  1. Galax would play the winner of the Burton -Honaker game...that's what the VHSL Brackets show

That's what I was looking at earlier. It's that forgotten part of the state thing again. I used to work for a firm in Roanoke about 10-12 years ago and a co-worker would argue with me that Oak Hill Academy was located in the mountains of Tennessee and the highest point in Virginia was Peaks of Otter where he grew up.

    Sorry, rant over.

  2. Speaking of this game and my belief that people on the "other side of the state" think the state stops at Radford, the Roanoke Times playoff preview for tonight's games said the winner of this game will play the winner of George Wythe/Radford next Friday night. I was under the impression that the winner of this game would face the Burton/Honaker winner and the GW/Radford winner would face the Clintwood/Chilhowie winner.

    Anyone have any insight?

  3. Field is in a sunken bowl and is behind the high school. Maybe sixcat can tell you more...I believe he lives in Galax according to his posts.

Let me know how #45 does for Galax. He is definetly fun to watch. Believe he lines up in a few different places TE/DE/LB/FB. I live in Florida and may listen to the radio depending on whether I go to some local playoff games in Pensacola, FL.

I do live in Galax, a block away from the high school. He is a beast.

  4. Looks like I'm headed to Galax to take pics for Scammell's bunch...never been there? Any of you guys know about the field and lights? Nice place? Is it located at the High School or some place else?

Sorry, been away for a few days. The field is located at the high school and is basically the highest point in town with the exception of the hospital. The lights leave a lot to be desired. They have probably not been replaced since the old Driver's Ed range (behind the end zone, used for parking now) was back-filled to create the football field/track in the 70's. The Driver's Ed range used to extend to about where the 25 yard line is now. As for the city itself, it is a very friendly area.

If you need a local recommendation on eats, try Squealer's located on US-58 at the bottom of the hill below Wal-Mart. Best food in town.

  5. I thought it was the best 30 for 30 yet. Can you believe the idiot that poisoned the Oak Trees at Auburn. He named one kid Crimson Tide, another Bear Bryant and wanted to name his daughter Ally Bama and his wife said hell no!

Like sports, love life. That's taking it WAY too seriously.

  6. agreed sixcat ...not suggesting any residence illiegalities just engaging in some "what ifs" also. I think we both agree there are some really good football players in this area at the moment and Shalabi may be the best all around player.

I agree. He wont get any publicity given the positions he plays and he is not a flashy player but I guarantee opposing coaches want to know where he is on the field all the time.

  7. yes but on a side note Jordan Vaughn lives in Grayson Co. and Fisher went to elementary in Grayson up to 5th or 6th grade. I believe Lundy currently resides in Grayson County.

Jacob Fisher lives a few houses down the street from me and walks to school every day. I live a block from the high school. I find it hard to believe but don't know for certain about where Fisher went to school in 5th or 6th grade but he transferred into Galax from a school near Fayetteville, NC. I don't know where Jordan lives but his older brother also played sports at Galax in the mid to late 90's and is a current city police officer. Conner Lundy lives in West Galax and attended Galax schools through 8th grade. West Galax falls inside the city limits but is in the Grayson County voting district and the opposite side of Galax from Carroll, where he attends.

With all of this said, it is all a mute point since all the kids mentioned are legal to play sports at their respective schools. Galax is an independent city and falls on the border between Grayson and Carroll Counties. The only point I was trying to make was Galax could have had some more great athletes on an already loaded team.

  8. Sixcat: What is the size on 45 Frankie Shalabi? I could only find a roster with a weight of 6'1" 205 for him. He sure seems more like 230 to me or plays like he is bigger than 205. Is there an accurate roster for Galax somewhere online?

    http://roanoke.com/timesland/roster.aspx?tid=60&school=125352&syid=7

This one is not very accurate I don't believe but the only one I found. I am 6' tall and he is an inch, maybe 2 taller than me. As for weight, I would guess 205-210 would be very accurate.

Edit to add...Frankie also placed very highly (4th I believe) in the state wrestling tournament last winter in his first year ever wrestling.

  9. If you get to watch them in person...#45 is fun to watch.

I said the same thing 6 weeks ago on another thread on this site. He may be the best FOOTBALL PLAYER in the MED. His name is Frankie Shalabi and he is a beast.

On a side note, how stacked COULD this Galax team be. Salem QB Matt Hill, Grayson RB Xavier Rodriguez and Carroll QB Conner Lundy were all Galax students just a couple of years ago.

  10. I did the associates degree program through the Virginia Community College System and then went into a four year program. It was seamless and greatly reduced costs as VCCS is much cheaper than any four year institution. I was able to work a full time schedule while completing my education.

It was not easy but nothing worthwhile is.

Also, don't hesitate to check out the community colleges in the Triangle area. There will be a lot more opportunity their to work with a very supportive company while going to school.

  11. missed Glenvar.....and I meant now

The total wins of both teams opponents are fairly even. MED competition is a wash as they have to play those teams. Radford and Clintwood are both 7-2, Chilhowie and Glenvar are both 5-4, Craig and East Mont are both 3-6, Alleghany (2-9) and Carroll (2-7) are even. The only real difference in schedule is Grayson beat Rural Retreat who is 8-1 and Galax beat Floyd who is 2-7.

  12. Grayson has a few key kids out so I think that Galax comes out on top......One interesting thing is if i am not mistaken Galax has only faceed 1 team with a winning record so far this season

Glenvar is 5-4 and Radford is 7-2. Fort Chiswell was 3-2 at the time of the game.
