GmanFan 21 Report Share Posted February 8, 2009 According to the article, only five wrestlers failed to qualify for the regional tournament. Just wondering, but what is the reason for taking the top six out of each weight class with only seven teams in the district? That doesn't apply to any other sports, correct? Not being critical; however, it does seem odd. Makes the regular season seem to be not very important. Maybe someone has the reasoning for this format. Either way, good luck to all of the district wrestlers next week at Magna Vista.
VHSLhelper 571 Author Report Share Posted February 8, 2009 Piedmont has 5 teams, 6 in the River Ridge & 7 in the SWD = 18 teams. R IV decided to use a 16 man bracket, so 2 have to be left out. So SWD sends just 6 & RRD sends just 5.
VHSLhelper 571 Author Report Share Posted February 8, 2009 other sports? Funny. No sport that I can think of sends everyone to Regionals.

Slap the Mat 32 Report Share Posted February 8, 2009 Wrestling can not be compared to other sports in the criteria used in how the wrestlers qualify for the regional tournament. Wrestling is considered a team sport, but in the post season tournaments it becomes more of an individual sport. Thus the reason for the SWD qualifying 6, the RR 5, and the P 5. This fills the 16 man bracket with no 1st round byes as in the previous tournament format of the SWD, Piedmont, & Highlands districts. Football, basketball, and other true team sports use tournament type formats that don't allow "everyone" to go to the regionals only taking the top two from the district or top four from the region to advance for play offs. The format used with wrestling allows for wrestlers to qualify based on their own abilities , not the strength of their team.
