I was guessing the same thing but haven’t heard anything. Hopefully we can just keep them in the schedule for a few years.
Only thing bad about it is the drive to Bluefield

Can you imagine what they say about the drive to Rose Ridge? Last time they visited it was a great game..21-19 Bluefield. Ridgeview turned it over inside Bluefield’s 5 yard line on an ill conceived jump pass.

Grundy was 4-6 last year. Two of those wins were over teams they are consolidating with. Honaker beat Grundy 66 to 16 last year. Best case scenario would be 650 students at Southern Gap next year. I agree that Tester is a good coach but I'd pump the brakes on winning 7 or 8 games in year one.

There will be year one growing g pains implementing Tester’s offense.  I’m assuming he will running a wing-y or something similar.  Once they get it down pat they will move the ball methodically but may not be explosive.  I think the problem may be defensively and dealing with the pass which has been the thorn in the side for Grundy historically. I’m betting 6.5 wins.

I don't rem. if this has been mentioned, but the MS team was a combined team  last year... SGMS, and Tester was their coach.

And they were pretty damn good too.

This was the basis of my prediction, combined with cityofRaven’s points. I know it will be a very good freshmen class, but they’ll still be freshmen primarily (unless there are upper class surprises).

Mine as well. But I thought they would be pretty good due to coaching also.

They may be 5-5, but again, you have got to consider rhe differences in school size, for example between them and Rye Cove or even Eastside or Giles. They have a major numbers advantage and more to choose from. In year 1, they would be right on the cusp of being Class 3. And with Greg Tester, he'll have a fourth of the boys in the school out for football. When they take the field for game one, do not be surprised if they have 60 kids dressed. We are talking about a school that at least when it opens, will be a good chunk larger in numbers than Graham, Richlands, and Tazewell and Lebanon, and Va High. If you have those kind of numbers and you have a Coach that clearly knows what hes doing, the law of averages says you are going to be competitive and that being competitive probably isn't going to take very long to achieve.

Might be in the top 5 largest Class 2 schools in Va and at least, likely top 10 in numbers. So, they got a lot of kids to choose from and they have Tester who gets buy in. I dont need to go to Buchanan County Va right now to know that with Tester, their kids right now are likely in the top 10 percent of all coverage area teams regarding the work they are putting in. Add to that Testers on field IQ, and they aren't losing more than 5 games with that schedule. I'll go 7 and 3.

Losses are at home to Ridgeview and on the road against Eastside and Giles. They win the other 7.

Other than Princeton, Abingdon, and Pulaski, and maybe I'm missing one, Southern Gap will be the 4th largest school in the coverage area when it opens. It won't stay that way, but at least for the first couple of years, its simply going to have a numbers edge on most schools in the coverage area and it has Tester, who isn't average. He's top notch.

Hilarious is a word that comes to mind after reading several of these comments by the Greg Tester Fan Club. I especially like this like this one, Tester’s on field IQ, matter of fact it got me a coughing fit started after laughing so hard. Coughed for around 10 minutes. Tester’s field IQ is not very high. We can name at least 6 current retired coaches from Buchanan County that know more football (Football IQ) and throw in the coaches who have passed away and Tester doesn’t even make the Top 10, in Buchanan County. Then this comment, On the same level of Graham’s coach, yet, has he ever won a Regional Championship?  Ridiculous is another word that comes to mind.  Instead of Field IQ, you are searching for this to describe Tester, One-Dimensional and Predictable. Some of you people are very comical, clueless, but comical.

You people who are so high on Tester are clueless. Tester will probably be gone in 3 or 4 years (after certain kids are no longer with the program).  Tester is the type of coach who wants to ride in when he thinks there’s talent coming and ride out when the talent starts to fade. What some refer to as a “Sunny Weather Coach”.

Resentments are a real thing. I believe you might be the kind of guy that would piss down a man's back and tell him its raining.

Everyone has an opinion. I don’t think this one should be easily dismissed nowadays, either. Not making a value judgement, but fact is many coaches at all levels do so with a personal connection. In an over optimized world, “daddy ball” is sometimes a necessary evil. It’s a very good way to take 2 very different roles (parent and coach/breadwinner) and do it at once. I don’t know his connection, but likely in the past it was a very real one. Coaches careers are very short in general nowadays, thanks to greater demands and less authority in the roles. I say many take on the challenges with family (current or future) in mind, rather than being a career in itself.

Whether the intent is personal or not, I don’t blame Coach Tester if true, nor Hoyt with the opinion. It really takes a special person to step into huge challenges and sacrifice unnecessarily without somewhat of a real chance for success, even though we can think of times it happens. I do think success comes at a higher cost in sports than it used to often taking higher priority than arguably more important things.

Do you remember what Hurley was like when he first took over?

I dont blame Hoyt for his opinion either. I'm glad he gave it. I blame Hoyt for the personal attacks on others for their opposing opinion in the form of calling them clueless and fan boy club. Statements he made leaves the door open questioning whether he has something personal against Tester.

From Fourseasons:

8-3 the year before GT

0-10 1st year of GT

73-57 overall in 11 years

Looks like the schedule was packed with bottom tier WV / KY teams with signature wins being Parry McCluer in 2015, Rural Retreat 2016, and Eastside in 2017
