Don’t forget Heritage

I think I included them. In the old system it just seemed to me like the Division 3 teams were often the most successful, although it may have more to do with the systemic population advantage compared to Region 4 at the time.

Graham got to big for their britches. The players, the coaches, the program, and their fans. They needed humbled.

It could be a good thing for Graham.  They looked out of sorts all night.  Bluefield was better prepared and the better team tonight.  Nothing more humbling then a loss.

Strong feeder program with solid coaching. Abe Hall will be fun to watch as the QB next year.

This^^^^. Does this go into part of the explanation for my strength/conditioning thread ? (More big bodies to choose from that are trained?)

Like the great Paul Brown once said, you learn more from a loss than you from a win.

Not having a second scrimmage worked out well for Bluefield. They were the better team tonight. I will say Graham did better 2nd half but throughout the game there were players not doing what they needed to do in the position they were playing , dropping passes that should have been caught…it seemed like one thing after another. As you said, maybe a humbling loss will do wonders for the GMen. The Princeton & Union game will tell the tale. If those games go like tonight, then Regina D & Class AA is Union’s to lose.  I will also add, Lilly gives it all every play.  The younger Nash is going to be really at kicker/punter. Hope Roberts & Fix are alright.

The blueprint for success in HS football is simple. Run the same schemes from crunch bunch through varsity, have tons of interaction between the HS kids and the p-nut/, middle school kids so they feel included, and want to be big Bears when they get older.etc. These are being done at Union and it's why we've had to add more practice fields because we have so many kids playing.

I agree.  A lot of mistakes, dropped passes, penalties, bad snaps...etc.   You can't do that against a good team and expect to win.  Bluefield has a good team and came in with the right game plan.  Simpson got rid of the ball quick and was very accurate.  Good thing for Graham is it's still early on and a lot of improvement can be made.  Also, Bluefield looked much more organized and prepared then the past 2 or 3 years.  They played with confidence.  I think they will have a good season

Not much different than the last 4-5 years to be honest

Maybe Blacksburg has vastly improved but Giles looked lost in every aspect of football. Can't run, pass, play defense, sustain a drive, block, hell they can't even punt. Terribly undisciplined and gave them a 1st down any time they used a hard count. Definitely looked different than the past 4-5 years. Never got completely embarrassed by Blacksburg during that time frame either. But...maybe Blacksburg is vastly improved? IDK

Again, I didn’t see, but Lilly running from the Wildcat/QB position was a difference maker last season.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in a state championship game.

Just meant we're a 3 or 4 win team just like the last 4-5 years....haven't been good at all in that time frame

Rustburg was a juggernaut under Paul Wheeler (George Wythe, Va High) back in the 80s and 90s

A quick note on RV. They looked good tonight. If the line play can be manageable like in the playoff game at Union last year they will have a chance to make some noise.
Can’t take a lot from tonight as they just overwhelmed Grundy.

I agree. RV seemed like they were testing a bunch of plays tonight to me. There are good! Much more complete than even us RV fans thought. I’m surprised of how strong and fast they are. Definitely got work to do, but it’s early in the season. They could throw to 13 anytime they want and a score. Run game is fire! Defense was great up front. They have to stay healthy though because it’s not a deep team as far as roster goes.

I honestly think a lot of people had higher hopes for this year's team but it appears its one and the same...but you did laugh at my "annual sense of false confidence" comment a couple weeks ago. Haha

A lot of different factors -- including some pretty poor leadership in key roles -- really snowballed to bring the program down.  But many of those are being addressed.

The fact that the Seminole is such a really challenging district is a big part of the problem -- and there is a vocal (and apparently influential) element within the LHS community that takes pride in "playing up."  That works okay in pretty much every sport other than football.  But whereas Graham was able to do that for many years back in the old SWD/VHSL alignment, Liberty hasn't been able to draw (or in many cases retain) the level of talent to stay competitive.  Also, the addition of LCA to the district added a further degree of difficulty when the "transfer portal" was already alive and well.

There are a lot of things working against Liberty -- many of which are self inflicted -- but hopefully some of those are starting to get sorted.
