Richlands will finish 4th & has 2 in the finals - both face the Islanders.

 

Rural Retreat leads Grundy in Class 1 by 3 points after the semis. They put 4 in the finals, the Wave went 7-0 in the semis to make up a big deficit. The consi matches for RR will be huge.

So that does it for the Grundy High in wrestling history. Final Chapter. 28 titles I think, maybe 29? Heck of a run for Grundy High wrestling. I was hoping they would have had 30 before school closer. That would have been cool. 28 is cool enough though.

I wonder how much of a presence Southern Gap will be next year in Class AA.

Southern Gap will figure to be watered down over the years from what Grundy was, but that won't happen in 1 year. There will still be enough Grundy tradition, technique, prowess, and current 10 year olds today that have come up in the Grundy system to be a force in Class 2 for 5 to 8 years. The watering down part will take at least 5 years or more for Southern Gap to not be a top 3 Class 2 wrestling school.

Congratulations to all the area individual champions, and to Rural Retreat. We got so accustomed, and rightfully so, with Grundy’s dominance, but Rural Retreat has had a solid wrestling program for years. Region C and D’s showing is a testament toward the commitment to the sport. Unlike basketball, wrestling doesn’t seem to be dominated by the best natural athletes, though it helps, but by discipline and technique. There’s a lot of tough kids in SWVA.

Special shout out to the improvement of Richlands thanks to the wrestling club. The emphasis on building a team, not just individuals is bearing fruit with the 4th place finish without a single individual champion, but several solid performances. Great job!
