2A VHSL Volleyball tournament

Although volleyball doesn't get much attention in the area, it should.  There have been several teams over the past several years that have advanced deep into the VHSL 2A tournament (Gate City, Central and Ridgeview).  This year Ridgeview sits as the #2 team in the state and Central has been in the Top 10 most of the year.  

The tournament started tonight with the Top 4 M7 teams seeded against the Top 4 SWD Teams.

#1 Ridgeview vs #4 Richlands

#2 Virginia High vs #3 John Battle

 

#2 Wise Central vs #3 Lebanon

#1 Marion vs #4 Gate City

Marion def Gate City 25-23, 28-26 and 25-23 

Central def Lebanon 25-5, 25-25, and 25-17

Volleyball this year is the weakest as a collection I have seen it in a long time.  There are some very good teams (Abingdon, Ridgeview, Central) but for the most part a lot of average to not very good teams in the area compared to the top teams typically.

First Round:

#1 RV over #8 Richlands 

#3 John Battle over #2 Virginia High

#1 Marion over #4 Gate City

#2 Central over #3 Lebanon

 Second Round:

#1 RV over #3 John Battle

#1 Marion over #2 Central

Region Championship (Tonight at RV at 6pm)

#1 Marion at #1 Ridgeview

 

I think it was good that the region had a bit more parity at the top this year.  Gate City has dominated for a long time.  But, 1inStripes is correct in that there seemed to a huge gap between the top schools and even the middle schools, much less the bottom.  You shouldn't see too many 25-3 games at the high school level with same sized schools.

Ridgeview (#1 Region D) defeated Marion (#2 Region D), 3-1 last Tuesday to win the Region D championship and both teams qualified for the 8 team state tournament.

On Saturday night Ridgeview hosted and defeated Radford (#2 Region C), 3-0 and James River (#1 Region C) defeated Marion, 3-1.

Ridgeview travels to James River and will play Tuesday in the State Semi-finals.

Ridgeview Lady Wolfpack punched ticket to 2A State Finals with a 4 set win over James River.  Finals will be Saturday in Salem.

Wished this had an earlier start time on Saturday.  Would have liked to have made this but will be at Duke Saturday as well.  Doubt I could make this and get to Durham in time for kickoff also.

Wishing the Lady Wolfpack much luck and hoping they can bring back the championship on Saturday!
