  1. what rules would you like to see changed?

    I'd like to see:

-pass interference changed to a spot foul (or) + 15

-knee down on kick off not automatic dead ball...hate to see a kid reach for a ball and have a knee touch and get ruled down...it's a stupid rule.

-would like to see the end zone made live on kick offs, as it is now as soon as the ball hits the goal line it's dead.

-less "official" time outs...if a kid has equipment issues then get him off the field...get tired of watching them give kids all day to fix the same stuff over and over again.

-OT changed to be more like a 5th QTR with sudden death. A few years ago Grundy played Va High and Va High didn't get across mid field until OT when they were given the ball in the red zone. I don't see why you play a game one way for 48 minutes then change the rules and the game just because the score is tied.

OT. I like the current format, but not giving the ball at the 10. Would prefer to see it at the 25. Make the teams work harder for it.

As for the endzone being dead, I thought it used to be live in either WV or VA like 20+ years ago. Made for different rules for Bluefield-Graham depending on that year's home team.

I remember seeing a kid for Bluefield, in a state championship game, have a complete mental shutdown...kickoff went past him, laid there around the 5. It's like the kid thought it was a punt, he got away from it. Think this was against Mussleman. And even the Mussleman kids went down and "downed" the kickoff, and it became their ball, first and goal.

  2. We just need to keep our coach for 3 years or more and let the kids learn the system. I would take 2 losing seasons if the results are positive after.

It's easy to field a team but it takes time to build a program!

Agree. Four coaches in four years is almost a guarantee that whoever takes (or whoever took) over will go through a lot of bad before being able to establish good. Think about it...those seniors have never had two consecutive years of the same offensive or defensive scheme. If the same coach can stay 3-4 years, the freshman can make it to seniors and have (hopefully) mastered whatever system is in place.

  3. Princeton (0-6) plays host to St. Albans (0-6)

-The two worst defenses in WV Class AAA...Princeton is allowing just over 45 pts/game and St. Albans is giving up 44.5 pts/game. Should be a real barn-burner.

On the VA side, in an MED matchup...

Narrows (0-5) plays at Bland Co. (0-5)

-Narrows is riding the wave of a 19 game losing streak while Bland Co. has lost 10 straight since beating Narrows last season.

Princeton apparently thumped St. Albans pretty well. We'll take the bonus point. I'm just shocked to see how bad some traditionally good (or mediocre, in the case of Princeton) teams are doing. James Monroe is horrid. St. Albans used to be decent.

  4. Personally, this one will be a white wash! Bluefield will score quickly, and often, and the folks from McDowell County will be headed back down route 52 rather early.

    Bluefield 50

    River View 14

Your guess was pretty close, as the final was 49-12. Bluefield could have really put a hurting on them, Simon showed a lot of grace and took it REALLY easy on them in the second half. So much so, at the end of the game, Bluefield could have scored again, and they took a knee several times and turned it over on downs.

This game could have easily been 63-6. Beavers look insanely fast...River View simply had no answer for the speed.

Oh, and the kickoff thing got fixed. Freddy abandoned that group huddle thing on kickoffs and spread the kids out. Finally. And it worked. Don't think a kick was returned past the 30 yard line.

  5. You are not mistaken and it looked like an instant replay to me. Both went down the home side line to the house. De ja vue all over again as Yogi Berra says. That bunched kick off that the Beavers use leaves them vulnerable to a return unless the kicker can really "place" the ball where it needs to go.

Don't know why Simon is so determined to keep using it. Seems to be a nightmare...bet we've given up more kickoff returns for touchdowns already than we have in an entire year. And even when they don't run it all the way back, have had a lot make it over the 50 yard line.

Kind of explains why he repeatedly used the onside kick against Princeton (I think that was it). Better to give up the ball at the 45 or midfield each time.

  6. Oh wow. That's impressive

    Thank you, gentlemen.

Could have been a whole lot worse. Well, maybe. Bluefield's last two scores were both interception returns for touchdowns. They were up 49-21 when those two happened, but they really throttled back after that.

This Bluefield team clearly has an explosive offense. Only had 36 plays on offense for something like 420+ yards of total offense. Gate City ran 60-some plays (66??). The first GC touchdown was apparently a kick return, so their offense scored 14 points out of those 60-some plays.

  7. Pioneers win 17-14! Sorry guys Pioneers needed a win too!

Just realize, folks weren't rooting against you guys...just hoping that Tazewell could win their first.

I think this Tazewell team is gonna win this year, showed a LOT of character to come back at the end of the game like they did.

  8. He concluded by saying "take care of Battle first, then winked at me and said we will get Richlands here this year."

ps: I missed seeing you there Falconman to share the moment. Text me

Great job beating Battle, Southbound! Oh wait...

    Richlands? Gonna be ugly.

  9. Great Win G-men!!! Congrats to the boys on a great start to the year!! 4-1!!!

Great start indeed! So good to see the G-Men back to the days of old. Doug who? :D

Think about that, Princeton. You're a AAA team in WV, and you got beat by a single A team in Virginia. LOL. Can't lie...wish Bluefield could have a do-over on that Graham game. But still...glad both teams are looking so good!

  10. Princeton breaks a 70 yard run w/less than 30 secs left and gets to the Graham 4. G-D holds but Princeton hits FG w/ :01 left in the half.

    Graham 15

    Princeton 16 HALF

Sure wanna see Graham win this one. I'm a Bluefield grad, root for Graham all but one game a year...even wanna see Tazewell get back to better days. But Princeton? Wouldn't mind seeing them go 0-10 every single year.

  11. Bluefield/GC thoughts

Screaming Brock sees a flag thrown in the backfield, suggests that it may be a pass interference. At least Jarvis told him that it wouldn't be that, that it was thrown in the backfield.

Bluefield stinks on kickoff coverage. Guessing it has something to do with that bunch formation they always use. Either an onside kick, a squib kick, or a return for touchdown.
