  1. I mentioned this little known fact several months ago in another forum on this site but I can repeat. Golf is my deal, I love it more than all other sports combined and know more about the game at all levels than anyone should. I am a golf nerd!

Clemson has added women's golf for the 2013-2014 season, which is a requirement to compete in the SEC and Big XII. They have already had a head coach in place for over a year and signed two of the top junior girls in the world late last year. With the facilities and success of the men's program (more PGA Tour players than any other school) they have, it's only a matter of time before they are competing on a national level. Rumor around some of the major golf message boards for two years has been Clemson paving the way to get into the SEC or Big XII and this is evidence of such a move.

Don't underestimate how key that simple little thing could be in paving the way for Clemson to depart.

  2. It is against PGA Tour policy to pay appearance fees. This would have had to have been worked out in some other way. It is well known that Tiger's bag sponsor for many years was Buick and he never missed any GM sponsored golf tournaments. Much like Anthony Kim, Luke Donald, Fred Couples, Morgan Pressel, Ernie Els, Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar are sponsored by RBC and they never miss either of the RBC sponsored tournaments, the RBC Canadian Open and the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head. They find ways around it so it's not considered an "appearance fee".

  3. Personally, I believe that this is an issue that is to be left to the states and not the Federal Government. In all honesty, I wonder sometimes, if any part of the government needs to be involved in the marriage business. The President said in his statement that it is an issue the states should decide, which is code language to appease the states rights groups. I do however expect him to further "evolve" on the issue if re-elected and ultimately support some type of move on behalf of the Federal Government to make it the law of the land. The presidents record would indicate that he thinks little to nothing of state rights, once again proving that his comment regarding "leaving it up to the states," is nothing more than a further political ploy.

From a Christian perspective and that of a Pastor, I cannot endorse "same sex" marriage. The words alone do not even go together, there is no such thing as "same sex" marriage. The term marriage identifies a union between a man and a woman, aka opposite sex. To imply that marriage (the union of a man and a woman) can be "same sex" is contradictory.

I'll not labor the biblical perspective on this issue, but will simply add that the scriptures teach that marriage is a faithful, lifelong covenant between a man and a woman. Therefore, if everything else is considered marriage then marriage is essentially regulated to nothingness!

If the government is to be involved I would personally support some legislation that would permit same-sex couples the benefits and privileges of couples under marital status, nonetheless I firmly oppose the institute of marriage as a convenant between same-sex couples.

Is Same Sex Marriage a Civil Rights issue?

I do no think it is, I believe it to be more of a social justice issue. I believe in natural law and that the institution of marriage is representative of the natural law of procreation.

A man and a woman may want to marry, they may have different characteristics, one may be white, the other black, one short, one tall, the two may be of different ethnicities and these items can be obstacles to marriage, but in the end, they are still man and woman......compatible by nature. I believe "same sex" marriage is contrary to the laws of nature and that it is incompatible with nature.

I also do not think that it appropriate to compare inherited and unchangeable racial traits with non genetic and changeable behavior. "Same sex" marriage is sterile by nature and therefore only appeals to the personal gratification of those involved, therefore it does not need to be protected or promoted by the state as a legal institution.

Theese are just some of my thoughts on the issue, I am not here to debate the issue, but rather add my 2 cents to bring a few things to consideration.

I am not here to debate or turn this into anything other than the question I pose. You seem to be much more knowledgeable about this than I am so I am asking honest questions. Feel free to PM if you are more comfortable going that route.

Why is this such an issue now?

I am no Biblical scholar but if God ordained marriage to be between one man and one woman, and you believe the Bible to be true, shouldn't adultery be treated with the same sense of disdain as homosexuality. If I covet another man's wife, is that not equally sin against the nature of marriage?

I don't see legislation being added to "protect the sanctity of marriage" from adultery, abuse or any other damaging behavior to marriage as it is with "gay marriage" legeslation.

  4. Ok I see where WVVA.com is reporting that all players from Tazewell received a 1 game suspension and two players were suspended for two games. Both teams will forefit the game.

Did Carroll recieve the same punishment?

According to a local newspaper report, Tazwell's punishment was handed down by the VHSL along with a $300 fine. The VHSL saw no need to punish Carroll any further since the school had already handed down a stiffer punishment than the VHSL recommend.

Carroll suspended it's entire team for 1 game (Friday against Abingdon) and 5 players were suspended for another game beyond that.

The VHSL recommend 1 Carroll player get a 2 game suspension and nothing further.

I would post the article but its locked online without a password.

  5. dont no were u get your info. but its not correct. i live in lexington we play all 3 schools you might have 5000 fans on a good njght.

I didn't "get information" from anywhere other than my memory. I was stationed at Ft. Jackson between June 1992 and December 1994. I could't imagine it's changed that much over the years. That area doesn't seem to have been hit by economic impact like smaller areas around here. I saw some great games, teams and players come through there in 2 years. The Gaffney team from 1992 and Greer team from 1994 were incredible. Division 1 talent all over the field. Peter Boulware, Vonnie Holiday and Bobby Ingram are three that stick out in my mind but I don't remember who they played for.

  6. Check out the salaries of HS Coaches in SC. Not sure if there are any in VA that make as much as some of these guys. I think these are from 2009 so you can imagine what it is Today.

I know of at least one coach that move here from Lousia County and he is probably in the $60,000+ area (he is not even listed in this chart). Also, a lot of these guys don't even teach classes!

All three schools that have a coaching salary over 100k are in Columbia. I was stationed there in the military for a few years. The three schools, Lexington, Irmo and Dutch Fork, are located around Lake Murray and are only a few miles away from each other. They have some big name alumni in just about every sport imaginable. Home football game attendance is like a mid-major college game. Easily 20k in attendance.

  7. I watch Golf Channel daily and play golf on average between 3 and 4 times per week so I am a self proclaimed addict. My lovely wife claims to be a golf "widow" and she is not particularly interested in anything golf related. With that said, she couldn't take her eyes off of the coverage this weekend. She has watched all of the celebratory media tours since with Morning Drive, Piers Morgan, David Letterman, and many others.

Given the reaction of my wife, I think Bubba could be a "crossover champion" meaning he has the ability to reach the casual or even non-golf fan. Maybe not on the scale of Tiger but at least Bubba is a better person to help grow the game around.

I also love the fact that Bubba is not cut out of the cookie cutter mold players of today seem to be. He is authentic in his life and his game and to me, that's refreshing.

  8. hokie07, The only evidence needed to show how well liked Bubba is on Tour is by how many fellow PGA Tour players and caddies met him on the 10th green to show their support of his victory. How many times have you seen that happen?

As for the Elkington issue, it was resolved within days of the incident and was all started when Elk said Bubba "would be selling cars in two years".

  9. I have followed Bubba in Charlotte a few times over the years but my best memory of him were from last year at Augusta on Wednesday. Coming off the green at 17, he walked past us to the 18th tee, stopped, got a ball from his caddie, Ted Scott, signed it and gave it to the 11 year old boy standing to my left. He then brought the boy onto the tee and allowed him to walk the entire 18th hole with him. Bubba is a super nice guy.

Edit to add photo of the above referenced memory.

  10. Wow, way to hit these things in a timely manner. Got any Boss Tweed jokes you wanna lay on me?

I kid. I'm actually living back in SWVA, thanks. Have been for a couple of months now.

Let's just say, having played in that program in the last decade, I know what the culture was and has been. Having friends close to the program and keeping as close of tabs as I've been able, I'm fairly confident when I can report that the culture isn't changing a Hell of a lot.

Graham's biggest problems in 2001 were:

    (1) Failure to develop live arms.

    (2) Failure to practice hitting off live arms.

    (3) Poor fielding.

Graham's biggest problems in 2011 were:

    (1) Failure to develop live arms.

    (2) Failure to practice hitting off live arms.

    (3) Poor fielding.

Is it such a gigantic leap of faith to draw the conclusion I did?

Since you don't seem particularly familiar with baseball on the VA side, let me give the take of someone on the VA side. Bluefield's Little League program, up through 6th grade, has always been above-average. I mean, Bluefield's sent teams to state a few times (beating Tazewell, Richlands, Abingdon, Lebanon, etc.), and has done respectably in most other years. Where the breakdown occurs is in 7th-8th grades (I don't know where you get the idea that there are middle school teams...but I'm 99% sure there are few, if any, in SWVA). That's when kids start really going after fall-ball, and Graham's always been woefully deficient there. Graham's a football school: ALL the kids are pushed toward football, when many would be better served to do fall-ball. Where kids from Richlands and Tazewell are doing baseball, Graham's kids get 0 baseball practice. Graham's virtually fielding a varsity team with JV-level experience and middle-school level practice. THAT is the major rub.

If the coaches really wanted to make an impact, they'd be pushing the kids a lot harder toward fall-ball programs. If there's not one, there should be one created. You get 9-12 kids doing that, and I guarantee you it would be like night-and-day in 2 years. Not saying Graham would make a run at state, but Graham wouldn't be the perennial barrel-bottom team they've been since '91.

I await your next response, sometime in April. ;)

Galax, Grayson, Fort Chiswell and Bland all have very good middle school baseball programs.

  11. Parry McClure Is 22-5 .. played some good teams but have also lost to some teams thats not so good!!

Wow! Tough crowd. PM lost to Rockbridge twice, Glenvar, James River and Galax. Rockbridge is 24-2 and won Region 3 D3. Glenvar is still alive in D2 after Region C runner-up. James River is a border rivalry that you can throw records aside when PM and JR meet in any sport. Galax is defending Group A D1 champions and 24-2.

  12. For someone that thinks he knows everything and is supposed to be an official. You don't exactly know what you are talking about. Lets start with the uniforms, Galax was the one that called Castlewood and ask about letting them wear their white uniforms. Coach Scammell agreed and that is what was done, if you had gotten there early enough you would have seen the Galax players wearing their white jersey's as they were showing up for the game. To let every one know what you were doing prior to the game, you talked to the administration from Castlewood and then you went and talked to the officials, which only one of them knew who you were. Now for the IG penalty, if the receiver had not been tackled he would had been there to make the catch. That's the reason that there was no one there to catch the ball. As a referee you should know the rule, the game you are playing is not included in the penalty for fighting. The kid was ejected for throwing a punch. As far as running up the score it is what it is, no one from Castlewood said anything about it to any one from Galax. Congtauation to Galax and I wish them the best.

Maybe you should know what you are talking about before you state your opinion. The fact is that Galax ask Castlewood about wearing their white jersey's for this game, Coach Scammell agreed and that is the reason that Castlewood wore blue. If you had gotten there early enough you would have seen the Galax players arriving wearing their white jersey's. And I don't know why no longer officiate, but you have no clue about the rules, the game you get ejected in is not included in the penalty for being ejected. If the coaching staff had pulled their starters when they had a comfortable lead this would not have happened to a very good ball player. As for the IG penalty if you had been paying attention you have seen that the running back that was supposed to be out on the pass pattern was tackled by the DE, that is why no one was there to catch the pass but that was not called. Congratualtion to Galax I wish them the best, but i will be pulling for Honaker next week.

I no longer officiate because I have small children. I have not officiated since leaving the military in Texas and I never said I was ever a VHSL official. As for getting to the game early enough to talk to the administration from Castlewood and the referee's, why would I do that? I don't know anyone from Castlewood nor do I know any of those officials. I was there early enough to speak to Galax administration who told me the situation with Galax wearing road whites. I also witnessed a few Galax kids getting the road white's off their mothers backs to change into. As for the ejection rule, it is dependent upon video and coach interviews also but, as I stated earlier, the way I understand it. I have never had that issue in a game and it is not anything a referee would need to worry about. All we need to know is they are ejected from the game being played. VHSL administration should let referees know for future games who is ineligible.

  13. Old Tully wont back down from nothing and I respect the hell out of the guy but he ran into a Coach ( That I know pesonally) that would lock horns with all the 4 horseman lol.

This guy came out of a Pro system where they play by the old Spurrier rule " It's my job to score,it's your job to stop me, Dont get mad if I do my job better" I dont like seeing the score ran up on kids, back in my day I was on teams that got beat 70-0 I didnt like like it and I didnt forget it but thats life move on Ole Davy boy will return the favor some day..I grew up around the Galax program, back in the day (early 70's) they had a weight room that Va Tech would have liked to have had..There use to be a strong Football tradition there and the coach they have now is rekindling the fire.

As Vols said, if they made them switch Jersys I'd imagine that would fire them up..

Kick'n a big dog is like eat'n peppers...Careful what you eat it may burn your ass.

He played for Jimmie Johnson in Miami for the Dolphins. Jimmie said that exact phrase several times while at the U.

  14. Not necessarily white, but light colored jerseys. Although its always been suggested, and coaches generally have talked in the past to make sure jersey issues didn't happen before a game they adjusted the rule last year to read as this:

Rule 1 Section 5 Article 1 Part B Section 5: Through 2011, players of the opposing team shall wear jerseys of contrasting colors. Players of the home team shall wear dark jerseys, and players of the visiting team shall wear light-colored jerseys. The visiting team is responsible for avoidance of similarity of colors, but if there is doubt, the referee may require players of the home team to change jerseys.

Starting next year, due to some new jersey rules that have been known by coaches for what seems like a decade now, the visiting teams must wear white (they are removing the "light" terminology to take away gray, gold, and such other light colors. By next year, home teams will not be allowed to have white on their uniforms except for numbers and or trim less than 1 inch in width.

    Thank you!

  15. I don't care if Castlewood showed up wearing all Maroon with propellers on their helmets, running up the score is immature and risks your own players health. For all the recent years Galax was garbage and got the score ran up on them, you would think they would know better.

That is my point. I am sick of reading about this group running up the score from people who read a box score and never see a game. The simple fact is, Galax's forth string TB has over 650 yards and 7 TD's, third stringer has almost 900 yards and 8 TD's. The backup QB's (both of them) have played extensive minutes. People also need to realize, they only have 23 players on varsity. They don't have enough to make wholesale substitutions. If you read newspaper interviews, coach Dixon has always said he wishes he had more kids to help keep scores down.

This group of seniors deserve credit. They are 21-4 in football and have only lost 2 games in basketball in 2 seasons including a state championship last season. This group of senior golfers won 3 state titles in 4 years. The senior volleyball girls have gone to the state tournament each of the past 2 seasons. The cross country team placed in state for the 19th time in 19 years. Give them credit, no matter what you think of the coaches, me or anyone else who supports this community.

  16. I think for a guy who is suppose to be an official with an unbias opinion you sure made a crappy statement about a bunch of high school kids.

"As for leaving starters in, Castlewoods coach pulled a stunt by showing up with all blue uniforms and the referees forced Galax to go into the locker room to change from all maroon home unis to all white so they deserved the beatdown they got."

That's my opinion and you obviously have your's. IMO, the coaching staff at Castlewood chose to come two and a half hours knowing they had their home uniforms. It was a childish move meant to get under the skin of the Galax players and coaches. The fact that I officiated at one point in my life has no bias on my opinion of another person or group of people.

  17. I was working the concession stand and happened to be watching the TV when this play happened. Our camera guy had the camera zoomed in on this play, so I got a really good view of it. It was definitely a horse collar. He didn't have the shoulder, he grabbed inside the of the collar of his shoulder pads. It was a textbook horse collar, IMO. I was baffled that there wasn't a flag on the play.

If the player is inside the pad, it's a horsecollar. I just wish the Federation would allow the referees to make judgement calls in that situation instead of trying to clearly define a horsecollar. Most people know what a horsecollar is when they see it but it's not easy to define.

  18. Was it late in the game when one of their players go ejected and will have to miss the next two weeks?

Also, what was the deal with the IG call? I assume he just heaved it out of bounds with no one around?

I am an official and thought the grounding call was justified. Not trying to argue the point but I would have called it. He had all day to throw as Galax fell back in coverage with it being 3rd and about 14 from the Castlewood 7 yard line. The QB had nowhere to go with the ball and was still inside the tackle box and just threw the ball to about the 10 yard line from the back of the endzone to the flat with nobody within 25 yards of the area.

Stephen Peoples was the player ejected with about 6 minutes left in the game. He has loads of talent, maybe even division 1 talent but can't control his anger. He way I understand the rule, the ejection is for 2 games but that includes the current game you are being ejected from.

As for leaving starters in, Castlewoods coach pulled a stunt by showing up with all blue uniforms and the referees forced Galax to go into the locker room to change from all maroon home unis to all white so they deserved the beatdown they got.

  19. It wasn't the shoulder. Nor the pad. He had both hands around the jersey at the back. And pretty much just fell to the ground, causing McGlothlan to fly backwards.

Now see, to me that should be a horsecollar and would be in college or pro if he was pulled down backward by the jersey. Unfortunately, the way the high school rule is written, the hand must be in the pad, not just the jersey.

  20. Blatant horsecollar. Is than not a penalty in high school??

National Federation rules are strange at best for this rule. Very different than the college or pro rule. Basically in a nutshell, the offensive player has to fall backward, the hand must be all the way inside the pad, the act of the hand in the pad and the fall backward have to be the act that brings the ball carrier to the ground and if another defensive player assists on the tackle in any way, it negates the horsecollar. This is the most misunderstood rule you will ever see on a Friday night. Followed closely by uncatchable/pass interference. There is no uncatchable rule in high school.

I hate that rule the way it is written for high school football.

First time ive ever seen a ref actually argue back and forth with the fans lol he claimed it was the sholder and not a horsecollar it was funny listening to him argue with the fans when he did not throw the flag. One thing i did get disgusted with the radio guy on the sidelines i think his name is LT he starts giving the ref down the road too LT leave the harassing the refs to the fans and do your job my man.

If he indeed did have the shoulder, it is not a horsecollar by the definition of the National Federation of State High School Associations. I hate the way it is written for high school.

  21. the Auburn/GC game was bs. They were spraying stuff on their shoes and hands to keep them from sliding in plain sight (ILLEGAL) and our players were slipping and falling everywhere because they hadn't properly cleaned the gym, not saying we would have won if this would have been played anywhere else but we would have stood a much greater chance at winning. I'm pretty sure they are getting reported on a national level for this because I know of a few girls that got hurt last night.

Auburn has been doing this for years in basketball. As I understand it, the HVAC was retrofitted to that building by using a different system for heat and air but using the same piping. When turned on in the gym at the same time, it condenses and ends up on the gym floor. Huge advantage when you are prepared for it.

This is also why they struggle to fill basketball schedules.

  22. Blatant horsecollar. Is than not a penalty in high school??
