MavsRock 21 Report Share Posted May 9, 2009 The only thing that might be more worrysome than going into last year's season for us Mountaineer fans is going into this one. The wheels didn't exactly come off the wagon last year, but all was not well on the ship. Defensively we should be in pretty good shade. Other than McCoy from Pitt and Nix from UNC embarrasing them a little bit, the D didn't do real bad after the ECU meltdown, and we did have 7 new starters. The return of Fiesta Bowl co-player of the game Reed Williams won't hurt matters either. And it's a good thing the D was pretty good bacause the offense last year, well,......, yeah. The major concern there was, they had a veteran QB and O-line, and still heavily struggled. They bailed out the defense against UNC, but most of the time, it was working the other way around last year. I think even if they hadn't changed coaches and systems the losses of Owen Shmidt and Steve Slaton would've been felt and were as least in part to blame for the lack of production. The good news for Jarret Brown is the return of some real good WR's. The ? is the running game, the line has to get some blocking for Devine and the other RBs or we'll definetly struggle again. The big question is this: Was 2008 the first step on the road back to mediocrety, or a year with growing pains and a stepping stone back to championship contension. My hope is the latter is true. What I do feel for certain is that this is a crucial year for the Bill Stewart era, and whether it'll be remembered as a stroke a genisand good timing, or a bad marriage on the rebound. Guest JJBrickface Report Share Posted May 9, 2009 Our offensive line was heavily overrated last year, these guys fit into the zone blocking scheme for Rich Rod's offense. Last year they were taught a more all around blocking game. Look at some of WVU's offensive linemen the past 4 years...Dan Mozes, Greg Isdaner, Ryan Stanchek, al of them enjoyed college accolades but all struggled to catch on an NFL team. Hopefully this years line will be tougher and better on short yardage.
