Cold-shooting Twin Valley sweeps past Deacons in hoops twinbill

By ANTHONY STEVENS

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

ST. PAUL, Va. — Behind the stellar play of Josh Smith, Twin Valley overcame some atrocious shooting to grab a 55-30 road win over St. Paul on Tuesday. The Panthers didn’t start out cold, they were frigid. They made only one of their first 16 shots.

“It’s a win,†said Smith. “But we don’t feel good about this win tonight. We should have shot a lot better than we did. If we don’t start making those shots down the line it will come back to bite us.â€

A double-double isn’t extremely rare in high school basketball. But Smith accomplished the feat in the first half. He then continued to fill the stat sheet in the second half and totaled 15 points and cleared the glass with 23 rebounds in the contest.

“The practices we have just teach us to keep pounding and going, going, going,†Smith said. “We try to play harder at the end, that’s what we’ve been taught to do.â€

The game was tied a couple of times in the second quarter but the Panthers began to pull away, taking a 24-11 lead at the half. St. Paul didn’t have a field goal in the second quarter.

“This is the ugliest game we’ve played all year,†Twin Valley coach Brian Moore said. “We were able to rebound and keep ourselves in it. When you don’t shoot the ball well you have to rebound and play defense.â€

Hunter Simpson finished with 16 points and nine rebounds. After missing a couple of games Lucas Shortridge was back and contributed 12 points.

“We rely on Simpson every night,†said Moore. “He does a lot of things that don’t show up on the stat sheet. He’s a good leader.â€

Twin Valley will travel to Bristol to play in the prestigious Arby’s Classic at Viking Hall after Christmas.

“I’m looking forward to see what we’re really made of,†said Smith. “We might get beat, but we want to go down and play against the tough competition. It will help us out a lot in the long run.â€

The Lady Panthers struggled with their shooting in the first quarter leading by only one point.

“If we’re not hitting our shots as small as we are, we’re going to struggle,†Twin Valley coach Rick Goodman said. “We had open shots early, they just wouldn’t go in.â€

Twin Valley began to find the range midway through the second quarter and took a 22-14 halftime lead. The Lady Panthers then took control of the game in the third quarter.

Katie Lester had a game-high 20 points to lead Twin Valley (4-3). Sarah Mullins had a good performance with 12 points.

“Katie is about all we had in the first half, getting rebounds and putting it in,†said Goodman. “Sarah hit some shots and gave us some breathing room.â€
