When jobs come open around here I think these schools should look outward. Some of the most successful coaches from here did not go to the schools they were successful at. I know it goes both ways but Phil Robbins, Ralph Cummins and Greg Mance are good examples.

Yep. I remember when Poss Bolling took the vice principle job, and PV went from Don Williams taking the job before backing out to go to Pennington, then Bucky Meade taking the job only to back out when Coach Cummins had a health scare and decided to retire. That left PV with this Robbins guy who (IIRC) most fans were pretty "meh" about, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Can Union expect a head coach to be named next month’s SB meeting? I would think they’ve had plenty of time for applications & interviews.

The announcement timeline will indicate how open this job was. Interviews tend to move slowly when they are truly looking for the right person.

If the announcement comes quickly, they already knew who the new coach was going to be long before interviews.

If I remember correctly, wasn’t Nick Saban Alabama’s second or third choice?

Spurrier was the second choice, kind of, but never was offered and the conversation was brief. With the first and only phone call to Spurrier after Rich Rod said no, Spurrier quickly said he's not interested and in that same call, he recommended Saban to Alabama. RichRod was the first choice.

Robbins record was less than impressive when he got the job. He was a late in the year hire and so was Barry Jones from my understanding.

Yes, IIRC, Robbins had a sub .500 record and (I believe) was hired in late June or early July.

I heard there was Travis Turner evidence in the freezer at Reno's so the Wise County powers had it burned down.

The Union football playbook. Been frozen in time since the 90's.

As far as playbooks go I feel if you examined the majority of top programs in 1/2 A for past 40 years you would find pretty thin playbooks....... Central of Lunenburg,Madison Co,Clintwood,Strasburg,Parry McCluer,Galax,Riverheads and the previously mentioned Appy and PV just to name a few.

To think, what PV might have been if Meade would have taken the job!

I heard a rumor that Kevin Saunders has a Second Interview this week for the Union Football Job.

He did lead Gretna to a state championship. He has previous  ties to the area and plenty of experience. He’s got to be in his 60s by now not that age disqualifies him. I wonder how many and who got second interviews if they’re to that point.

Probably. That's been a day or two.

Was just thinking with the Clintwood reference about a heath issue for Cummings. Bucky Meade was from Norton but was a HC at Pennington and mostly Twin Springs for his career.

Yeah, I remember Bucky being at Pennington and TS. It was Bobby
