  1. I think that bad parenting is bad parenting and sexual orientation isn't really necessary to discuss in situations like this one. I cannot understand how anyone could bring themselves to drug a child in an attempt to stop the natural progressions that everyone is supposed to go thru.I do have my personal feelings as everyone else does, but it seems to me to argue about who should and shouldn't be allowed to parent take away from the kid who should be the first concern in the case.

    Ditto.

  2. No one in New York City gives a rat's ass about Rutgers football. New York City is a "pro town" and the ACC has already addressed the "New York market" by adding Syracuse...

I don't know why they'd think that. Lots more Syracuse/UConn fans there than Rutgers. That's actually the reason that UConn to the ACC makes decent sense. Good baseball, great basketball, decent academics, and put a stranglehold on the NY/New England markets.

I can report that I have seen a (singular) person wearing Rutgers paraphernalia in the two years I've been up here. That's either indicative of a.) a fan base who hates wearing their team colors or b.) a lack of influence here by Rutgers fans.

I think choice B is more likely.

  3. We've discussed it briefly in the comments section on the front page, but I think it deserves it's own thread.

First, WVU fans, are you happy with going to the Big 12?

Second, does this spell the end for the Big East as a conference? To answer that, you also have to consider that they are still a strong basketball conference. Does that make a difference in the Big East's standing in the eyes of the NCAA brass?

  4. Offensive Coordinator and Tight Ends/Offensive Tackles Coach Bryan Stinespring

Mike O'Cain, QB Coach is calling the plays.

And VT's offense has been solid, if not good this year. Go look up stats for Logan Thomas (VT's QB), David Wilson (RB), Danny Coale (WR), and Jarrett Boykin (WR). You'll be surprised.

    Now back to Bama/LSU!

Should be a good game. Sorry to take over the thread, everyone.

  5. I think you are right mistakes will decide the outcome of LSU/BAMA.

I think I have spent enough time and money at VT to call them our/my team. I may not have time to keep up with everything going on with the team but I have seen enough to know we do not have a great O and the D needs a little time to grow up.

  6. I would love to see VT win the ACC but I don't think it will happen this year. With BS calling plays our O is BS and our D is just to young. If VT meets Clemson in Charlotte I will be there to cheer them on but I don't see us winning it. Everyone thinks no one has a chance at LSU or BAMA but I would like to see the ACC get their chance. It would go a long ways for the conference if the ACC could pull off the BCS title. Not saying it would/could happen but it would be awesome.

Maybe you want to check again to see who's calling plays for VT, and also how our offense is doing this year. Also, don't use the word "our". That word is reserved for those fans who actually follow a team, and even then it's a little odd.

But the Bama/LSU game is going to come down to Lee/Jefferson vs. McCarron. Whoever makes less mistakes, wins.

You also have to consider the Les Miles factor. He likes the well timed trick play, so you would think Alabama would have to be ready for that. Also, if this game comes down to LSU having to run a 2-minute offense, then Alabama will win. Miles and Co. have been historically horrendous in the last minutes of a game they have to win...

  7. So in case you were wondering, Albert Pujols is good at baseball. Like, really really good. Tonight he went groundout, single, single, home run, home run, home run. He touched 14 bases total. What a beast. What a --wait for it-- WHAT A MACHINE (sorry. had to go there).

  8. As usual, ya gotta take your jabs at the Tag Team Champs. You got it: Southbound and Falconman. Let start of by busting a rap on your arse:

Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it and afterwards be sore.

Wouldn’t be talking so much when you called rich land, a team whose jv lost to bland?

Don’t know if I will make the trip because I’m in love with a Facebook chick.

She is hotter than a window model in a Macy’s store, and lets face it folks, Naderland is a bore.

A place that’s only good to go pick up lawnmower parts, I am from Abingdon, a place that is known for the ARTS!

A place with no cell phone service and the camo outfits make me nervous. If I make it, you will know I am there cause my victory taco shirt is what I will wear.

So, make your comments and crack your jokes, cause only in Richlands would you find fat people who are broke! Go Falcons!!!:D:p:cool:

    Ha! Nicely done, Falconman.

I think this post right here proves who wears the pants in the Falconman/Southbound relationship.

  9. Who do you feel are the top five runningbacks in Swva?? 1. Tyler Graham -Lee.2. Devon Johnson --Richlands..3. Gavan Meade --Clintwood.4..? 5? What's your thoughts ...Does Brett Johnson of Chilhowie make it or Malik Miles of Burton, Jarrod Honaker of Honaker?? Tyler Bergolowe of Hurley??:)

Jarrod Honaker or Honaker? That's just too perfect.

  10. I think it's "which team would the Rangers rather face", and I'd expect the Cardinals' fans to say "Milwaukee", as in "you better be hoping you don't get us".

Ha! Yep, you're right. Apparently I have a tough time reading in the morning. Totally didn't see the word "rather".

  11. I waited until tonight to make this post because I was so upset last night. What happened at Lebanon was uncalled for! Not only are we dealing with major injuries all over the field, we endured some of the most redneck behavior I have ever seen. I think they were trying to hurt us so we would not have a chance to beat Richlands next week. They were hitting late and cursing us! Someone even grabbed me in a bad spot on the bottom of a pile. I hope you guys get what is coming to you. Your behavior has no place on a football field. Dad said he almost went after one of your coaches after the game. Stripes has been upset all day, I think he can sense that we are all upset over last night. Hope you guys don't win another game!

    I don't know, GMan...

    Here's my vote

  12. Good times, were they not?

Hey, a win's a win. ;). First time Graham had topped Richlands since 1994, or something like that.

And if I'm not mistaken, Graham was a Virginia Honor Band in 2005-2006, too. In 2001, with RiverDance, the leadership finally convinced Brown to go after the Virginia Honor Band award if we were successful in Pulaski. Of course, we got an Excellent that year, the reason for which I'm sure you're aware. So much for that...

And I agree, bringing French in from Tazewell was a great match for Graham's band. Great timing, too...the 2004-2005 band had great balance, and adding a director who placed a premium on musicianship was wonderful.

Yeah, the other thing was that the leadership that year was completely on the same page as Brown and French. Combine that with some (over)zealous band boosters, and you have some explosions going off behind good musicianship and marching. The whole experience was just a positive for us.

I think that's a good way to put it. The 2002-2003 band was just so low brass heavy. That didn't mean that there wasn't talent elsewhere (high woodwinds were also solid), but much of the talent elsewhere was young (freshmen/sophomores), and it really takes about 2 full years before you start scratching the upper limits of your talent.

We did a show at UVA called "Gangster Jazz", and a similar show would've been perfect for that 2002 Graham band. Four movements, about 11 minutes long for the entire show, a show where a lot of movement won't necessarily kill the sound. The two videos below are from a Fresno State performance of the show. Having played and marched the music myself, I don't think Fresno's low brass goes for it enough. It's a show where the low brass can crank it about 80% of the time, and that's something that 2002 band needed. Also, the percussion line is challenging without being THAT difficult to master, and I think the 2002 Gladiator show was much too hard on our percussion, a young section that had lost a lot in 2000 and 2001.

    Movement 1:

    Movement 2:

    Our drumline practicing Movement 1:

All I can say for the links you gave is WOW. Haha, as part of the high brass, I would have loved that feverish pace. And yes, that is played at about the same volume and energy as the Gladiator show.

I distinctly remember being out of breath and having an insanely sore embrasure every time I walked off the field after Gladiator. In case you haven't heard it, here is Troy State's band playing the show. We started the show at the 1:07 mark.

    Pure energy.

  13. One thing that Brown did somewhat well, with the notable exception of 2002 (the Gladiator show was planned for 2002 in 2001, and we didn't have the high brass or percussion to pull it off), was picking music that maximized our strengths. By design, we had music that was meant to be FFF. The John Williams show, not so much, but West Side Story, RiverDance, and Gladiator were shows where you could just blast it for long periods of time.

Hahaha Gladiator was too much fun. It was great for Friday nights... not so much Saturdays.

  14. Oh band. Those were some good days. I was alongside Observer at Graham for two of his four years beginning with the RiverDance show he referenced. The most complete show I was in was Pirates of the Caribbean my senior year (2004). That year we brought in Jim French from Tazewell and he tightened up our musicianship. Combine that with Brown's ability to keep the marching pristine, and you had a successful show.

Also that year was the only year we "beat" Richlands. At the State competition in Pulaski we were awarded a Superior while Richlands scored Excellent. That's the closest I ever came to getting the W over a Swartz-led band. We ended up finishing that year as a Virginia State Honors Band, something that had never been done before and hasn't been done since (if I'm not mistaken). So that was a special year for us.

  15. I think the new face of Monday night should be Lady Gaga. Why? Because she is inclusive with all walks of life, very accepting of all races and sexual preferences, she has great music and a great sense of fashion. Can you imagine the various costumes she would get in? I would tune in every Monday just to see that! Finally, she is hotter! The ratings would go through the roof!!!!

I don't know. ESPN ended up in a Bad Romance with Hank Williams Jr. I don't know if they would go through that again.
