Teams can't just move anytime they want to - it has to be done at the start of a 2-year cycle (unless something weird happens - like a county closes 2 schools in the same District over the Summer). The next cycle starts in Aug., 2007, which is the earliest C'burg can move to R4 AND the earliest Grundy can drop to A.
The proposal is a "work in progress", and changes can be made up to the Spring of 2007, although waiting that late will cause major scheduling headaches. Then when you take in the fact that divisions aren't announced until July or so, some coaches (like Winter sports) don't know where they officially are until classes start back and they ask somebody.
I'm hoping that if Grundy is joined by at least 1 Taze. Co. school, they'll just say "screw it" for 2007 and wait 'til '09 (a fellow can dream, can't he?).
Back to where the wrestlers placed - you'll also noticed that we beat Brentsville, which also beat TA. The order was just reversed this weekend. Anyone who's been to state knows anything can happen (like 2 #1 seeds at a certain weight losing their opening match [AA-HWT] or 2 #1 seeds falling on opening day, giving a guy an "easy" path to the finals, where he beats a kid who Majored him at Regionals the past 2 years [A-103]).
And everyone's still waiting for the Dickenson Co. consolidation of Haysi/whoever with the new flood-plan school. And kinda waiting to see what happens in Wise Co.
It will be hilarious if Grundy and another SWD school or 2 decide to stay "A" when the numbers need to be petitioned this Fall. The new realignment plan may need to be "tweaked" again.
Tazewell girls will play #9 Hidden Valley on Sat. @ 2:00 @ Northside H.S. in Roanoke.
Directions - Take I-81 up to I-581 (Roanoke - Exit 143).
Go about a mile to the first exit - Peters Creek Road. Hang a right at the top of the ramp, then go about a half-mile to the 1st light. Turn right and the school is about 1/4 mile up on the left.
Can't thing of any eats "beside the road" once you pass C'burg, but there is a Hardees & a Dominos about a half-mile on down Peters Creek.
Could actually happen this time. With a new H.S. on the horizon, a new District might go along with it. As to which district - who knows. 3-4 years ago, talk was of a "super district" with us, GC, PV, maybe even Honaker & Lebanon.
nope - needed to stay home this weekend since Salem's coming up. Didn't hear any radio coverage last night - don't know if they had any planned for today or not.
After three 2-and-out's in the past 7 years, a young lady has finally picked up a win at the VHSL state wrestling tournament. First, it was Shawsville's Andee Sears in 2000, then, last year, both Hadley Perona from Wytheville & Herndon's Firen Gassman were unable to out-point the guys. Firen, who's just a Soph., made it back this year as the #4 seed from the AAA Northern Region at 103. After losing her opener, she picked up a 10-7 decision in the first consolation round before being eliminated in round 2.
After spotting Grundy a 3-point lead after the 1st quarter, MV went on a 15-0 run, inc. a 2:00, 10-point streak by Ashley Norton, as the Lady Warriors easily defeated Grundy 66-38. After a pretty even 8 minute stretch sandwiching h/t, MV went on another 15-0 run to lead 56-26 with 6:00 to play. Norton led all scorers w/ 25 points while Latisha Belcher added 24. Kaitlyn Riley & Ashley Cook led the Lady Wave (19-4) w/ 12 each.
MV (17-3) advances to play either Tazewell (15-10) or Va. High (20-3) for the Region IV crown Friday night at 7 at the Bearcat Den.
The Wave boys have their work cut out for them Thur. night as they travel to Bassett. Word is that a lot of the Bengals were F-C football players a couple of years back.
I just know they've been waiting to get another shot at us since we won the last football game ever played at F-C.
Go down 77 to exit 14. Take a left at the bottom of the ramp onto 58 East for about 10 minutes. You'll pass through Hillsville (be careful at the light - left-turning traffic just over the hill may not be visible), and the school is about a mile or two down on the left.
Samantha Rice scored 15 of her game-high 18 points in the first half as the Lady Wave downed Tazewell 58-50. Grundy will have a first-round bye in the Region IV tournament, then host a semi-final game next Thursday night.
Carroll Co. won the SWD JV tourney title by defeating Grundy 33-29 in overtime.
Grundy 58 : Cook 13, Rice 18, Lindsey 10, Fletcher 6, K. Riley 4, Bowman 7, Hibbitts, Davis, A. Riley.
Lots of ticky-tacky fouls on Grundy - at least 2 each in the 1st & 4th while being statues.
When you establish position at the foul line before the ball crosses half-court, then stand there with your arms up, how do you get called for a foul when the other girl makes contact?
Grundy saw a 6 point lead at the half turn into a 6 point deficit with about 2:30 left.
Cook's trey with :06 left sent the game into OT, where the Lady Waves ran the clock down to 3:10 before taking & hitting their 1st shot. Good ball control and D led to a shut-down of the G-Girls, who were outscored 9-0, as Grundy won 66-57.
Grundy wins 58-52 - heads back to Taze. for Wed. night game vs. Carroll. I'll be at the wrestling tourney, so don't know when I'll get back to post the score.
Results from day one???
