Bluefield stays perfect on Sexton's kick
RICHLANDS, Va. - A cold wind prevailed through the concrete bleachers at Ernie Hicks Stadium Friday night. It was a perfect setting for a clash of two titans.
In the end, the game came down to the final seconds as Asher Sexton hit a 28-yard field goal to give the West Virginia Class AA No. 1 Bluefield Beavers a 16-13 win over the defending Virginia Class AA Division 3 State Champions Richlands Blue Tornado Friday night at Ernie Hicks Stadium.

'Mules' pave way for Spartans
BLACKSBURG -- You don't always need horses to win football games. Sometimes all it takes are "Mules."

That's what Salem calls its beasts of burden, and Friday night the offensive line carried a major load as the unbeaten Spartans continued their early domination of the River Ridge District with a 21-0 thrashing of Blacksburg.

Salem (7-0, 2-0) controlled the line of scrimmage, the clock, the ball and everyone in a blue Blacksburg uniform to run its regular-season winning streak to 31 games.

Salem High School's Jonathan Clemo (21) breaks away from a tackle by Robert Sterrett and powers his way to the end zone for the Spartan's first TD of the game during first quarter at Blacksburg High School.

Nothing Bland about these Bears

NARROWS, Va. - A week off from football did nothing to change the balance of power between a couple of Mountain Empire District opponents.
Bland County improved to 6-1 for the second straight year on Friday night, pulling away in the second half for a 32-15 win over the Green Wave of Narrows (1-6).
