrected for my kids to learn the same lessons. SwvaOG and Gridiron60

You are one wrong move coaching wise to being in a dark place for a long time, just ask your friends from Gate City! Before you run someone off please consider the consequences! Look at those 4 coaches in 4 years. Takes years to recover from that environment and stopping the kids from going elsewhere as well.

That kid did ask multiple times to be switched to a different position after Richlands many failed attempts at recruiting. He did just fine in the 7v7s. And totall accurate I am that mom. I’ll advocate 100% for my kid. You all are looking from the stands you don’t know the way those kids are bullied and treated on that team. But that’s not a conversation you are willing to have. Actually this is completely inaccurate and I’m sure it’s come from the select few that run things at Richlands. He was never groomed to be a QB, he was put in that position by coaches. He then was tore down by those same coaches. He asked multiple times to watch film with the OC or the head coach, neither would ever do that one on one. He was told by the head coach that he was going to work with him one on one back in the spring. He never did. He spent 6-8 hours at the field house most days in the summer and came for them trying to recruit on Sundays. Then they didn’t commit to actually keeping him in as QB for any consecutive games. Kalib asked them to move him to a different position at least 3 different times bc he loves the game. Let’s not even touch all the Daddyball. I’m tired of grown men bullying children. It’s freaking high school football not the NFL, they know about these boards and read the crap that’s posted.

tornado99 345 Report Share Posted September 30, 2022 Not knowing, speculating, or even having a particular dog in the fight, my opinion based on observations in recent years is that the pendulum with the culture as a whole seems to have swung toward the individuals from the team aspect, likely along with the growth of various travel ball sports. That said one of the challenges of coaching that is more complicated than parenting, speaking from limited experience in both roles is advocating for everyone else’s children and not just your own. Sometimes time spent with one child means not spending time or attention with another. Coaches must bear a great deal of responsibility to make reasonable decisions, rather than emotional ones that we parents have to make. In my experience, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle between opposite perspectives. old_school_blue
SwvaOG 600 Author Report Share Posted September 30, 2022 Well, if you're going to hang out here you need to understand a few things: Union folk are never happy. Giles is experiencing a civil war. Tazewell somehow has become overrated. Graham is Graham Ridgeview will only go as far as their Dline will take them. We can't figure out Gate City Lee is on the upswing. Eastside is on the downswing. We're not sure about Burton. The whole damn board dislikes Central. We have our own internal drama, so you may not go directly to the front of the line. Enjoy. mv91, Union_Fan, stu_bean and 11 others 1

Mountain Football 1,532 Report Share Posted September 30, 2022 Let's not forget that Tarter stepped up when Coach Happy Feet hauled a@! out of town. Contrary to what the Blue Neck Nation wants to believe Richlands wasn't overloaded with talent when he took the job but he took it anyway. With that said one of the individuals mentioned above in an earlier post is nothing more than an arrogant sawed off piss complected puddle of puke that deserves every single bit of pissed off mom rage that comes his way.
