Here are some looks at each weight class. Should be a very good tournament! Very competitive!!!!!
103 weight class-Purifoy from Abingdon is the favored wrestler here. He is undefeated this season. the run for second will be tight between Freeman of Marion, and Santoemma of Magna Vista.
112 weight class-this will be a dog fight for the regional champ between Hankins of Grundy, and Schuster of Carroll County. Flora from Tunstall will give Hankins a very good match in the Semi Finals
119 weight class-a very good weight class Champion will be whoever shows up to wrestle between Walk of Graham, and Pace of Bassett. In the run for second will be a tight one between Flinchum of Grundy, Parks of Marion, and Wilson of Tazewell.
125 weight class-this weight class is LOADED! Kris Stiltner of Grundy should win it with no problems. but there are some very good wrestlers behind him! Castle of Virginia High, Glenn of Marion, Hamrick of Martinsville, Copeland of Magna Vista, and Jackson of Richlands. This weight class is definately one of the toughest.
130 weight class-Bowman of Carroll County is the favorite, he will have a tough match in the semi finals with Moore of Martinsville or Smith of Grundy. Second is up for grabs, Powers of Marion, and Brown of Graham should meet in the Semi Finals.
135 weight class. Aaron Stiltner of Grundy, and Dorian Carter of Martinsville will meet in the finals. Should be a good match!!!!! third is up for grabs...but should be Addison of VHigh
140 weight class. The piedmont district is loaded in this weight class! Lanier of Magna Vista will battle in the finals with the winner between McCowan of Grundy, defending regional champ Caldwell of Tunstall, and Dionne of Martinsville.
145 weight class Brown of Grundy, and Deadmore of Abingdon in the finals, fight for third with Shortt of Richlands, and Echols of Tunstall
152 weight class this is another loaded weight class whoever comes with their head on straight in the bottom bracket can win it-Tuell of Abingdon, Flood of Martinsville, Peery of Graham, Smith of Richland. In the other bracket Curcio of VHigh, and Owens of Grundy will meet to determine who will go to the finals.
160 weight class Penley of Grundy is heavily favored in this class. Other noteable wrestlers: Owens of VHigh, Hairston of Bassett, Martin of Martinsville, McDaniel of Tazewell.
171 weight class probably the toughest weight class. Shelton of Martinsville and Henderson of Graham should be in the finals, and the one who wants it the most....... but there are others who will be giving them a big fight! Henderson will most likely have Brown of Marion in the Semi finals. in the other bracket there are three very tough wrestlers-Shelton of Martinsville will have to battle Skeens of Abingdon, and Demarco Owens of Grundy.
189 weight class-Looney of Grundy should win this one with no problems, but will have to battle with Hall of Marion in the Semis to get past his toughest match. Others who should have a good tournament: Williams of Abingdon, Miller of Bassett, Hairston of Martinsville, Barreras of Graham.
215 weight class Ross of Bassett is the favorite in this weight class, but he will have a tough match with Matt Lee of Grundy. Third is up for grabs with whoever wants it most. Corbett of Patrick County, Ray of Martinsville, and Dunn of Abingdon will have to decide that.
275 weight class. this weight class is very interesting. Rhodes of Marion should win it, but there are many wrestlers who could have a good tournament! Houchings of Richlands, Witt of VHigh, Foley of Bassett, Porter of Martinsville, Stiltner of Grundy, Martin of Graham.
It should be one of the best tournaments in a while! Come out to Graham on Friday, and Saturday, and watch some good wrestling!!!!!
The Virginia AA Region IV Wrestling Tournament is this weekend. It is hosted by Graham High School at Graham Middle School. Wrestling begins on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The finals are set for Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
BLUEFIELD, Va. - If Saturday's Graham Invitational wrestling tournament had been a Hollywood script, the followers of the Galax Maroon Tide would be looking for a rewrite of an unreal ending.
The Graham G-Men entered the trophy round with an 18-point deficit yet claimed their fourth consecutive championship of the invitational, turning back the Tide 46-36.
"Galax had a very, very good wrestling team. They had a full team," said Graham coach Tim Woodward. "We had to forfeit one weight class to them."
Jesse Peery, voted most outstanding wrestler by the coaches, began Graham's comeback with a victory in the 152-pound match.
At 215 pounds, G-Man Brent Cook "really turned things around" in his match, Woodward said. "He was about eight points down, but right there at the buzzer he managed to throw and pin (his opponent, although) he was outweighed by 35 pounds."
That put Graham ahead by four points with the heavyweight showdown still to come. The outcome was in the hands of junior Elisha Martin.
"I was so hyped up," Martin said. "I wanted to go out there and win."
With 15 seconds left in his third and final period, Martin's pin wrapped up the victory and he left the mat with "relief, and joy that I helped my team win," he said.
Woodward said, "It was great to come back on a Galax team that, I thought, had our backs against the wall. ... From 152 (lb.) to 275, we just ran straight pins, right across the board."
Peery said, "We knew what we had to do."
"We were fired up," teammate Travis Walk said. "We were ready to wrestle." The last portion of the meet, he said, "was nerve-wracking. I'd finished my match so I was just standing there, watching."
Graham's Andy Henderson said, "It feels great to win in front of our home fans and at our school. It seems that our school is finally getting into the wrestling thing, so we look for a big turnaround the rest of the year."
Eric McDaniel, a Tazewell sophomore, went 4-0 in the tournament, finishing second at 160 pounds behind Patrick Henry phenom Kellie Nichols.
McDaniel said the level of competition "was really rough compared to others we've been in." Asked for the reason for his unbeaten performance, McDaniel said, "Hard work all week. That's about all you can do - work your butt off."
The weather-delayed tournament hosted seven varsity teams that included around 100 boys. The quickest pin trophy went to Travis Rose of third-place Lebanon, who took eight seconds to subdue an opponent. Rose finished first in his weight class.
Graham reached the trophy round by beating Holston 72-6, Lebanon 60-24, Grayson County 57-18 and Tazewell 72-6. Tazewell defeated Patrick Henry 30-18 but lost to Galax and Lebanon.
Graham - Jared Palmer (third, 112 lb.), Reggie Brown (third, 125 lb.), Antonio Kelsor (third, 130 lb.), Charlie Holbrook (second, 140 lb.), Justin Dove (fourth, 145 lb.), Jim Ed Williams (third, 160 lb.), Cook (second, 215 lb.).
Tazewell - Shane Wilson (second, 119 lb.), Jared Thomas (third, 145 lb.), Eric McDaniel (second, 160 lb.), Luis Salinas (fourth, 275 lb.).
Marion finished first 5-0, Rural Retreat finished second 4-1, Northwood finished third 3-2, JJKelly finished fourth 2-3, Graham finished fifth 1-4, and Richlands finished sixth 0-5.
A couple notes: Tazewell's 130, 145, and A team 275 out with injuries. Probably not a difference, but they do have kids at those weights. Also, 125, 140, 215, 275 are freshmen. 119 match was a good match, Grundy was up 7-5 with 10 seconds left and Tazewell got a reversal as time expired to tie it. Grundy got a takedown with 30 seconds left in first OT to win
