BigWinners Posted October 10, 2025 Report Posted October 10, 2025 I don’t think any rational find could say the officials decided a game that was won by 21 points and one team scored seven points after the first five minutes. Quote

RV had 2 problems tonight. When it was 14 -7. I would've went for it on 4th and 6 or run a fake punt. Also at the end of the first half they should've tried to score with 3 time outs. Most knew Union was better and this was the night to throw the kitchen sink at them. Especially with the start that could not have been scripted any better. He is most likely referring to the Chandler fumble at the end of the 2nd qtr when the ref claimed he was down and was not. He was standing straight up. That wouldve been a scoop and score making it 28-21 RV at halftime most likely. The better team won. I have no issues saying that. I see issues if Union doesn't cut down on Chandler's carries a bit. If he gets hurt, the region is up for grabs. BigWinners 1 Quote
SwvaOG Posted October 10, 2025 Report Posted October 10, 2025 There’s always some revisionist post commentary after a win but here is about as fair a take as I can do about this game. 1) I tried to tell you before the game that RV’s athletes and speed were top notch. They have the skill positions. They just don’t have the LOS. 2) I also said that they were undersized at a couple of positions and could use another DL. You saw that tonight. Without going into details..two positions really hurt them tonight on defense. 3) They have a lot of young starters..particularly on defense. And, whether any Bears fans wanna admit…RV was physical…especially for the size disadvantage. Chandler got banged up a couple times. I can tell you #1, 13 and #54 were hitting dudes. 4) RV has to move on from their current implementation on offense. They just aren’t getting the results from a 4 wide offense. It totally takes away any possibility of play action fake….which is damn effective. If they insist on going four wide…they have to implement true RPOs..like Honaker. 5) Deel is good tough back. Don’t know what his numbers were but he was getting good yardage. If RV had him a couple years ago…they probably get by Graham. 6) Difference was LOS size. Hard to give up 40-50lbs on average. I’m not sure why RV can’t get more size out. 7)If you are going to beat Union you have to be aggressive with play calling and chances and win the turnover battle. 8- The officiating was really poor guys…sorry but it was and it played a factor….not enough to determine the game but this wasn’t a three score game. 9) RV needs more depth. They rely on too many two way starters. Union has good depth. 10) I’m withholding judgement about their pass defense. I have my theories and we will see what Lebanon does next week. Let’s just say that Union has the benefit of playing situational pass defense. It’s easier to play D on 3rd and 9 than it is against a team that will and can throw it well on a 3rd and 1. Baker may present a challenge. 11) I’ve still got Union getting out of the region unless Snake Palmer can rig up a sweet game plan. Pickett 1 Quote

Three major misses: 1) Fair catch (+20 yards) 2) Quick whistle on the strip of Chandler (RV doesn’t get the fumble. I’m sorry but that was a bad call. But what made it worse was the following 3) The late late whistle where Deel was picked up and carried backwards and then a kid comes in a strips the ball. Lost fumble for RV in Bear territory down 14. The officials have to be consistent. I literally said “Damn, they gonna blow the whistle” and they don’t and a kid comes in and strips the ball. Those were bad calls. I’m sorry…I’m 10 toes down on those three. Quote

On the first drive, a hold was called when the RV defender has his entire hand pulling a face mask. Union stalls and allows RV to intercept the 4th down attempt and go up two scores. Union had several holding calls, RV had one? My point is both sides can point to some iffy calls, the turnover battle ended up being even. Neither side had an advantage there abd it was a three score game. The RV defense forced one punt. The offense had no answers when Union adjusted to the inside run. We are usually on the same wavelength but we are way off here. It never felt like Union was in real trouble once they got it to 14-6. They took RVs best shot and didn’t fold. It felt like the game started as absolutely perfect as it could for RV and it still ended up being a multiple score game. Im in no way bashing RV. They’re a very good team with a lot of good pieces, I just don’t think they’re quite as good as Union right now and that proved out on the field. We can squabble about how many scores better, but better nonetheless. Quote

When he was down on the sideline, I could see any hope of a Union run evaporating. Thankfully he’s okay but you’re absolutely right they can’t rely on him to carry it 30 times every week as well as play every defensive snap. Gotta get more guys involved on offense. Quote

My post sounds harsher than it was meant to be, im just saying that while a couple calls were iffy or wrong, mostly everything went right for RV to begin the game snd they couldn’t use that to sustain an entire game. Abingdon does not have the talent this year to beat them. Lebanon is going to get physically battered. I love Reece. He will be running for his life from play 1 as the Union DL overwhelms Lebanons OL and lives in the backfield. On the other side of the ball, 10 to 15 yard runs straight off tackle for Union for 4 quarters. I'm going to go out on limb. I think this might be a running clock game with Lebanon at some point where Union finds itself up 35 points. Quote

I did an estimate last week and a 9-1 Union would be in a statistical tie with a 10-0 Glenvar. And there could be some discrepancies based on whether or not private schools are counted. This "regions doing there own points" is going to bite someone eventually. Fairlawncat 1 Quote

Bears then kicked into gear and 42 to 21 final WOW, Ridgeview had 3 big plays outside of that union held them in check no sustained drives at all. But I did look at the program and saw the pack had 17 sophomores. Someone had mentioned how young they were well got some bad news for you pack fans union also has 18 sophomores on this team. Quote

How many of each are holdbacks? (Not being critical.) I believe the sophomores of yesteryear are not the same as they are today. As I understand it from previous posts, the Ridgeview class decimated the junior class. If Union does the same, the process is probably more sustainable for the Bears simply due to numbers. I’m just curious how commonplace the practice is (every year a group of holdbacks) or more strategic (a talented group is identified to stack the deck). Quote
