Corner will be definly be one of the best in the SWD on the Defensive side of the ball if youve ever watched him play you would know he is a great player. He gets so pumped and just has so much heart which results in him being a great leader. He is a returning All State pick as well. And knowing him like i do hes been waiting for this season his whole life its finally his time 2 lead the defense. And he'll be back in his old Pocahontas number...#1...hes impressed alot of people coming from a small school and not only doing stuff some people said he never would do in the SWD but doing it better by being All State. Im a former teammate of his and he has grown up so much over the years its amazing. And i think the closing of Pocahontas benefited him more than anyone in tazewell county...Keep making us Indians proud big dawg.....
i dont even remember playing him...but he sounds like hes pretty good according to you guys
All I heard is that Abingdon was going to kill Marion tonight. Marion won this game tonight without Gavin Roe that ought to tell you what kind of team Abingdon has. Let the crying begin lol
did u ever think marion might be a better team without roe???
Christian was a three-year starter for the Blue Tornado. He was a first-team All-Southwest District and All-Region IV performer this season after racking up 35 tackles, five of which were for a loss.
Defensive Line
Daniel McClanahan, Sr., Lebanon
McClanahan was a star for a team that relied heavily on its defense. He was the Clinch Mountain District defensive player of the year and finished with 70 tackles.
Defensive Line
Michael Briscoe, Sr., Marion
A standout on both the offensive line and defensive line, Briscoe was hard to stop. On defense, he routinely pushed around O-Linemen on other teams and constantly found his way into the backfield.
Defensive Line
Jayson Arnold, Sr., Tennessee High
Arnold worked his way up from a non-factor during his early high-school career into a major defensive force for the Vikings this season. “A great success story in our program,†Stubbs said. Arnold set goals, went to work, reached his goals and then reached higher: He set the Tennessee High single-season sack record this year.
Linebacker
Alex Russell, Sr., Chilhowie
The relentless and intense Russell racked up 156 tackles, 115 of which were of the solo variety. He also had three sacks and two fumble recoveries and punished several running backs from opposing teams. Oh yeah, he also rushed for 1,211 yards on the other side of the ball.
Linebacker
Alec Osborne, Sr., Clintwood
One of the smallest linebackers in the LPD produced perhaps the biggest season of any Southwest Virginia defender. Not just a prolific tackler (103), Osborne’s blinding speed and ball-hawking instincts netted him 29 tackles for loss, nine quarterback sacks and two defensive touchdowns, on his way to Region D Defensive Player of the Year honors. “He’s the best defensive football player we played against all year,†said Burton coach Jim Adams.
Linebacker
Will Godsey, Sr., John I. Burton
The 2007 All-State selection was the Raiders leading tackler in a system designed to funnel every ball carrier directly toward him. Godsey shared with Osborne the LPD Defensive Player of the Year award, and was also selected to the All-Region D first team. “Next year I’m not going to mind looking over there and not seeing him,†Clintwood coach Rick Mullins said.
Linebacker
Matt McClellan, Sr., Tennessee High
In the locker room, at practice, on the field, it doesn’t matter: McClellan is ready to burn and smash. “He’s got a great motor,†Stubbs said. “He goes with reckless abandon every play.†McClellan mixed strength with speed, tearing through blockers and sinking opposing offenses. The Vikings preach defense, and McClellan spread the good word.
Defensive Back
Jaycob Coleman, Sr., John I. Burton
Coleman could’ve made this team as a running back, after the senior finished the regular season with 1,348 yards at a clip of 16 yards per carry. But Coleman shined even brighter, if possible, at defensive back in 2007, earning All-Region D first team status at safety. “Probably better on defense than he was on offense, and he was really good on offense,†Mullins said.
Defensive Back
Jordan Bates, Sr., J.J. Kelly
The first running back to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in Indians coach B.I. Salyer’s tenure at Kelly (1,201), Bates’ defense was one of the main reasons the Tribe appeared in the playoffs for the first time since 1992. Selected to the Region D second team at defensive back, Bates finished the season with 36 tackles. “I thought Jordan was [Kelly’s] best football player,†Adams said. “He’s one of these kids who gets it done.â€
Defensive Back
Jonathan Corner, Jr., Tazewell
With 84 tackles and three interceptions, few teams through to Corner’s side of the field. He also had three sacks and helped Tazewell’s turnaround become one of Southwest Virginia’s biggest success stories in 2008.
Defensive Back
Eric Mefford, Sr., Holston
Mefford was more known for his role on offense, where he rushed for 1,566 yards and notched 20 rushing touchdowns. However, he was solid on defense as well. His interception return for a score played a key role in Holston’s win over rival Patrick Henry.
Punter
Curtis “Tuff†Williams, Sr., Chilhowie
Williams did it all for the Warriors, whether it be rushing (505 yards, 11 touchdowns), receiving (24 catches, 671 yards, 7 touchdowns), returning kicks and defense. He also did a solid job punting and burned several teams with a perfectly-executed fake.
i still think lanning was the best in the district, but the nicely kid didnt impress me that much at all. I thought briscoe done a good job and he deserved it but not nicely. And if im not mistaken a think corner from tazewell led the district in turnovers
idk im just goin off stats i was told and all i meant was i led backers thats all i was told but be honest idc anymore cause im just going to get ready for college....and when did u see me play anyways
marion could be alright have a pretty good kid thats goin be a sophmore next year (marshall wagner) who's probably going to start b/c he can run the option that we tried this year and couldn't do...also there will be a sophmore RB for marion (brett johnson) who will end up like another hanna...also have princeton graham who is a good player....but there are no returning lineman
I dont know if this has been talked about before but why are there so many kids on the 1st SWD teams? 21 on offense(including PK and KR) and 19 on defense(including Punter).. As much as I like the SWD and everything, we can't have that many kids that deserve to be in the 1st team Region IV conversation.. And I know that having 7 teams in the district is hard but come on.. 40 kids on the 1st SWD team, just make a decision..
they didnt all get put up for Region team....the ones withoutthe position beside their name didnt get sent to Region conversation
haha head hunter on defense. when we did play him he got burnt if TNT was on here 2 back me up he would tell you about how bad Parnell got burnt at Marion. And we all had 2 earn our spots on the field Parnell did start a few games but he always found a way 2 mess things up. Now i was just chilling out about all this but you guys are blowing him up like hes actually a great player.
Muncy, Hanna,Briscoe, Lanning, Christian was ight, Lane was quick, Coleman, Nicley and thats all i can think of....oh and Rasnick is good but that kids like Hanna he could play anythin and be good at it, and i heard the Corner kid is but idk him so im just goin say hes good lol
I doubt coaches spend much time pouring over stats when they pick these teams. They just go with the guys that impressed them most. Individual stats don't mean a whole lot in high school football. Starters on the better teams usually spend much of the 4th quarter, if not part of the 3rd on the bench, while those on losing teams stay in the game and accumulate stats against the JV.
naw we got taken out when JV kids came in which was only agaisnt richlands
Maybe they should give out participation trophies so no one gets their feelings hurt. There are more to football than stats...just because you had a few more tackles than another guy doesn't make you better... it could mean the ball came your way a few more times, or a number of other things.
Besides, you're making it way too obvious that you are TNT posing as a Tazewell fan to make your point.
naw its def. not me idc anymore i gotta focus on gettin ready for college so idc about this anymore
Coach Marrs had 2 make his QB feel good and get something....when i watch him punt he punted one into the stands at bluefield and if anyone has ever been there they would know how bad of a punt it was...lol
haha well if you saw me play against tazewell i can see why you are saying that, but in my defense i came out in the 3rd quarter w/ cramps tried to go back in but they wouldn't go away so yea.. also that was the first week i had been moved from outside to middle linebacker but that doesn't really matter... but both of my calves locked up on a punt that i fell down on and i basically had to pull my feet up to make them stop lol.. rest of the year i drank a thing of pedialyte b4 the game and didn't have problems w/ that anymore.
with or without cramps it doesnt matter he wasnt to great he was just an alright football player
I just want to say that James Lanning has proven himself to be a good sport among all of this. He never boasted of his team or himself during the season like we see so many players do on this board.
I was shocked that he was SWD player of the year, not because he didnt have the most turnovers forced, but because he didnt brag on himself all year that I could see like so many others have.
Too bad many of you kids on this board arent like James... And james good luck to you in the future, and thanks for showing some pride, respect, and sportsmanship.
ill be honest james is def a good sport....i am def not a good sport cause i like talkin crap lol
Clayburne was 1st team All-State defensive linebacker his senior year, Wicks, his senior year, was SWD defensive player of the year, Region IV defensive co-player of the year and first team All-State on defense. I would think Jackson with his stats should be first team on state also. 3 excellent defensive personnel on the Blues team. Wicks also played after the ACL injury, at Tazewell his senior year, and still earned all these honors, which speak loudly about their skills and accomplishments.
Life has many choices---eternity has two
well wat helps to gettin all-state is if u makin there, u gotta go deep into playoffs to get recognition bc people have to see u play and thats wat the teams for clayburne and wicks did but jackson wont get that cause they didnt go far enough and if he does all i gotta say is WOW
Dude, you can't give anyone any credit at all can you?!?! Richlands' defense has been their bread and butter for the past 5 regional championships. They must be doing something right! I don't know who you are, I'm sure you're a good athlete, but give some props to the other guys when they deserve it... considering you haven't beat them since you've been playing varsity football.
i never said they werent good im sure the claybourne kid was good ive heard good things about him, but last year i think tyler barreras was the best backer
TNT, you and others aren't getting the point. The numbers show it. Richlands was clearly the best team yet had fewer players named to the all SWD team that Abingdon, Tazewell and Graham.
look at past years this is like the first time in a long time the district champ didnt get the most kids and graham always gets a lot of kids just because of the tradition they have everyone thinks if u go to graham then ur pretty good
