As a spectator, is was nice to see Smith's progression over the last couple of years. The semi-final was an entertaining game to watch. It was impressive to watch the Broad Run kid throw the ball into the goalie box from where he was at on the sidelines!
Does VT recruit any of the BHS players with the coaching change at VT?
Dehmeh is one of the smoothest players I have ever seen at the HS level. His "little" brother Geinda will step into Dehmeh's place and we should miss a beat.
We currently have 3 players on VT's roster. 2 of them start. In total we will have 14 players playing college soccer int he fall.
VT - Albert Alwang, Alistair Moore, Jeremy Williams
Emory - Dehmeh Smith
Christopher Newport - Jack Cooper
Lynchburg - Michael Releford
Emory and Henry - Brandon Brodkin and Scott McGuigan
I saw their semi-final game Friday against Broad Run. Blacksburg's center midfielder is one of the best guys I've ever seen play that position for them in the last several years. I think Blacksburg won three of four games against Hidden Valley for the season.
I am assuming you are talking about #11 Dehmeh Smith. He has been a great players for us the past 4 years. He won 3 state titles. He is going to Emory University in Atlanta in the fall.
The semifinal game was the best game by far. It was back and forth both ways. We hit the post 3 times in the first half and they had a goal disallowed because of a push. Broad Run had a kid who could throw it from midfield to inside te 6 yard box and then they were all 6-1, and 6-2. Scott McGuigan (playing at Emory and Henry in the fall) scored with about 10 minutes left off a long throw in to win.
The final was the 5th time we had played Hidden Valley. I thought we controlled the game where they only had 1 shot on goal i the game. We won 3-0. They beat us at our place 1-0 and we beat them 4-0, 4-0, 4-0, and then 3-0.
Good luck to everyone next year! What does everyone have coming back?
Starting right back Cameron Nye gave the Maroons a dramatic comeback victory over Giles 2-1 deep into stoppage time. Giles took the lead off a rocket shot in the first half. In the second half Giles played more defensive, and eventually it caught up to them. With around 10 minutes left, Kyle Semones brought the Maroons level. Drama unfolded deep into stoppage time. Giles countered on the break, and a shot was saved from the GW keeper. GW quickly countered and the ball was kick around a bit and Nye slotted home the winner. I would say that possession was around 65-35 for GW. The hosts deserved the win.
It is like that for baseball, softball, and basketball. It has been like that forever. It is not dumb at all. It is rewarding teams for their play over a whole season not just one week.
good luck. even though it'll be a tough first round game
Congrats to Richlands and good luck on Monday. I believe you play our girls team in Blacksburg at 5:30 with the guys to follow against Carroll County at 7:30.
It is going to be at east river tomorrow at 6:30 or 7. It should be at CCHS but they have the field ready for graduation on Saturday and they are taking down the soccer goals. :(
AD at Graham told me 6:00pm at East River on Thursday.
swva tourney is going to be in abingdon because they won the reg. season. It looks good what you put. But I thought it was three team from River Ridge and Three from Piedmont and Four from SWD. Is this correct?
No they changed it this year. River Ridge gets 3, Piedmont gets 2, and Southwest get 3, total of 8 and no one gets a bye. Here are the pairings....
Quarterfinals
Monday - May 31
Game 1 - Southwest #3 at Blacksburg (River Ridge #1)
Game 2 - Southwest #2 at Piedmont #2*
Game 3 - River Ridge #2 at Abingdon (Southwest #1)
Game 4 - River Ridge #3 at Piedmont #1
Semifinals
Wednesday - June 2 - Bogle Stadium (Cave Spring) *
Maybe the Tazewell Co. coaches don't vote for the Carroll Co. players because of the "attitudes" of the coaches and fans...its all part of the conspiracy...
I've even heard rumor of one administrator making the comment that Carroll Co. is the only school that he felt he "needed" to travel to when his athletic teams competed there just in case there were "issues"...and he specifically mentioned "girls basketball"...
Just sayin'...
These awards are suppose to be about the players.... anything with the fans and coaches should have NOTHING to do with the voting. You are doing a grave injustice to the players if it does. I do not have a clue who is or should have been Player of the Year but if someone had a problem with the fans and that kept them from voting for a player, that is just wrong.
Back in the day (early 90's) I played basketball against Carroll and it was a rough place to play in. That is how it is suppose to be. Players like going to a hostile environment to play. It sure beats an empty gym or people who are not into the game.
I love it when the folks from B'burg come around and talk smack. There is no doubt that they have built a dominant program on a great foundation of youth soccer in their community. They have a huge pool of talent and the financial resources to be dominant. How can you not be great when you are able to cut players who would be stars in a lot of other programs.
Comparing B'burg soccer to most other programs and talking smack about the others is both arrogant and bullying. Everyone knows they are the biggest, baddest dog in the yard, they shouldn't need to gloat.
Hold on a second. I have posted on here several times and have been nothing but respectful to all teams. I am an assistant coach at Blacksburg but before that I was actually one of the coaches who started Graham's soccer program in 1995 and 1996.
I am not sure where you come up with that we have the financial resources to be dominant. What does that have to do with anything. Our program does a tremendous amount of fundraising to support our teams. I would not say we have a huge pool of talent either. In our district more kids come out for the teams at Cave Spring and Hidden Valley.
I am assuming you are referring to region4fan's posts. He is not associated with our program at all. We keep tabs and if any of our players post on message boards and we do not allow it. We take alot of pride in having a classy program.
Please do not lump someone like that with our program.
This is an absolute tragic and horrible event. Eric was an up and coming coach who had done a tremendous job at Marion. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and to the Marion Soccer Community.
cool the state title is in region IV and it looks like it might stay here because BBurg will only lose two starters. WOW what a program!!!!!!!!!
We lose two starters, which include Alistair Moore, who is the state player of the year. But with 9 starters back and a JV team that went 16-0, we should be alright next year.
district poy has nothing to do with the all state teams. and congrats to allistair moore. he is a hell of a player. was he a senior this year? if so, where is he goin to college?
Alistair is a senior and he signed with Virginia Tech to play.

good luck to you son on everything.
I am just curious... what online recruiting service did your son's club team use?
