She's more worried about cuts to Medicaid, but even so, when there is a buyout, there are often job cuts. A couple of years ago, the company my daughter worked for was bought out, and her job was cut. Fortunately, the following morning, one of her former employer's competitors called and offered her a job, with an $8K a year pay increase. Quote

Wise Counties population is quickly aging with younger people moving due to lack of job opportunities. You want to be really depressed, drive through Dickenson or Buchannan Counties, theres not a lot going on. Seems like half of the homes are empty The future is bleak. I've sat on several economic development boards/meetings over the years. Good intentions....not the best results. A significant portion of the area's graduates simply aren't prepared to enter the workforce and, boy, have I seen it first hand. They are channeled into the same ol same old industries.....health care and mining/aggregate support. There is no concerted effort to establish a remote/telework presence for the region and not enough creativity in bringing jobs to the region. The fixation of trying to lure a manufacturing company that will bring 200-350 jobs is blinding them. SWVA can't compete with the rest of the US, much less the world. They need to focus on micro-employment opportunities....building up existing small businesses and incubating additional small businesses. VCEDA does well in that regard. But there is a missed opportunity in not seeking out remote/telework positions. I'd also like to see the state push to permanently house some of those telework positions in SWVA.....protected when contracts are turned over. If you want a state contract you will be required to employ people in SWVA. It wouldn't be hard to do and wouldn't be a tax burden. If the state fully legalizes pot, it would be nice to see a state funded/supported effort to bring some of that farming to SWVA. I've often wondered why a meat packing facility wouldn't work in SWVA....and, of course, take every new prison/correctional facility you can get. The region as a whole played the mining card about 25-30 years too long and now they are playing catch up. JDHoss, cityofRaven, redtiger and 3 others 5 1 Quote

Smyth county has a "Fall Break" that Friday they will not be in school so I guess they moved both games up for better gates Quote
KW23 Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 Great thanks for info. I also saw holston plays rural retreat on Thursday Oct 30th guess they wanted to trick or treat on Friday lol Quote
VHSLhelper Posted August 21 Report Posted August 21 I've already seen a handful of 10/30 games announced. Union's 'Fall Break' was why the Ridgeview game was moved to Thursday. McChesney AND Union's HC are the next weekend. Quote
