Stadium #8

Unknown year

Hints:

-Defunct school and stadium

-Last hosted a game in 2010

-Also served as home field for a local college

-Sadly, this jewel was razed and replaced with a far worse facility

JJK. Yet to see a game at central but obviously this was far better.

How are you guys uploading images.  I'm technology impaired.

My low-tech workaround

I upload the picture to IMG flip as if I were making a meme. I then click "create meme"  and copy and paste it into the message box on this site. For some reason it doesn't reject it because of file size

I'll do one more for tonight.

This one's tricky.

Stadium #10

You likely wouldn't recognize the stadium or the school by looking at the picture

Hints:

-Last hosted a game in 1986

-The high school in the foreground now serves as the middle school after consolidation

-The elementary school in front of the stadium is still open

-The North Fork of the Holston River runs behind the stadium

-The school's mascot can be found on the surrounding farms

Tornado99 is correct! This is the home of the Rich Valley Steers.

Mildly interesting factoids

-The floor plan for Rich Valley HS (now Northwood Middle) is the same as Chilhowie HS

-The girls teams, not wanting to be named after castrated bulls, were called the Lassies

Thanks for sharing these, Liam. I worked in Welch a short period of time and wondered about some of the neighboring stadiums at those old schools. I was surprised that Gary ‘s was still standing and assume that Northfork’s is now occupied by a double wide, since it was the only flat spot that size I noticed. I’m sure not many remember those.

I was slow on the draw with Pocahontas not being online, but recognized it instantly. It’s obviously the right decisions fiscally to close the schools, but very sad for the communities.

Not for visitors. The visitors section at JJKs was just several mobile sets of bleachers, absolute garbage

More interesting to me is the other school RB Worhty was called “The Shakers” & their mascot as a salt shaker 😂😂 which I get it Saltville but really??😂😂

How in the world a steer & salt shaker merge into panther? I like Salted Steers !

Panthers-one of the most widely-used generic names from the 80s-2000s for consolidated schools.
Northwood, Twin Valley, PikeView.

Not necessarily in our coverage area, but Wolf variations seem en vogue now with schools with Ridge in the title.
Ridgeview Wolfpack/West Ridge Wolves.

(I really like Ridgeview’s. The Sullivan County school obviously didn’t look hard to find something unique.

Or you can go completely lazy and do "Eagles."

Yeah, I'm looking at you Buchanan County.

LOL

Originally the teams were the Saltville Shakers, which, like Poca Dots, is so bad it's awesome.

The RB Worthy rename came later, but most people just kept calling them "Saltville" (not unlike JJ Kelly and JI Burton, which were still called "WIse" and "Norton" for many years).

Ok so for those of us who don't know, why was it renamed JI Burton and JJ Kelly?

I've heard the story about RB Worthy from people at work that went there.

Both schools opened in 1953 and were named after local educators.

Dr. J. J. Kelly, Jr. was a former Wise Co School Superintendent.

John Ira Burton was a longtime principal.

I don't know if the "new" schools were a result of consolidation, but many were during that era.

For those not familiar, Saltville was a company town. Olin-Mathieson Chemical owned, operated and/or funded most things in town, including the school system.

Olin built a new high school in 1957, and it was named for Olin Plant Manager, RB Worthy. After Olin left town in 1972, Smyth Co took over control of the school.

Liam you are like the Britannica Encyclopedia, a wealth of knowledge.  Go to the L-M

volume and there you are.  You've added new infusion  into digital sports in the off season.  Thanks

Mitchell Stadium?

1inStripes got it! It's Mitchell Stadium.

Thanks to @Bluefield researcher for providing the photo and info

It was originally named Municipal Stadium and was later renamed for Bluefield, WV City Manager, George Mitchell. He was instrumental in securing the Works Progress Administration project, discreetly donating large amounts of his money, and personally guaranteeing loans.
