  1. "Mingo South" (for M/B/W) is still being fought in court. I think 2008 is the earliest that construction can start at the Red Jacket site, near the new CFX.

Gauley Bridge was closed this Summer by Fayette Co. - they'll be going to Valley (Fayette) in Smithers now.

Big Creek & Iaeger are supposed to consolidate at Bradshaw in a couple of years.

Heard groundbreaking was planned for this Summer, but a cemetary has to be moved before the access road can be built.

  2. No schedules have it yet because it hasn't been officially announced yet because they don't have a date yet. I was told early last week that they were working on a way to play it in Sept., which would mean a minimum of 2 other games would have to be moved.

Everyone had 2 bye weeks last year, too. In 2003, the ONLY Region D or IV team with a bye going into the playoffs was Castlewood.

  3. When you have a tie for 1st, you have "co-champs". No "tie-breaker" is used - you have co-champions, and that's it. BUT, because the VHSL needs ONE team to be named DC for the playoff seedings, their (current) rules call for the team with the higher rating to get that distinction (I don't know exactly when they started doing that). Again, that's ONLY for playoff determination / seedings.

Head-to-head is just something to brag/argue about. I personally think the head-to-head LOSER should be considered the champ. Let's use the LPD as an example. If Gate City & Powell Valley both finish 6-1, 9-1, and PV beat GC, who did PV lose to? Simple, a team that wasn't as good as either of them (they could have went 5-2, 8-2 or 1-6, 1-9, it doesn't matter). By using the head-to-head method, you're saying the team that got beat by the weaker team is your best one. To me, that does't make sense.

And let me add a couple of cases from 2001. Bland, Galax and Grayson Co. all went 4-1 in the MED, while Martinsville & Magna Vista both went 7-1 in the Piedmont.

  4. james :

Hurley just has 2 BDD titles - Garden won it in '83, so they had 4.

    Tigerfan :

    BDD was formed in '78

Twin Springs left the CVD in '76

St. Paul left the BDD in '90

    Pocy left in '96

Rich Valley & Worthy were always in the Hogo

  5. hey, rules ...

In Va, names don't mean squat.

York is Williamsburg, but Yorktown is in Arlington.

And Salem. Well.... name was changed to Andrew Lewis when new building opened in 1933 after the old one burned, then changed back to Salem in '77 when another new building opened. In the meantime, Salem High School opened in Va. Beach, which is why you see Salem (VB) and Salem (BR) in the AP scores sometimes (even though they left the Blue Ridge a few years back for the River Ridge).

We also have Franklin (the County) south of Roanoke and Franklin (the city) just West of Norfolk.

  6. Just remember that is Lori's 1st draft. It'll take a week or 2 to fix all the 'bugs' in it, esp. if they're still using the same program as last year, where a schedule couldn't be edited... it had to be re-entered completely, so a prob. that wasn't there on the 1st draft may show up on the 2nd.

I just looked at western VA. and found these 'bugs' :

    games with no home team : Graham-Carroll on 11/4, Narrows-Fort Chiswell & Craig-Bath on 11/11

    Graham's 2nd game w/Bluefield isn't listed.

So be certain changes will be made to it.

  7. '97 sched. doesn't have a private school - they started on 8/29 by losing at home to Carroll by 3. Looks like Matewan prob. was HC that year.

'96 sched. had Matewan, Bell Co., Ky & Bluefield.

Found it - 9/1/95, Phelps was on the master schedule, but was replaced by a 6-0 win over Providence. Also had C'burg & B'burg that year.

'94 opener was the Cumberland, Ky. Redskins.

  8. Vansant used to have the only football field in the county.

Grundy Sr. High opened in '64, but "County Stadium" didn't open until 1965 (I can't find in my notes when it became Nelson Memorial Field). Ernie Hicks' last game was also the last game at Vansant (11/13/64 : Grundy beat Richlands 47-6).

Garden & Hurley didn't get their own home fields until 1980. That was also when Grundy's new press-box and bleachers went up (who else misses the wood?).

  9.

I went back and looked at what the VHSL had posted before.

The realignment stuff that was approved (cussed, discussed, appealed, etc.) didn't say anything about Divisions - just Groups, Regions and Districts with corresponding enrollment (ADM) numbers. Apparently, these were added just for looks.

Since an actual Division list had not been published before, I'll have to say I made a mistake, based on erroneous info. If those numbers weren't the ones that were to be used, they should have said so or not put them in there to start with.

That said, I'm glad the VHSL is using the latest numbers available.

  10. Bluefield Rules : William Campbell was listed as the 8/26 game on the KEYSER schedule posted a while back. Weird, huh?

Tigerfan : On the Va. side, each game counts as one game / one opponent/ one w or l. If they split and you get confused over power points, do all the wins first, then all the losses.

2 losses by Graham to a 10-0 Blfd. team in 2004 would have given the G-men (0 for a win + 10 x 1 for each of their wins + 2 for playing a Div. 2 team) 12 points each time for 24 points (at the end of the season).

    A split would have given them (0 + 9 + 2) and (10 + 18 + 2) for 11 + 30, or 41.

  11. The VHSL used the ADM "as reported to the State Dept. of Education on March 31, 2004" for their every-other-year "realignment", which will occur oer the Summer. This is the "Graham = 481" set Cougarfan posted.

My guess is G-Man's "Graham = 502" set is the ADM submitted 6 weeks ago, which would make the D4 & D3 headers useless, since the 2005 ADM numbers shouldn't be used for anything "official" by the VHSL (maybe the R&R people will use it to tweak the proposed 2007 plan... you never know).

I've never seen the VHSL "overhaul" the realignment when new numbers come out. Cougarfan's 2004 set ("Graham = 481") has already been presented, cussed, discussed, appealed, modified & approved for the next 2 school years. No changes except when a school opens or closes (like Magna Vista went through last Fall).
