  1. I'm sure they will ride him till the end Blues, I'm just guessing when he starts getting popped like I think he will, if he will be able to play the entire game or not without a bit of a rest here and there, does he play on the defensive side as well or no?

Yes Ditto Sam Wright plays OLB on defense

  2. I have seen Cave 3 times this year. Sam Wright does not step off the field. Not only does he not look tired at any point he seems to gain strength as the game goes.

Against Northside Cave tried to play catch-up in the 4th while down by 3 scores by running him 8-9 times in row. He got about 50 yards on the last drive before they thew an INT with under a minute to go.

Sam and Devin have had similar seasons but they are very different backs.

Devin seems to drift down the line looking for a hole then explodes thru it.

Sam has the ability to get very skinny and squeeze thru holes that are barely there.

Devin has a brutal stiff arm and is deadly one on one or in open space.

Sam has a keen sense of when he is going down and seems to find a way of milking 4-5 yards with several defenders latched on.

If there was a way to combine the two you would have the most lethal RB in the state HANDS DOWN.

All in all I would say it's a toss up on which is better.

  3. For those that don't know, Cave Springs starting QB Reece Kingery was back in action last night.

This does give Cave atleast some threat of a passing game to go along with their obvious running attack. I don't think it will be enough to propel the Knights past Richlands but it will give them a little more hope.

  4. That is an interesting article, hadn't really followed the Islanders much this year didn't realize they were gonna be seeded that high. Your right tho, the real season is here and we will see who really has the nuts! Been waiting for a while glad its time.

    Did I hear Nuts?

Seriously congrats to Richlands on the perfect season and more importantly home field advantage. There are alot of equal teams on this side of the state and that home field is priceless.

  5. Sleepin nuts, since you have got to see most/all of the playoff teams in your opinion if you had to pick a favorite to win it all who would it be?

Ditto, I have no idea.LOL With 6 teams still undefeated it's very hard to know what it will take to beat one of them. I have a fairly good idea of a final four but after that all bets are off.

  6. Hey Sleepin nuts I was gust wondering witch school do you scout for?

Blues, For lack of a better term I would say that I am a free agent. I was a full time video guy for a team a few years ago but now I just help a few of my old coaching buddies when they need film of a team I want to see.

It's a cool gig. I try to go to a few locations I have never been to before. I love hanging out with the fans and I always try to see the best teams every year. Richlands has an amazing atmosphere, great fans and a really fun team to watch so I am hoping to get to see them again this year.

  7. If your @ the Cave Spring vs. Hidden Valley game, look me up. I'm the fat guy with the camera.

TJ, I started to say hello to you the week you were taking pictures of Coach Hammes's family under the scoreboard at Bogle but I didn't want to interrupt.

I can't go to the HV vs CS game as I have a previous commitment to be at another game.

I know you are at alot of different CS events so I am sure I will bump into you at some point.

  8. I thought Cave should have beaten Richlands last year, the two TD's called back killed them...but, they have lost a couple of key players since then...I hope that if Richlands and Cave meet again this year that I can go...would love to see that match up again.

I think Richlands vs Cave would be a very good match-up.

I have seen both teams several times this year and they are very similar.

Both offenses revolve around very good RBs. I would call it a tie between the two.

QB play is equal also. Richlands is better at Passing but Cave's QB can run better.

The biggest glaring difference to me is on defense.

Richlands is much better in pass coverage. Cave will struggle against a good passing team.

Also Cave does not have a kicking game. They won't even try extra points and kickoffs don't even go to the 20 so field position could be an issue.

All in all I would say that Richlands would win by 2 scores at Ernie Hicks.

Cave can keep it within a TD at Bogle.

  9. If Cave Spring gets a #1 seed, does that mean Cave Spring would play @ home for the playoffs? I got a picture in the Roanoke Times from the CS vs. Cburg game, the Times didn't even send a camera person, I guess they didn't believe Cave Spring had a chance.(I didn't really believe they did myself) Playoff time - Teams need to get ready for Tony Simmons.

    Cave Spring vs. Cburg-8329

Lets see if he can lead CS to a victory over HV. Hidden Valley has allways given CS troble. Can't wait for Friday night.

TJ, If Cave gets the #1 see they will host games as long as they are alive all the way until the state championship game.

They will host Richlands and the winner of that game will host the Region 3 champion.

  10. This Cave Spring-Hidden Valley game is very hard to predict.

Hidden Valley has been very predictable this year. The Titans have lost to teams they were supposed to lose to and have won the games they were supposed to win.

Cave on the other hand has looked like world beaters at times (CBurg and 1st half vs Salem) and has looked horrible at others (Northside and 2nd half vs Salem)

Cave is technically the "home team" but these teams share Bogle Field anyway so I'm not sure that is an advantage.

All in all this is a big rivalry game that wouldn't surprise me if it went either way.

What do you guys think of Gate City vs Clintwood? If Cave wins that game will be huge in deciding the seeds.

  11. Richlands gonna have a hard time keeping the top spot over Cave Spring since they beat Christiansburg last night. But then again the Playoffs are not suppost to be easy, so we will just have to go to Cave Spring and Win!

It's going to be very close between Richlands and Cave Spring if Cave beats Hidden Valley.

My calculations suggest that if Gate City beats Clintwood then Richlands could still be #1.

Just to be safe I would also root for Staunton River to beat Alleghany.

  12. Yea they will be someone at each game, plus a couple are going to watch James Monroe also, so someone must think Monroe will be in the finals. Good Luck Christiansburg!

James Monroe? Better bet would be to go see Lafayette vs York.

  13. But if Tazewell was to forfiet, would Richlands still get any points as far as playoffs go?, And also that would give Richlands 3 weeks counting this week to prepare for their first playoff game....

A forfeit still counts the same as a win when it comes to points in the playoff system. If I'm not mistaken it is recorded as a score of 2-0.

  14. This year's a bit different. One, Richlands's schedule is weaker than even last year, which is something I didn't even think would happen. Two, the teams in R1/R2 are MUCH improved over last year, even more than the teams in R3/R4 are "down". I have a good friend who coaches at James Monroe out of Fredericksburg, and that team's grooving unlike any D3 team I've ever seen.

Just a fair warning for the 2nd weekend in December...

And will be the sacrificial offering to whatever R1/R2 team makes it. Sorry, boys, not happening this year.

I'm not buying into James Monroe. Just look at who they have played.

This team has ducked competition by dropping the decent teams they played and lining up cream puff after cream puff.

I understand it has to happen in SW Va.......but not in Fredricksburg.

James Monroe also leads the nation in unsportsmanlike penalties, In fact the head coach has already been tossed from one game this year for multiple unsportsmanlike penalties. Last year James Monroe looked about the same as this year then got blown to hell by Poquoson 42-7 in the playoffs. I expect we will see the same when they meet York or Lafayette.

  15. What I have heard kicked around is Abingdon with CBurg, Blacksburg, Pulaski and Carroll (I might be forgetting another) in a district together.

Region 3 teams Lord Bot, William Byrd and Northside moving to back to Region 4 to be with Salem, Cave Spring and Hidden Valley.

  16. My two pesos....

Richlands will have to bring its 'A' game to make it out of Region IV. Martinsville has a legitimate shot at playing spoiler.

Make it past that one, and there's another huge challenge awaiting -- which is perfectly logical, given the level of play we're talking about here.

The Region III title game (which should pit Brookville against Northside) ought to be a humdinger. The winner of that one will definitely emerge battle-tested.

Trust me when I say that Martinsville is not a threat. 5 TD win easy.
