Oopsie Posted March 9 Report Posted March 9 Unions softball will remain mediocre until we get a coaching change ! Shows no interest in the youth programs. Only there for the supplement ! Quote

The rich get richer with her addition to the Falcons team. Rife had a huge day yesterday at Alice Lloyd. The issue at Richlands will be will it be drama free or not. Good amount of talent. A whole lot of personalities too. So Gillenwater transferred to Abingdon? U seem to know a lot about Richlands. U from here? I don't foresee any drama this year. But anything can happen with any team I guess Awesome to hear about Rife. Shes a competitor. I heard Ben Hale had a good day as well at King. Quote
1inStripes Posted March 9 Report Posted March 9 No not from Richlands. Just spent a lot of time around a lot of those folks over the years, both quite a few who graduated last year and those who will take a bigger role this year and fill spots due to graduation. Marion not only lost Preston but last year had some key young players transfer to Chilhowie. It should be Richlands, Lebanon and then everyone else in the SWD I would think this year. Quote

Yeh i was thinking same thing about our own district. I know central will be tough again. We beat them in first game of season last year. Was a good game. I know mountain 7 teams went further but was looking at scores when they played southwest teams and was very surprised. Battle barely got by an average tazewell team. Took Central extra innings to beat Lebanon. Yet we lost to Lee twice in a row but beat them in the first one. I think Richlands underachieved last year. I dont think we'll be as strong this year. We lose a couple big bats and a great pitcher. I know Fuller can carry the load on defense like Osborne did a few years back. But will be difficult shes still young. But has been working her butt off. I think its possible to win the region with some luck. But it will be tough. Quote
Smitty Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 Richlands will not have a JV softball team this year. Had over 20 try out. The result being several girls quitting and taking up a new spring sport, all eighth graders are playing middle school and a 15 player Varisty roster. This should answer any questions about drama. 1inStripes Posted March 11 Report Posted March 11 2D was so tight at the top last year with about 5 teams who could have won it. I watched the Central/Lebanon game. Lebanon should have won but wasn’t very aggressive on the bases which cost them on at least 3 innings of putting the winning run on the board. Lee and Central had the best offensive lineups IMO. Richlands had the best combo and was a little more top heavy on O. Battle was really solid as well but had some injuries if I remember correctly. Marion could beat anyone with Preston on the mound. Softball as a whole is tough in the area. Probably the top 3 teams in the state in 1A were in region D last year. You could possibly argue Buffalo Gap could be 3rd and PH 4th but it’s a coin toss. Stelley Posted March 14 Author Report Posted March 14 Anyone heard how the eastside and v high scrimmage went? Quote

Still should be a fun year and excited to see how it goes Quote
1inStripes Posted March 15 Report Posted March 15 Graham may be the surprise team in the SWD this year in softball as well. Seen quite a few of those kids this summer as well. Believe they have some added pitching as well. Quote

Not sure who they've picked up. But i looked for them t be better than last year depending on their pitching Quote

1inStripes Posted March 16 Report Posted March 16 I think Stelley is referring to baseball instead of softball. How did things go in Tazewell yesterday at their annual softball jamboree? Quote

How did things go in Tazewell yesterday at their annual softball jamboree? Went well. U could tell the teams were a little rusty. Wise put up a goose egg against rural retreat but was their first game. We beat rural retreat 6-0 in our last game. But central got their offense going the next 2 games scoring a total of 19 runs. So i dont doubt their offense will be tough again. Richlands defense should be solid. Offense should be pretty good. Just gotta hit when it matters Tazewell looked really young. Carroll county looked decent on offense. Holston had a pitcher that could throw a little heat but struggled with control. Not by much though. Eastside didnt put up very many runs. but they should be tough again with sartin still commanding the rubber. So not a bad little scrimmage to shake off some rust Quote

Westisthebest Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 Richlands offense (softball) is definitely starting off slow. Even though we've faced some pretty good pitching. As a team they're just not hitting well right now. Have all sophomores starting so they're young. I think in a couple games theyll get there. They sit at 1-2 right now losing to Eastside, Wise and beating Union. Then they have TN high monday. Then things should get a little easier, at least for a week. But I love the competition. I love our girls seeing some of the best pitching in our region. Will only help them. Defense is playing pretty solid, just gotta get the bats going, and i believe they will. Quote

They’ll get it figured out eventually. And I agree with the competition. It will only help in the long run. Quote

Stelley Posted March 23 Author Report Posted March 23 Richlands Baseball seems to be reeling after losing their seniors from last year. 7-5 against Castlewood isn’t a good look. Quote
Pioneer Posted March 23 Report Posted March 23 Virginia High 2 John Battle 1 Big win for the Bearcats! Quote

I don't really follow the boys. But losing Hale was obviously hard to replace. I figured they'd be quite down. But I am a little surprised with the girls. I knew they wouldn't be as good as last year with the youth and losing rife. But to be fair the 2 losses we have are very good teams. One probably a definite to be in the 1A championship. But the union game surprised me more. Started off good. Got up 6 to 1 on them but they about came back and barely beat them 6-4. Still very early though Quote
