That Virginia High job intrigues me. I'd love to take that challenge but this North Carolina retirement system has me locked in. (23 years in) Lol..

Has PH or Va High or Rye Cove hired anyone yet.

Kevin Timmons was just announced the new head coach at Va High, which is strange because he's the girls head coach

He done both once before didn't he?  Not sure if that's the case this time or not but was thinking he did it a few years ago.

Yes one season he coached both, but he stepped down as the girls coach and he's only doing the boys

That will be strange seeing him coach boys. Was there drama with girls’ parents or he just wanted a change you think? Not to sound sexist but girl sports’ parents are a different beast.

That's a very good question, I do know there was an incident at Tazewell with Timmons and one of the girls on the team. I was first told it was a fist fight, then later told the girl was mouthy and it was more of a shouted match, the girl quit the team.

I don't understand Va High logic on this, Timmons has coach the girls almost double the years as Julius has coach the boys, Timmons only has 1 state appearance, Julius has 3 in half the time. Timmons around 10yrs of coaching only made it out of the 1st round of regions once and that was the only state appearance that had 3 girls all the same class that went on to play college basketball and could manage to get out of the 1st round of region once with that talent. Now if Va High wants to say that they had to get rid of Julius because of the Floyd County incident then they got me there, I can't argue against that. Timmons is also the assistant athletic director at Va High so there's probably more to the story that I don’t know yet

Part of the reason Timmons couldn't advance past the first round of region is because they would match up against one of the top teams from the toughest district in the state for girls basketball

Va High Girls were usually the 1 seed hosting the 4 seed from the Mountain District on their home court and still couldn't win. This year they got put out by a very down Gate City team. Va High Boys will have to deal with Graham and Lebanon in the district.

Widespread beat me to it yes the M7 is on a different level but around 2016-20 Timmons struck gold in this area with Amaya Lee and two other girls all the same class went on to play college ball, one went to Emory, another Walter State and King College and only managed to get out of region 1st round once. This year he struck gold again with Kaiden Harris she might be d1, she's definitely d2 and they got bounced out by a very down Gate City team this year. I'm not saying va high should have beat Ridgeview, union or wise central this year but Gate City they should have. I'm not knocking him it's just i don't understand the logic of getting rid of somebody that accomplished more in half the time to get someone with less

Could it just be good old school politics? I feel like when things like this occur & make zero sense to the average person, it’s more likely than not , political.

Yes I agree it's usually politics, if the powers be at Va High wants to say that the incident at Floyd is the reason that they couldn't keep Julius because it was a very bad look then my hands are tied behind my back i can't rebuttal that

The M7 really is on a different level as far as girls’ basketball and has been for a while. How many SWD girls’ teams have made it to state tournament say in the last 15-20 years and/or won region? Richlands did maybe a couple times when they had Allen girl   (someone from Richlands may be able to verify)but I’m not sure anyone has.

Va High made it to the state semi back in 2018, that's the only team that I know besides if Richlands made it. I say at least 6 or 7 of the last 10yrs the M7 has swept the swd in the 1st round. I looked on Maxprep when Va High did it they didn't have a impressive record, they must got hot at the right time

I went to MaxPreps, Richlands lost in 2011 to Staunton, lost in 2012 to Liberty, & lost in 2013 to Brookville. They were playing some larger schools. It was harder to make it that far back then. This was pre- 6 classifications. Then M7 & Central started their domination.

I didn't realize Richlands had them a nice little run. The M7 vs SWD in region i say they've been doing this for around 10yrs or so. It wasn't the swd it was called the highlands district back then in the 90's I know the 99 season and 2000 season Va High went undefeated in the regular season and I want to say the 98 season they did too, they never won state but they had a few state appearances. State was held in Salem/Roanoke back then and Va High had Sherell Sowho she went to play at West Virginia, we all for sure thought she was going to the wnba but when she got to West Virginia she made some bad decisions I think by her senior year West Virginia kicked her out
