Owen finished with 39 points and 9 rebounds. He's averaging 38.4 points per game for the season.

Hope David Goode is okay after leaving the game with a knee injury in the first half. I know him and his dad a little through golf circles. He's a great kid headed to Radford to play D1 college golf.

Looks like McAmis will have some company

Good chance of it then. I’m fairly certain either his dad or uncle is the head coach

Head Coach Derrick Jackson is his uncle. His dad, Dyer, has also worked for Wythe County Public Schools for a good while now, and at one time was a principal at FCHS.

Both Derrick and Dyer were quite the athletes themselves on both the court and the baseball field. If memory serves, Dyer was quite the scorer himself and received a lot of attention.....So Owen gets it honest.

I haven't heard any update on David to this point, but most folks do not anticipate a good prognosis. Absolutely hate it for the kid.

I don't know how many he needed to claim the school career points record for boys, but I do know he absolutely had a shot to make a VERY serious run at it.

I grew up with the Jackson’s. Their dad, MD was one of my coaches. We lived in the same community growing up. Dyer is my age and Derrick is my brothers age. Dyer is the principle at Sheffey Elementary School in Wythe County.

If memory serves, Dyer’s wife was also quite an athlete.

I hate that for the kid! I hope he’s able to rehabilitate and not have it affect his golf career at Radford too much. I don’t know him and Don well but do know them through golf circles. Dandy Don is as good a guy as I’ve met.

Hope it isn't as serious as feared for Goode.  Radford Golf is certainly going to have a local flare to it with Goode and Carter Wolfe from Gate City.

Benson Blevins from George Wythe is already on the team. Three out of eight on the roster from SWVA this fall!

I certainly don't want to keep derailing the thread about Jackson's historic feat because he absolutely deserves the praise and recognition. However, since we have been talking about it here in this thread, I thought I would share what GW Coach Tony Dunford had to say on Facebook regarding Goode:

"Today one of George Wythe’s greatest players ever, David Goode learned that his senior season will end prematurely due to a severe knee injury suffered just a few minutes into Tuesday’s game. When I heard the official news today, my heart broke into a million pieces for this kid, knowing how much this season meant to him. “DG” was leading our team in every category. Having played unselfishly in his role in past seasons to help GWHS see one of the best runs in SWVA history along with two state final appearances and securing a state championship title in 2025; David was well on his way to becoming GWHS’s All-Time Leading Scorer. Known to many as a “shooter”, David was consistently asked to guard the opponents best player during his career. David often led our Maroons in defensive statistics and likely has taken more charges than any player in GW history. As a freshman, David hit the winning free throws to send the Maroons to their first state final appearance since 2008. David played an integral part in helping the Maroons win the 2025 State Championship while earning 1st Team All State honors. David’s leadership was superb before his injury guiding the Maroons to a 9-1 start for the 2025-26 season. Knowing the years and hours this young man has put into his craft; to have his career end in such a manner breaks my heart. He deserved an opportunity to acheive the additional personal and team goals he had for his high school career. I am so proud of this young man. It’s been enjoyable watching him mature into an extraordinary leader for our program, school and community. As most know; David will be playing golf for Radford University after graduating. I request please for continued prayers for his health & recovery. Please reach out to him with your love, support and encouragement. I know he would be so grateful given this challenging time. I’ve been extremely blessed and honored to have coached #10"

Golf has quietly been far and away our most successful sport, winning state championships in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020 and a runner up in 2022. Since 2015 we've also had 5 individual champions and 5 runner-ups....Twice we hit those in the same year.

@Sixcat Adjacent's Maroon Tide has had similar success as well.

You're sure to find 3 things in a 75 mile radius from here:  Some very good golfers, some outstanding bass fishermen, and one Jackson kid that can fill up a stat sheet.

But not me, though. I can't do any of those three things lol

Golf is such an accessible sport in this part of Virginia. It's far more expensive and thus, far less accessible in other parts of the state commonwealth. I've said for years, Emory & Henry could take only the top talent from SWVA and be a Top 25 D2 golf program in the country! It's a shame they couldn't see that and shuttered the program. I'm a golf nerd so, I'm going to elaborate.

A couple of years ago, the NCAA implemented roster limits for all D1 golf programs. Now, D1 golf programs are only permitted to have 8 players on the roster. Any violation of this rule negates that school from using NIL for golf. That's some 1,800 fewer golfers playing at the D1 level. As a result, D2 has become a powerhouse. Kids overlooked or undervalued because they didn't play AJGA growing up are going to D2 programs rather than being extended walk-on opportunities at the D1 level. Therefore, D2 is akin to Class 2 in VHSL football. Deeper and much more of a gauntlet than any other division of the sport!

I truly believe, If Owen concentrated solely on golf and played more than 12 times a year, he'd be an ACC/SEC caliber player like Jake Albert. But he's such a ridiculous athlete, he deserves to play basketball and baseball as much as he wants.

This is why players will run through brick walls for Tony Dunford! I hate this so much for David. He's such an awesome kid.
